How big a setup would be needed to power a typical home? I ask because things like this fascinate me and I wonder how far off we are from being able to take an average house "off grid" using solar sources.
Hey dude, I'm subscribed to you and like your stuff and all that but......man......you sure that ain't one of them still thingies? Looks like moonshine ops there ole Dan boy. Keep up the good work.
Are we sure that you are not runing this off a battery? that motor is spining on rhe slow side to make 12v. and your meter is at a junction, just where are them leads going?. i would like to think that this is possible, but you see phony stuff on youtube all the time. if this is the real deal great job!
what is the temp. difference needed for a sterling engine to run? i figure it is different depending on the size of the motor. but let's say for a 12 volt generator to run what would the temp. difference need to be? thanks.
1 meter = 1kw, that's 3412BTU/h directed to a 2" surface. Variables (clouds, trees.) will alter that number.
Converting to °F is a huge variable, there's no way he could give you a temp that would be optimal for every Stirling engine. If the surface temp of the road is 108°F on a sunny day, then a magnification of 19.68 will bring the 2" focal temp to 2125.44°F
Dan, I see the idea here and I think the stirling engine is a great idea--however I don't have the tools or technical knowledge to actually construct one. However, I digress...couldn't you improve cooling by making the flywheel a fan instead of a solid piece of metal? It could direct cool airflow over the heat sink and improve cooling significantly with little cost in mechanical work.
You need to hook that up to a large DC, put it through a DC-AC converter and see what kind of power you can sustain with that. I have a crazy idea, but I would need to generate about 10 kilowatts.
take those panels and put them in the basement.first you take a parabolic solar concentrator and put an robotic arm on it to follow the suns path.then make the focal point a mirrored shape cone that will send the light down through mirrored glass tubing straight into a mirrored shape glass box inside the mirrored shape box will be several solar panels that spin to keep them cool the mirrored box must have the mirrors inward to reflect the light sending from the parabolic focal point.ken van horn
Solar panels today can capture 20% of the suns energy. That means we could potentially get 5X (!) the amount of energy if we focus on how to do it. 20% efficiency isn't great, but it can easily power a home & electric car. At 75% efficiency, it BLOWS AWAY the cost of oil, coal, and (so called) "natural" gas. If we reach 75% efficiency, it's over for fossil fuels. This is one of the best areas to focus on - Let's get to 75%!!! Build things in your garage, experiment, study, invest, encourage!
@ElRollio82 At night? You turn out the lights and go to bed. Really though, I'm always taken aback when people ass this question. It's really silly, here we are discussing how much $ can be saved by solar & someone attempts to throw what they may consider a wrench in the entire idea. @ nite you use a battery that you charged during day or you pull from the grid where they've stored mass solar energy in their BIG batteries. Anyway, it's bedtime for me, can someone turn out the sun please?
@pmryan25 no its quite a legitimate question. do you have any idea the size of the batteries and inverters that would be needed to run even a small town overnight? And thats assuming you have sun everyday. What if you have a week or two of overcast conditions? The size and cost of infrastructure capable of storing that much energy is just completely impractical
@ElRollio82 We're saying use the energy from the sun when it's there and from the grid when it's not, no one has mentioned taking entire towns off the grid (yet). There's groups of people who like to ask "What about at night or if it rains?" Well, during those times your energy is like it used to be - fossil fuel energy from the grid. When it's cloudy or sunny, it's clean solar energy, and cheaper. Is this more clear now ElRolio? Seeing the light? A lil bit?
@ElRollio82 Give it some thought, I'm sure you can make it work out in your head, you're smart. If not, I guess we'll just stay on fossil fuels forever.
A variety of fluids have been tested to transport the sun's heat, including water, air, oil, and sodium, but molten salt was selected as best. Molten salt is used in solar power tower systems because it is liquid at atmosphere pressure, it provides an efficient, low-cost medium in which to store thermal energy, its operating temperatures are compatible with today's high-pressure and high-temperature steam turbines, and it is non-flammable and nontoxic.

Hey Dan, my name is Kyle Glenn and I work at the PSL solar furnace. We are building a dish stirling engine and have a 6' parabolic concentrator. We need to coat it and were going to use ReflecTech mirror film from NREL. The film on this concentrator seems to be more crisp, is it better than 94% reflective?
I invented a breakthrough renewable source of energy that violates the law of energy conservation. I have a proof that there are phenomena that violate the law of energy conservation. I am looking for $6M for a prototype and patents.
I always like watching you vid's, good stuff mate, can I get your wife to talk to mine, so I can spend all my time doing stuff like this..... ooops, gotta go dig the garden... just curious, what do you use as a water pump, my next stirling build will be to circulate water for the pond, to reduce electric pump time, solar powered of course, yes I could use solar panels, batteries etc to paower a 12 volt pump, but these as just so much more fasinating... :o)

