The "Garvey Movement" of teaching Black people to stand tall and know "I AM" without apology, is an honorable legacy. I would contend that this self awareness and depth of being; this knowledge of self comes from something much, much deeper than people marching with the intention of possibly going back to Africa. The Pan-Africa movement was much bigger than Garvey. It was also much smaller than the real victory of being authentic to one's self without shame or hesitation.
@Ironshirt13 Actually we are learning about Garvey in school right now. We had to do research on Garvey and that is how I stumbled upon this video. I am not going to say he was perfect. He wasn't even close. Yet unlike most of us, he tried to change the world for the better (according to his views).
I still think based on this assessment that W.E.B. Dubois had the more correct understanding of the problems our country is hampered and consumed by when it comes to race. The answer is not to flee and make sepparate empires of race. A white here, and a black one in Africa and so on, but to get rid of these false ideas of race existing anywhere but in our obsessed imaginations and to destroy truely the institutional and social reinforcement of racism forever.
@JTheTeach I don't know if your white black asian or whatever. Im African or black and have a understanding of the history the past 2000yrs to the present of black people and the western white man. Its been one of a master slave relationship. Basically African black people are suppose to have the self determination and consciouness of whites not matter what. We're not suppose to have our own.
@The Beach With our our own self determination and consciousness we produce Egypt Nubia Ethiopia Great Zimbabwe Zulu Mali Songhai Ghana Ashanti and etc through the time of our history on the continent of Africa which goes back over a million yrs as the original people. The basics for math science music agriculture and etc comes from the black mind.
@JTheTeach In your Utophian mind you want blacks to stay with whites or a group of people who are the main reason for black people not wanting to have self determination and our own consciouness for the purpose of whites using blacks for their own survival and preservation. I don't think so! I don't care about so-called racism but I do care about the survival of black people which has been suffering more and more each yrs since having contact with whites and western asian arabs.
@arronnov I think you are missing my point. I don't want any person subjugated to the whims of another, that would be truely horrible. As well I have somewhat of a grasp upon the history and present reality of european/non-european relationships of exploitation. I am well aware that much of what is considered progress today comes from a eurocentric bias. What I am supporting is the non-recognition of race and the reintroduction of the recognition of unique cultures. You should care.
@JTheTeach Well that is not going to happen! Western white civilization is anti anybody else culture on the grand scheme of things. Now I realize other cultures do the samething but you can see and have seen through history more tolorance from other people. Western civilization the past 600yrs to the present has labelled pretty much every other culture and people its come in contact across the globe as primitive savage pagan uncivilized non beautiful and etc.
@JTheTeach While doing these things western civilization claims things from other people as their own in their writings of history. If you change the universities schools and etc of western civilization your labelled as psuedo or changing history aka whites version of their history. Perfect example of this is with black people. We've been written out of history by western civilization. The Egyptian are credited with being something other than black African people.
@JTheTeach When history culture and etc on black African people it has been control by whites in their institution of higher learning so we know by history the angle whites have portray blacks as in history. The same thing was done to the Natives of the Americas and all over the planet.
@JTheTeach With the that being said as black man proud of being African while learning and regaining the essence and knowledge of my ancestor on daily basis as best I can. Why would blacks or more important trust the majority of whites and the intention towards black people when it comes to our own self determination and knowledge of our ownselves. We have history the past 2000yrs that shows that western civilization is anti African.
@JTheTeach The majority of time whites are only interest in black people and our history culture ways and etc when its in their interest for their survival or subjectgation of black people. Basically a master and slave or control relationship! If not we will just kill you when we don't need you no more. All one has to do is study European history and see the treatment toward the whites on their ownselves the past 1500yrs.
@JTheTeach You must keep in mind the concept of race is western white thing! I don't mind or care if other groups of humans celebrity their own uniqueness. That's what where suppose to do. When you try to force every body to act the same in one borg like culture which is western civilization yesterday and today. We get death destruction and chaos on the the people that western civilization has and what's to force their the way on to gain power and live the way they want too!
@The Teach You support the non-recognition of race but that hasn't been a part of the blueprint in western civilization past or present. I live in central america while in the military and got the chance to travel to the different countries in central and south America. The same persecution and oppression that the America has and continues to black people is alive and well in central and south America.
