  • I love all types of music, but this guy just blows me away. Just magical absolutley magical.

  • @1948treetop so all the reason to call what Johnny expresses as "Maths Magic" - enjoy!

  • I got chills. This man is the most incredible singer and

interpreter of a lyric I have ever heard. Effortless and so

heartfelt. What a gift he is. Whay hasn't he received a

Kennedy Center Honor? He'spast his 75th birthday &

still selling out concert halls. *****

  • @jeh500 -absolutely. and many people have asked that same question- -some people have received (the Kennedy honor) twice. People- JM's fans- provide him with the greatest honor of appreciation. While institutions are important- sometimes they take themselves in too much grandeur and lose sight of who they really serve- the people- not themselves.

  • Johnny Mathis taped this BBC Television Spectacular on May 25, 1977, at their Television Center in London, during his British Tour that year. It was aired later that year, on September 30, 1977.

  • @19rebel57 - Aired on Johnny's birthday- how nice! thanks for the info, Maria. I knew it was his own special uk BBC event- but not the particular's.

such a poignant delivery and expression.

  • Just having a "mooch" through You Tube,,,,,had to stop and really listen to this,,,,,,,only Johnny can sing with such emotion. Love it!!

  • @mathismagic37 - yes, yes, yes. And this song shows it Carol, almost better than any other. Such sensitivity. Enjoy:)

  • Only Johnny Mathis could sing this song with such emotion, tenderness...love his eyes..The most magnificent singer ever there was. Jane in Ohio

  • @gemeyes2 - it is a great video special- and this number really goes to the heart- his emotion is very palpable. Glad you enjoyed it Jane.

  • johnny mathis is simply the finest singer i have ever heard.

  • @georgemcm1967 - agreed- he is - as the song "one' states a "singular sensation"- stands alone- always has - always will. Enjoy.

  • Thank you so much for posting this Lenore. This song always makes me cry. It's so beautiful!

  • @singchef1965 - oh hi Bruce! So nice to hear from you. I'm so glad you like it- you're a real romantic - just like Mr. M.- with an angelic voice to match. Please enjoy:)

  • Right now, for me, that's the saddest song of all time. Perhaps that;s because it's about parents growing apart. Or perhaps it's because of JM's version.

JM's not human, you know. Like Orbison and Pitney, They are all aliens. You know that. Right???

  • @fhardyb - this song- as others express- is full of emotion- interesting, apparently, this was the only song (released) written by the composer. As for 'other worldliness'- I will only agree that Johnny's voice and essence is in many ways ethereal.

  • I saw Johnny sing this in concert once..beautiful. I cried.. The greatest singer ever there was!

  • @gemeyes2 - how beautiful- i can only imagine what that must have been like- how very touching- clearly it touches him- you see it in the last shots. Thank you for sharing your experience. He is - the best - by far.

  • Johnny Mathis has a fantastic voice, he sings this song absolutely beautifully.

This song is on the 'I only have eyes for you' album which is excellent, I was only 4 when this album came out and his voice and this album have stayed with me.

Another gem on that album he sang was 'The Hungry Years' if you get a chance to listen to this it's another beautifully crafted song.

    Johnny Mathis just pure gold.

  • @mozfather59 - he does and it is- apparently the only song this songwriter wrote- so fitting. I am not aware of that song "The Hungry Years"- i'm going to look for it. Thank you! I'm so glad you are enjoying this- .

  • @mozfather59

The hungry years is my favourite JM song, written by Sedaka, it's about Sonny & Cher

  • so much truth in this piece that it can bring tears to your eyes. Must have been magic in little old Gilmer, Texas where Johnny Mathis, Freddie King and Don Henley were all born.

  • All heart and pure soul at its purest.....love is love is lovei love in this song...

  • BRAVO!!! This is ART! The highest honours COMPOSER Michael Moore who created this incredibly beautiful song , where poetry and melody are in complete harmony, also to the ARRANGER - what's his name? - who wrote the unforgettable orchestration (score) and last but not least to SINGER Johnny Mathis as the unique and unimitable interpreter. Mr. Johnny Mathis is both one of the greatest performers of the 20th century and a real gentleman.

Thanks a million for sharing this tremendous video.