but, and soon.. you must walk pursuing to the sun., .no? the antenna is not going to go behind the sun.. that is.. , already shift of position.. , and it is necessary to move it.. , .how ?
Engine is well-made. However video does not show water flowing through cooling jacket. It looks like lower water valve is closed. It would make sense to use power from generator to pump cooling water. Also no good view of power piston.
@shirah601 Hi, I ran it with no water, did not get a chance to do another video because someone bougth the engine. In regards to the comment reply, I try to reply, we have 200 videos and get about 100 comments a day:-) Thank you for the comment.
hi may be if u use the warmed water for ur personal hotwatersupply (shower etc.) u can use the heat twice
so u just install a tank for hot water above the coolingunit and the water will cirkulate itself (hot water up cool water down) if the "wasteheat" of ur stirling is enough
the higher the voltage rateing the higher the voltage you get out and amps, nice vido. the best green power is in battery powerd electric gen. good luck
Cool that's close to my sunlight concentrator. If I had money I'd begin to build my gravity generator though, because solar cells are not developed well enough (yet)
hey Dan your sure it produces 15 watts? that is CRAZY if its true man. Cause i have a mirror 4 times more area than your 35 inch one so that means it can give me 60 watts with this engine. I really want to make one like this engine
This is way more practical than burning stick and melting bits of broken glass, I'm looking forward to seeing the future videos with this engine. This video has just earned you one more subscriber!
hey dan. I have a couple of hot water heaters Im cutting up for the startings of a large stirling engine. Any one know how many horsepower the Ryder ericcson stirling engines were? MUDDy
As something of an electric vehicle buff, I'm fairly familiar with DC electric motors. You may want to check that you have the motor turning in the correct direction; it will generate current in either direction, but it will generate more current (and less resistive heat) when turning in one direction rather than the other due to the internal brushing attitude.
for some reason that make me think of old steam engines? looks like it generates a lot of heat. man all these people willing to do the work on stuff to help a+ cant wait to see tomorrow! maybe get some ideas myself?
Nice vid.. What if you installed a peltier at focal point... with the cool side glued to a water bowl... you would get some wattage - no moving parts, etc.. for a while...
I've been tempted to build something like this, maybe based on the old Mother Earth News solar collector plans and an upscaled Gingery Sterling engine.
If it can generate enough power per day to see an average person through the night with LED lighting, and can be built just out of home metal castings and junk, then you're REALLY on to something!
I've always thought it'd be possible to track the sun with muscle wire. It shrinks when heated. If several muscle wires are attached like cables between the mirror and its target, when the hot point drifts away from the ideal point on the Stirling, the sunlight hits the wire, which contracts and pulls the mirror back to the correct orientation.
I'm not sure why we need a variety of solutions as you suggested. If we find one that works well universally, then we ought to go with it. Hydrogen, magnetic motors and stirling engines are in the lead, I think.
I was wanting to know what happens if you back this up with a fresnell lens on the cool side of the cylinder at the same time as the mirror? That is the design that I have in mind. I want to use a 60" sat dish with the motors to track the sun accross the sky so you can have peak output all day long. Thanx day for all your work.
I like the idea of the parabolic mirror. Wouldn't the right "shape" track the suns path to keep the focal point on the hot side, longer, perhaps a days worth of sunlight? Also, couldn't the electricity, regardless of how much is produced, be continually stored and then expended when a "useful" quantity is stored?
Well its quite different from your stirling engine. It has a displacer cylinder of about 1 liter and minimum torque required to makeit turn is 0.26 Nm
Hope that answers your question.
I just wanted to know how the weight of the flywheel affects the performance. If you could experiment and find out it would be great.
Hi Dan, can you place some extra weights on your fly wheel and tell me what difference it makes. I am trying to biuild a sterling engine and want to know how heavy my flywheel should be.
I wonder when Sterling Energy Systems- or one the other companies developing advanced sterling motors will have a reasonable priced unit available for the public. I found one company that makes parabolic heated stirlings for about $20000 a unit, and produces about 3.5 kw. But I haven't found a company online yet that just offers the engine. Just curious if anyone hear has any information about purchasing more advanced stirlings, because right now most of what I find are toy models
Yup, we'll be off petroleum in NO time with such technology. I am constantly hearing about "new energy sources" to replace oil, but when I ask for specifics, there are just glazed looks and mumbling.
Their is no one answer to that question. We're going to have to use a lot of different technologies such as wind, solar, hydro-electric, geo-thermal, etc and accept one very cold, hard fact. We are also going to have to learn to live with less energy. That is where its going to bite. Kiss cars goodbye for example. This nation in particular (the US) bet on an incredibly energy inefficient lifestyle and that will come to an end like it or not.
I am an engineer & love this stuff! You are building a future! BUT WTF! "kiss cars good bye" WOW you guys are out there! I bet your pushin for $10gl Dino fuel (old solar) too! Energy makes the world go round! Why not focus on a "no carbon car" I heard that the cars of today are 90% less carbon emissions than the 70s. Sounds like we are going the right way! You guys think green but make your selves look like you need a religion or somting? Clean is good! Green is blue!!
That's not true, there are several designs for stirling engines that have significant power, but they're used for nuclear material and are hellishly expensive because of the precision engineering involved.
On your web site you mention you're in the process of making 500W engines. I emailed you but got no response. So what's the status on the motors? I REALLY want one! And before September would be REALLY nice. The economy is going down the tube by then, so it's to your advantage to get it done by then too. :-)
Scale is the issue with these things! It's GREAT that you got it to work, but scaling it up to a usable, productive level is where you're going to run into issues. You aren't the FIRST to propose this, and nor will you be the last.
Absolutely fantastic! An excellent prototype for small-scale future power that can be produced with more readily available materials (metal vs silicon)!
I see you have a 56 inch dish, and it produces 15 watts... perhaps with 2 cylinders it would produce greater and more even torque to drive the motor.
If you don't mind my asking, how much electric can be generated by a conventional solar panel of comparable size to this set up?
i was planning in doing a college project using a parabolic miror, but my physic´s teacher told me that in order to be effective it must follow the sun!!!!!
could you please give an update on that
of corse i´ll give you and the greenpowerscience the credits
I device to follow the sun is fairly easy to make. Since it only has to move slowly, a small electric motor geared way way down is enough to do the moving.
The electrical circuit can be based on just two photodetectors on either side of a small vane. When the vane points straight at the sun, the two see the same light.
Dan, I've seen a couple of stirling engines on youtube where the reciprocating piston has been attached to the flywheel of a rotary permanent magnet alternator on it. Steam pistons too. I'm wondering if there would be any point to using a reciprocating magnetic generator, like in the "shake flashlights" that were sold on tv a while ago. The whole apparatus would be one big piston moving back and forth, no mechanical change.
Also, love the fading in and out, makes you look magical and stuff.
I do not know if it would do more that power some small LEDs but it is a good idea. The design is tricky as is, I think it would be a tough task. Do you have the videos code so I can find them on Youtube. I have seen them too, just cannot find them. Thank you for the great message.
Yes, there is, they are more compact and lighter. The free piston engines designed to be very efficient and lightweight use these type of alternators. NASA has a bunch of information on these, and Sunpower and Infinia both make these type of engines. Check out mowerofdoom's videos...he has an engine with one...actually there are a number of videos with linear alternators.
I would love to do a solar power system here in Indiana but we get creamed almost everyday by the chemtrails, very few sunny days here anymore. Going to be a bad yer for crops, no bee's, no sun, lots of aluminum in the soil.
Your welcome, just walked in the house from making more chemtrail videos. They just turned what would have been a very pretty sunrise into garbage. Take lots of flaxseed/oil, from what i read it helps purge the aluminum from the brain tissue.
whats this? =)