@JTheTeach This is part of a system of white supremacy to stop and keep black people from rising up and having our own identify knowledge of self and self determination. You get whites saying I don't do anything to black people which very may be true but the benefit from this system and doing nothing about. I don't aspect them too either but when blacks what our own identiy self determination and knowledge many whites fights this talking about some universal oneness or togetherness bullshit.
@The Beach Black people suffer from a psychological and mind position of white consciousness instead of one a black one. Many other people suffer the same thing. Asians suffer it so bad that the bleach their skin to look white or in record numbers daily get cosmetic surgery to change their looks to a western white look. That's shows condition that people have suffered since being in contact fully the past 600yrs. We want to be white or have and maintain European consciousness.
@The Tech I look into the cultures of the natives of the Americas as well as Africa Asia and other parts of world that the western white man travelled to calling himself discovering the new world that was already there. The indians that are still alive in the Americas suffers from things that before contact with whites that the they didn't have or suffered very little. Obesity Alcoholism family issue and etc are things common place now.
@JTheTeach Africans Indians and Asians have subjectgated to a western white mindset of materlism like no time before in these cultures. Where led to believe having the basic things for survival wasn't and isn't good enough. We must consume because thats progress and do things in a western way to thrive. If thats the case how did my ancestors survive without the help or interferance of whites for over 10000yrs without their consciouness or mindset..
@The Teach Africans Indians and many others suffer from disease that we never had before. We eat poison altered unnatural food and water that western civilization tells us is technology and progress. All one has to do is look at America with a open mind and open thought. The so-called crown jewel of western civilization and child of Europe is in total chaos death and destruction who spreads its version of Utopia to the world like a plaque by force and war.
This is so sad it makes me want to cry. The world is so god damn cruel, they kicked him when he was dying. I feel like his struggle mirrors the struggle of a lot of people of all races around the world today. Keep cool.
Freedom is not something that land or another human being can give you. Freedom is within! We loved what Garvey did, but it's what he stood for that we love the most! He loved his people, he knew how great we were and still are despite the efforts by whites and others to dethrone and wipe us off the face of the planet. His idea was to get us to realize that once again!
okay, they like totally skipped a shit load of years. But I guess now that I look at it, he did have good intensions. But only if his boys wasn't so money hungry and evil. Things maybe woulda worked out better. However there is alot of things that is buried in history. And im pretty sure The Princess Of Ghana has forgiven him and everything was revealed to them both in heaven. Its just a shame how things happen.
They try to make his story sound so tragic and unrealized, but we are still here. And because of Marcus Garvey's missteps, triumphs, mistakes, and accomplishments, we are stronger and wiser for it.
The little pickney, in Kingston, throwing stones & laughing at him. All tht ws missing were the thorns.Judas ws present; and he died in the Capital of the Empire. How Padmore, the teacher of Nukramah, the West Indian, could deliver the final blow is tragic as it is symbolic. 'Dem never Love poor Marcus...' (as Might Diamnonds say) but rest, my dear beloeved bretheren.
O.G.: Commonly misunderstood as a term which stands for "Original Gangster," this versatile phrase (and it IS a phrase) actually means "Original Garvey," referring, of course, to Marcus Garvey- both the national hero of Jamaica and the founder of Pan-African activism later dubbed "Garveyism." The term "O.G." is used to describe a situation, object, or person who is slick, fortunate, above par, or of course, original. In essence, having resemblance or similarities to Garvey himself.
marcus had a bunch of bitches on his team dat rebelled against him over a white supremacist man i see the same shit here.. dats one thing negaz do iz ruk their tail when they are oppressed by their masters..dats why other nation luk at african american negros,blacks.color. all these labels just to identify a nigga. dont get i wrong im original but damn..negaz like FLIES! AND I MEAN!! FLIES! FULL OF SHIT.... we always selling out.. but get mad when other nations called u a nega.. islam man..
It's sad that the man who led the largest Black movement in America isn't even taught to Black children in school. I had never heard of him until I became a student of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad and Minister Farrakhan. They taught me of him and then I studied him myself.