  • @koonwong100 you're very welcome- thank you for sharing your enthusiasm- I don't know the arrangers name- if I locate it - I'll certainly share it. Johnny's gifts are all you say and more. Please continued to enjoy.

  • This song IS his song, and he sings about his mom and dad. He does in my ears and heart anyway. I can see the sorrow in his eyes, and I feel like crying with him. (also lost my mom and dad) He is still dealing with the loss, he says. His parents were a lot like this I understand. Strong familybonds between them I am certain. From Norway: Berit.

  • @beweau - it is very poignant- and clearly to this day, Johnny's expression of feeling for his parents is always so loving and respectful. He's an unusual man - celebrity changes nothing that really matter. I am glad the song has meaning for you.

  • Happy birthday, Mr. Johnny.

  • @bh5606 - From your mouth to his ears! I hope he hears and maybe is watching! That would be great. This is a special song for him as I recall- as he says here.

  • AMADO E MUITO LINDO JOHNNY MATHIS CONTINUA CANTANDO MUITO,QUE VOZ ! FARÁ DIA 30 DESTE MES DE SETEMBRO 75 ANOS QUE MARAVILHA ! PARABENS QUERIDO VIVA MUITOS ANOS .

  • @estaellyte Thank you for your tribute to Johnny and his birthday- he is a gift to all of us and the world. Wishing him all the best for many more years to come.

  • This song has been in my life for over 30 years...I never tire of it, and it never ceases to move me. "...pines and manzanitas..." You can almost smell them...

    Thanks for this treat!

  • @Avalonyx - what a legacy of enjoyment - to live with you that long. You're very welcome. Johnny delivers this as with all his music - brings his full self- and in this case his soulful self. Enjoy

  • This song always leave me in tears.J.M has never been better,a beautiful song and sentiments exquisitely performed.

  • @rroyboy46 - it does touch the heart- he does- so clearly he is feeling is own experience. Glad to have it here for you.

  • i have the lp but nothing to play it on. i was so very happy to find it here.

this is one of my all time favorites thanks lkm

  • @TheBobcat75 - so glad you found it! If you can download it from realplayer you can convert it to an MP3- then you'll have it to listen to. You're welcome- Enjoy!

  • I saw Johnny Mathis sing this song live in concert in the early 1990's ... at the end, he reached up and wiped a tear from his eye.

  • @RoseAndFeather - a very sensitive man, he seems to be. a very moving song. As he says- it reminds him of his own background. Must touch a chord.

  • @lenoremewton beautiful song by Johnny...I've always loved his voice. A true living legend.

  • @janieusa - so true, Janie. Johnny is beyond description. Please enjoy.

  • this is one of the most beautiful songs i have ever heard.

  • @davidwalsh66 - beautiful, sensitive lyrics. I don't think anyone else could do this justice with an equally sensitive and 'vulnerable' delivery. Very glad you found it. Thanks. Enjoy:)

  • I have tried and tried to buy this as a single off iTunes etc. to no avail , can anyone tell me where I can find this to buy as a download .

  • @nookerg - i don't have it in an mp3 either- I hope you can find it. If I do find it I'll try to remember and let you know.

  • I love this song it has been difficult to find, it reminds me of my mother I saw Johnny perform this in Cardiff about 30 years ago after my mothers passing It still makes me cry. Thank you for posting it

  • @nookerg - oh, i'm so glad you found it. Several other people have posted it- it is nice to see it live though-and this particular performance is very poignant. You can feel the emotion and see it in his face- very palpable. I'm sorry it brings you back to a sad memory. It's a special gift though, to sing and touch people's hearts. All the best- you're very welcome. Take care.

  • Thank you for posting this,I remember this TV Special being aired..He does a great version of Pieces of dreams on this too...any chance of that?....

  • @trevdrums - So glad you like it! I'd have to check re: Pieces of Dreams . However, I really don't think you can find a better version (while all wonderful) of Johnny singing Pieces of Dreams- than that fabulous performance on Johnny Carson- if you've not seen it- check 19rebel57's channel- it's out of this world.

  • Yes,I have the Johnny Carson version and the version from the Canadian concert...Thank you for the reply.