The Honorable Marcus Garvey will live forever as long Allah keeps my seeds on this earth. I will by His grace always teach my children and their children in the future about The Honorable Marcus Garvey.
Thats why bro, we were taught about those who told to sing, dance, integrate and do all what no other race would do. And look at the results!! I just learned about this man in my late 20's. The worse part is that Black institutions dont teach about him, and have us learning about MLK, NAACP and all the groups that have keep us at the bottom. The still use the same plan with Jackson, Sharpton and Black preachers today and makes you wonder what Obama is there for. I love this guy and AFRICA UNITE!
Basically any minority uprising is a treat to white capitalism. MG was Black capitalism, as Tulsa Oklahoma in the 20's as well. MG was no different than any black born outside America. That was his flaw. The cultures are different. Haitians and Jamaicans liberated themselves by blood. Niggas were liberated by a paper.
@madmax - MG's mistake was enstilling Black pride and self determination to an oppressed people. White America hated any Black person that dared to free themselves of the mental chains of slavery. That's obvious b/c at anytime Blacks tried to seek human, civil or equal rights it was met with Great White resistance. & That was MG's only mistake.
OK, for the last time: The people who scuppered him can't have been loyal by definition, can they? Alot of others he trusted couldn't do the jobs assigned them. At the end, it was HIS judgement that was at fault. What are you saying? That if any organization, gov. etc. wants to stop anyone all they have to do is put a few spies in their set-up and that guarantees it will fall? So black people ultimately are at the mercy of "Whitey"? We will be if we don't take accountability. One love.
Damn MM u nailed it! If Whites wants to stop blacks they can. I invite u 2 research the study of Blacks who ever tried 2 make a difference i.e. Tulsa Riot Acts, Rosewood, NEthing after the reconstruction era specifically with freed slaves n Louisiana had the original black wall st, civil rights movement (how many blacks died for the cause), MX, MLK, ME, Nat turner, all of our black leaders were killed b/c they wanted change. I pray daily for Obamas safety. whites demise is a black nation uprooted
Do you fear death? So what if they die for a cause? The reason the white man was able to rape so many generations was because they told us that their white Jesus died for our sins and as such we ought to obey them, for they were given the mandate to save us from damnation through their white Jesus ("who was killed because he wanted change"). See Manifest Destiny for example!
@KA wtf r u talking about?! what do u mean so what they died for the cause - did u actually read my entire comment? obviously not. the civil rts pioneers died for the cause it does matter. the white man didnt only use religion to keep us oppressed he used violence, manipulation, division, etc etc. I agree w/ ur comment but read 1st b4 ur so quick to comment. what the hell does fearing death have to do w/ my comment? do me a favor dont respond 2 my comments just bypass it & read the others!
Ok. Calm down. Point Taken! But all I'm trying to say is the whites can stop us only if we let them, but not if they kill us.... They may kill one, but ten more will rise to the defense as highlighted in djkaneck1's comment about Haitians and Jamaicans!!!!! I made the comment in light of you fearing Obamas safety!
He never made a mistake, but trust his own! He realised this himself, while it may come across a bit alarming... it simply means that he was preaching to a people who were not bold enough to believe the lessons he was trying to teach them. They feared death and preferred to be subjugated by the white than stand to fight against oppression. The fact that we are having this dialogue now means that he has accomplished a lot! The contributions of our ancestors never die as long as we're still alive!
Did you know that the same year that he predicted that he would come back again and be a " terror to the enemies of black liberty ..." was the year MALCOLM X was born?!
He made mistakes, but Garvey was a great man and the original. Everything positive with "black" before it that came up afterwards has Garvey somewhere at its root. He was the fountainhead.
what mistakes did he make? he enstilled black pride and self determination at the end of 400 yrs of slavery to an oppressed people. he is he greatest black leader there ever was and that will ever be. if he made a mistake it was trust. he trusted people. people that was hired by the US govt 2 ensure that MG failed & everything he touched failed. the US's plan is & always will be to keep Blacks oppressed. B/c the day Blacks "wake UP" they will be met by White resistance & history teaches us that!
You answered your own question, didn't you? He trusted the wrong people, and gave important positions to people who weren't qualified to fill them. Great man, nonetheless.
mayb u just don't get it or i'm not being clear. if u pick a group of people that have proved their loyalty to u & 2 ur cause then those people have gained ur trust. its just like Malcolm X he trusted Elijah M. He believed this man was great. but EM was screwing young girls. MG unbeknowst 2 him trusted people who worked for the govt. i'm still not seeing what mistakes he made. had he known they were traitors he would not have trusted them obviously
But it wasn't just one person or two. His error was to trust too deeply people he liked, and to trust them with thousands of dollars. In financial affairs he needed an honest competent person to advise him. I learn a lot from Garvey, not only his virtues but perhaps especially from his vices. Too often the people he considered loyal proved themselves untrustworthy or incompetent. Clearly this showed less than impeccable judgement. That wasn't the only mistake he made, but it was enough.
madmax do u know what a traitor, a snitch & an informant is? these people are persons designed to befriend u & to gain your loyalty. this clips showed how many people the govt actually had as informants. just like Malcolm X the guys who killed him were from the NOI. they too were informants. I guess the people u have in your corner are angels hand picked by GOD only. I guess u never made a wrong or bad choice. MG mistake was not in who he trusted b/c they gained his trust as they were PAID to do
It still has not been completely told how j.Edgar Hoover had his boot on the throat of every black attempt to organize for the entire first half of this century.
it took the wealth and evil cunning of the whites in power to stop Garvey movement - imagine if the black double agents hadnt infultrated his ranks the black star line would have cleared millions and black wealth would have been solidified as a force. The only way to deal with whites is by economic and military force. Garvey knew this.
That final heartless premature unresearched article that was untimely published. Caused Marcus Garvey to die. Sometimes the use of words in our language can be more powerful than any other weapon known to mankind. I regret to say.
Inspiration! Dont be sad you mighty race! The vision is now, what will you do? Will you talk about it or will you be the one to carry on tradition? In the name of Freedom
Perhaps he should have used the vessels of the Black Star line to actually provide transportation of our people from america, the carribean and europe back to Africa. During that time in history it would have been very likely that the black people would have jumped at the chance to rid themselves of their oppressors.
no offense brother but our oppressor would have been waiting on us to get Africa. Dont forget that Africans in Africa have been colonized worst than Africans in America. That is how they took us from Africa in the first place. Last, to beat this vampire, we must learn his strengths and weakness and habits and secretly and persistently infiltrate his organizations as subservant until the battle call is alarmed and then take his head off like our father Amen-Ra.
Sounds like a good idea, but you would think that the oppressor would see that as a threat b/c if the Africans of Americas went back to share their ideas with the other Africans, the oppressors would automatically think that Africans would smarten up and build other societies and then one day wage war on the US, possibly ending white supremacy. Its almost like they cant leave or go back. Sadly at the end of the day, all we want is our own piece of the pie and our children happy.
@SocietysNitemare FYI, his vision ruined many African Americans and caused a lot of people I loved (African Americans I know) to be real prideful, closed-minded, socialist jerks!
@Tyronor He cost them a lot of money but for some reason everyone wants to forget that. His two shipping companies only stayed in business for a total of 3 years. Estimates at the losses are between $600,000 and a $1,200,000. There were families that put everything they owned into those stocks and yet he is heralded like some king that saved Black people. He didn't. Maybe sharing a vision was worth the investment they made, but it should not have cost them everything.
@imhotep1 Interesting. We find him to be brilliant and undeniable in his power and strength on one side, and on the other we find him child-like and unable to consult with enough weathered Black Seamen (and there were plenty) to purchase a ship at a reasonable cost. I don't blame people for wanting to defend him, but it's not him we should be looking at, it's history in general. What he offered was powerful. Where he fell short, he fell very short. History is rarely "all or nothing".
@kemetkush Sorry for the delay responding. We had rolling electrical blackouts and then no water for the past five days. I live in a "warm area" that just experienced a record breaking (and pipe bursting) snap.
What do you mean by this question? I learn by looking into and researching further, what others say at times. I don't know how to research this question. Thanks.
I agree we need people to care about this and come together the thing is how do we the black nation (Pan Africanism) get along and systematically understanding white supremacy deconstruct this fucked up structure that tends to bind us although we as a black people have been trying to defy it for so long? This is so great that its available...its bitter to see my people suffer and for heroic angels to tragically die...MLK, Malcolm, Garvey, Biko...we need to modify and follow their steps.