  • I know some people prefer the Canadian Rockies version which is great- for some reason the Carson one resonates for me more. We are just choosing between "great and great"! I have had a few other requests from this same video- so I may have to do songs that are not already up there - if I do.Maybe at some point- or someone else may beat me to it! thanks again for your comment.

  • @lenoremewton Do you have a copy of the Canadian Rockies special? I have been trying to get my hands on one for years. Can you tell me where I would be able to purchase one?

  • This song is so mysterious and romantic.....and most beautifully sung by fabulous Johnny. I love him dearly, and have been a fan of his for 53 years now. He looks great, he sings great......I am so glad we have him.

  • @eria01 - It is such a beautiful portrait of family love. How great you've enjoyed him all that time. We are- very lucky. I'm glad you're enjoying this.

  • thank you so much for posting this song plus all the other JOHNNY MATHIS songs ......so very relaxing and beautiful.

  • @eria01 - You're very welcome- so glad you found them. Johnny's voice and persona- all rolled together- truly touch the heart strings. Enjoy,!

  • Hey Lenore - Speaking of Elvis (which we were) can you possibly watch his SOLITAIRE w/o tears?

    'Doubt it!

    Curt

  • phenominal song...about 40 years back i heard it for the first time and it still has its effect on me now as it did then...rich addition to u-tube for sure

  • @WinnersCircleMan - it's such a sensitive song- the way Johnny delivers it and his expression at the end is so touching. Glad you found it again and rekindled that same experience. thank you.

  • How inspirational is this song? Inspirational enough to make a motion picture? Just think about how many musical variations could be made of the main musical theme throughout the movie. And of course Johnny would lend his magical voice to some more equally haunting songs based on these variations. This song is so rich in visual imagery and there's so evidently a story of depth between the lines .

  • Thank you for all of your comments here- this is a rich song lyrically, and imparts great emotion. I'm glad you that you found it. Enjoy.

  • I'd just like to add that I've just discovered this lyric is autobiographical for Michael Moore and the back story involves how his Father, a defence lawyer, was forced to relocate with his family having defended victims of the McCarthy witch hunt. It makes the song so much more heatbreaking.

  • My favourite part of "When a child is born" is the end as it fades to silence. The song comes from John's 1976 album "I only have eyes for you" which I lost some years ago. However each time I hear "When a child is born" on TV or the radio I wait for the silence at the end and I well up because in my imagination I can hear the the opening notes of the next track on the album. And the name of that song? "Yellow roses on her gown", and it is with infinite joy that I find it posted here. Thankyou.

  • this song reminds me of my parents and how their love has endured. They took me to his concerts as a child and his voice has stayed with me xx

  • That is really a very beautiful memory- - and a shared one as it seems this song, when written and given to Johnny, reminded him of his own family life. 'Glad you are enjoying it.

  • Johnny Mathis was my wife's favorite singer and we both loved this song. It was my favorite but she loved anything he sang. From the start of his career up until the modern times when his voice matured. Thanks for this.

  • No other can sing a song such as this with such feeling and beautiful tone.......I love his

voice and how perfect he sings

  • If the expression 'fits like a kid glove' resonates- this is perfection. So glad you are enjoying it.

  • simply one of the best songs ever written....saw Mathis do this at his Carnegie Hall debut.......thanks so much for posting -- a live version had been on, and then it disappared......now if someone could find the Mathis/Jane Olivor Oscars performance!

  • beautiful lyrics- i can see how they captured his attention. Must have been wonderful at Carnegie Hall. That would be great- the Oscar performance! Glad you enjoy this and are able to see it 'live' again.

  • He looks so handsome and this is a fantastic song that is so touching. I love it. Thanks for sharing.

  • Agreed- on all levels. I'm very pleased to be able to share it. Aren't we all lucky to live in the time of this lovely human spirit of song and expressed emotion. Thanks- enjoy:)

  • It cant get much better than this.

Classic Mathis - Thanks for the video

  • Thank you very much and you're welcome! Johnny's diversity always impresses me- beyond impress. His delivery is so personal here. Enjoy.

  • Wonderful. Thank you for sharing this jewel.

  • you're so welcome- i'm very glad to be able to- we're all lucky recipients of Johnny's gifts. Enjoy!