@oneamen: No MAN can be FREE till he has a country he can call his own to be free in. Where people are not forced to accept you, but a place you truely belong.
I want to give up you enough rsepct in sharing the life of Brother Marcus Garvey, because as you know every year when we celebrate Mosiah Day which is a tribute to Marcus Garvey it is so joyful when we learn about this great Pan-African leader and hero amongst African people of the world.
Garvey had the right idea, but he needed to plan out his vision more thoroughly. Its too bad that the movement got broken up like it did. He had a grand vision, and someday, Blacks will be able to stand together and make his vision become reality.
One thing I would like to mention is that one reason Garvey fell is because some black people were jealous and were not united, It is up to the black mothers to teach their children to be united and work towards the betterment of their people and their neighbors. A struggle does not need a leader. The struggle is in the harts of the individual. And if the struggle is kept alive, leaders will come and go and the struggle will succeed.

@JTheTeach I don't know if your white black asian or whatever. Im African or black and have a understanding of the history the past 2000yrs to the present of black people and the western white man. Its been one of a master slave relationship. Basically African black people are suppose to have the self determination and consciouness of whites not matter what. We're not suppose to have our own.
arronnov 1 year ago
@The Beach With our our own self determination and consciousness we produce Egypt Nubia Ethiopia Great Zimbabwe Zulu Mali Songhai Ghana Ashanti and etc through the time of our history on the continent of Africa which goes back over a million yrs as the original people. The basics for math science music agriculture and etc comes from the black mind.
arronnov 1 year ago
@JTheTeach In your Utophian mind you want blacks to stay with whites or a group of people who are the main reason for black people not wanting to have self determination and our own consciouness for the purpose of whites using blacks for their own survival and preservation. I don't think so! I don't care about so-called racism but I do care about the survival of black people which has been suffering more and more each yrs since having contact with whites and western asian arabs.
arronnov 1 year ago
@arronnov I think you are missing my point. I don't want any person subjugated to the whims of another, that would be truely horrible. As well I have somewhat of a grasp upon the history and present reality of european/non-european relationships of exploitation. I am well aware that much of what is considered progress today comes from a eurocentric bias. What I am supporting is the non-recognition of race and the reintroduction of the recognition of unique cultures. You should care.
JTheTeach 1 year ago
@JTheTeach Well that is not going to happen! Western white civilization is anti anybody else culture on the grand scheme of things. Now I realize other cultures do the samething but you can see and have seen through history more tolorance from other people. Western civilization the past 600yrs to the present has labelled pretty much every other culture and people its come in contact across the globe as primitive savage pagan uncivilized non beautiful and etc.
arronnov 1 year ago
@JTheTeach While doing these things western civilization claims things from other people as their own in their writings of history. If you change the universities schools and etc of western civilization your labelled as psuedo or changing history aka whites version of their history. Perfect example of this is with black people. We've been written out of history by western civilization. The Egyptian are credited with being something other than black African people.
arronnov 1 year ago
@JTheTeach When history culture and etc on black African people it has been control by whites in their institution of higher learning so we know by history the angle whites have portray blacks as in history. The same thing was done to the Natives of the Americas and all over the planet.
arronnov 1 year ago
@JTheTeach With the that being said as black man proud of being African while learning and regaining the essence and knowledge of my ancestor on daily basis as best I can. Why would blacks or more important trust the majority of whites and the intention towards black people when it comes to our own self determination and knowledge of our ownselves. We have history the past 2000yrs that shows that western civilization is anti African.
arronnov 1 year ago
@JTheTeach The majority of time whites are only interest in black people and our history culture ways and etc when its in their interest for their survival or subjectgation of black people. Basically a master and slave or control relationship! If not we will just kill you when we don't need you no more. All one has to do is study European history and see the treatment toward the whites on their ownselves the past 1500yrs.
arronnov 1 year ago
@JTheTeach You must keep in mind the concept of race is western white thing! I don't mind or care if other groups of humans celebrity their own uniqueness. That's what where suppose to do. When you try to force every body to act the same in one borg like culture which is western civilization yesterday and today. We get death destruction and chaos on the the people that western civilization has and what's to force their the way on to gain power and live the way they want too!
arronnov 1 year ago
@The Teach You support the non-recognition of race but that hasn't been a part of the blueprint in western civilization past or present. I live in central america while in the military and got the chance to travel to the different countries in central and south America. The same persecution and oppression that the America has and continues to black people is alive and well in central and south America.
arronnov 1 year ago
@JTheTeach This is part of a system of white supremacy to stop and keep black people from rising up and having our own identify knowledge of self and self determination. You get whites saying I don't do anything to black people which very may be true but the benefit from this system and doing nothing about. I don't aspect them too either but when blacks what our own identiy self determination and knowledge many whites fights this talking about some universal oneness or togetherness bullshit.
arronnov 1 year ago
@The Beach Black people suffer from a psychological and mind position of white consciousness instead of one a black one. Many other people suffer the same thing. Asians suffer it so bad that the bleach their skin to look white or in record numbers daily get cosmetic surgery to change their looks to a western white look. That's shows condition that people have suffered since being in contact fully the past 600yrs. We want to be white or have and maintain European consciousness.
arronnov 1 year ago 2
@The Tech I look into the cultures of the natives of the Americas as well as Africa Asia and other parts of world that the western white man travelled to calling himself discovering the new world that was already there. The indians that are still alive in the Americas suffers from things that before contact with whites that the they didn't have or suffered very little. Obesity Alcoholism family issue and etc are things common place now.
arronnov 1 year ago
@JTheTeach Africans Indians and Asians have subjectgated to a western white mindset of materlism like no time before in these cultures. Where led to believe having the basic things for survival wasn't and isn't good enough. We must consume because thats progress and do things in a western way to thrive. If thats the case how did my ancestors survive without the help or interferance of whites for over 10000yrs without their consciouness or mindset..
arronnov 1 year ago
@The Teach Africans Indians and many others suffer from disease that we never had before. We eat poison altered unnatural food and water that western civilization tells us is technology and progress. All one has to do is look at America with a open mind and open thought. The so-called crown jewel of western civilization and child of Europe is in total chaos death and destruction who spreads its version of Utopia to the world like a plaque by force and war.

Basically any minority uprising is a treat to white capitalism. MG was Black capitalism, as Tulsa Oklahoma in the 20's as well. MG was no different than any black born outside America. That was his flaw. The cultures are different. Haitians and Jamaicans liberated themselves by blood. Niggas were liberated by a paper.
djkaneck1 3 years ago
@madmax - MG's mistake was enstilling Black pride and self determination to an oppressed people. White America hated any Black person that dared to free themselves of the mental chains of slavery. That's obvious b/c at anytime Blacks tried to seek human, civil or equal rights it was met with Great White resistance. & That was MG's only mistake.
yungrichluv 3 years ago
OK, for the last time: The people who scuppered him can't have been loyal by definition, can they? Alot of others he trusted couldn't do the jobs assigned them. At the end, it was HIS judgement that was at fault. What are you saying? That if any organization, gov. etc. wants to stop anyone all they have to do is put a few spies in their set-up and that guarantees it will fall? So black people ultimately are at the mercy of "Whitey"? We will be if we don't take accountability. One love.
madmax8903 3 years ago 2
Damn MM u nailed it! If Whites wants to stop blacks they can. I invite u 2 research the study of Blacks who ever tried 2 make a difference i.e. Tulsa Riot Acts, Rosewood, NEthing after the reconstruction era specifically with freed slaves n Louisiana had the original black wall st, civil rights movement (how many blacks died for the cause), MX, MLK, ME, Nat turner, all of our black leaders were killed b/c they wanted change. I pray daily for Obamas safety. whites demise is a black nation uprooted
yungrichluv 3 years ago
Do you fear death? So what if they die for a cause? The reason the white man was able to rape so many generations was because they told us that their white Jesus died for our sins and as such we ought to obey them, for they were given the mandate to save us from damnation through their white Jesus ("who was killed because he wanted change"). See Manifest Destiny for example!
kingdomaffiliate 2 years ago
@KA wtf r u talking about?! what do u mean so what they died for the cause - did u actually read my entire comment? obviously not. the civil rts pioneers died for the cause it does matter. the white man didnt only use religion to keep us oppressed he used violence, manipulation, division, etc etc. I agree w/ ur comment but read 1st b4 ur so quick to comment. what the hell does fearing death have to do w/ my comment? do me a favor dont respond 2 my comments just bypass it & read the others!
yungrichluv 2 years ago
Ok. Calm down. Point Taken! But all I'm trying to say is the whites can stop us only if we let them, but not if they kill us.... They may kill one, but ten more will rise to the defense as highlighted in djkaneck1's comment about Haitians and Jamaicans!!!!! I made the comment in light of you fearing Obamas safety!
kingdomaffiliate 2 years ago
He never made a mistake, but trust his own! He realised this himself, while it may come across a bit alarming... it simply means that he was preaching to a people who were not bold enough to believe the lessons he was trying to teach them. They feared death and preferred to be subjugated by the white than stand to fight against oppression. The fact that we are having this dialogue now means that he has accomplished a lot! The contributions of our ancestors never die as long as we're still alive!
kingdomaffiliate 2 years ago
Did you know that the same year that he predicted that he would come back again and be a " terror to the enemies of black liberty ..." was the year MALCOLM X was born?!
RSTAR2009 3 years ago
He made mistakes, but Garvey was a great man and the original. Everything positive with "black" before it that came up afterwards has Garvey somewhere at its root. He was the fountainhead.
madmax8903 3 years ago
what mistakes did he make? he enstilled black pride and self determination at the end of 400 yrs of slavery to an oppressed people. he is he greatest black leader there ever was and that will ever be. if he made a mistake it was trust. he trusted people. people that was hired by the US govt 2 ensure that MG failed & everything he touched failed. the US's plan is & always will be to keep Blacks oppressed. B/c the day Blacks "wake UP" they will be met by White resistance & history teaches us that!
yungrichluv 3 years ago
You answered your own question, didn't you? He trusted the wrong people, and gave important positions to people who weren't qualified to fill them. Great man, nonetheless.
madmax8903 3 years ago
mayb u just don't get it or i'm not being clear. if u pick a group of people that have proved their loyalty to u & 2 ur cause then those people have gained ur trust. its just like Malcolm X he trusted Elijah M. He believed this man was great. but EM was screwing young girls. MG unbeknowst 2 him trusted people who worked for the govt. i'm still not seeing what mistakes he made. had he known they were traitors he would not have trusted them obviously
yungrichluv 3 years ago
But it wasn't just one person or two. His error was to trust too deeply people he liked, and to trust them with thousands of dollars. In financial affairs he needed an honest competent person to advise him. I learn a lot from Garvey, not only his virtues but perhaps especially from his vices. Too often the people he considered loyal proved themselves untrustworthy or incompetent. Clearly this showed less than impeccable judgement. That wasn't the only mistake he made, but it was enough.
madmax8903 3 years ago
madmax do u know what a traitor, a snitch & an informant is? these people are persons designed to befriend u & to gain your loyalty. this clips showed how many people the govt actually had as informants. just like Malcolm X the guys who killed him were from the NOI. they too were informants. I guess the people u have in your corner are angels hand picked by GOD only. I guess u never made a wrong or bad choice. MG mistake was not in who he trusted b/c they gained his trust as they were PAID to do

Perhaps he should have used the vessels of the Black Star line to actually provide transportation of our people from america, the carribean and europe back to Africa. During that time in history it would have been very likely that the black people would have jumped at the chance to rid themselves of their oppressors.
HakWise 4 years ago
no offense brother but our oppressor would have been waiting on us to get Africa.

SFwizardoakland 3 years ago
Sounds like a good idea, but you would think that the oppressor would see that as a threat b/c if the Africans of Americas went back to share their ideas with the other Africans, the oppressors would automatically think that Africans would smarten up and build other societies and then one day wage war on the US, possibly ending white supremacy. Its almost like they cant leave or go back. Sadly at the end of the day, all we want is our own piece of the pie and our children happy.

@JRM733 He was conned by the ship company that sold him the ships with inflated prices that were six times what they really were worth.