@pmryan25 pretty sure thats not what you said but lets see about this entirely new argument.
even a small coal fired generating unit say.. 250mw takes around 24 - 36 hours to go from completely shut down to ready to be grid connected.
so the fossil fuel generators would have to be running 24-7 anyway which kind of defeats the purpose the way i see it

I always like watching you vid's, good stuff mate, can I get your wife to talk to mine, so I can spend all my time doing stuff like this..... ooops, gotta go dig the garden... just curious, what do you use as a water pump, my next stirling build will be to circulate water for the pond, to reduce electric pump time, solar powered of course, yes I could use solar panels, batteries etc to paower a 12 volt pump, but these as just so much more fasinating... :o)

Engine is well-made. However video does not show water flowing through cooling jacket. It looks like lower water valve is closed. It would make sense to use power from generator to pump cooling water. Also no good view of power piston.
It seems you never reply to comments?

hi may be if u use the warmed water for ur personal hotwatersupply (shower etc.) u can use the heat twice
so u just install a tank for hot water above the coolingunit and the water will cirkulate itself (hot water up cool water down) if the "wasteheat" of ur stirling is enough

As always I love your innovation!

Drydoc2 2 years ago
in order to be at its most efficient it needs to track the sun and move.
the power can be put into 12 batteries such as deep cycle car batteries and put though an inverter and converted to AC when needed.
weetsie 2 years ago
Yes it can be stored :)

Thanks Sujoy

Your on the right track using mirrors. Mirrors last longer than fresnel lenses.
Also, I suggest that you paint the collector on the stirling engine with heat proof black paint.

I am constantly hearing about "new energy sources" to replace oil, but when I ask for specifics, there are just glazed looks and mumbling.
jpro57 2 years ago
Their is no one answer to that question. We're going to have to use a lot of different technologies such as wind, solar, hydro-electric, geo-thermal, etc and accept one very cold, hard fact. We are also going to have to learn to live with less energy. That is where its going to bite. Kiss cars goodbye for example. This nation in particular (the US) bet on an incredibly energy inefficient lifestyle and that will come to an end like it or not.
colddrake80 2 years ago
I am an engineer & love this stuff! You are building a future! BUT WTF! "kiss cars good bye" WOW you guys are out there! I bet your pushin for $10gl Dino fuel (old solar) too! Energy makes the world go round! Why not focus on a "no carbon car" I heard that the cars of today are 90% less carbon emissions than the 70s. Sounds like we are going the right way! You guys think green but make your selves look like you need a religion or somting? Clean is good! Green is blue!!
Dan like ur VID
smurf06960 2 years ago
No, $10 per gallon would a disaster for this country. We aren't even close to being able to deal with a price spike like that.
Also it isn't just about carbon emissions its about availability of the fuel period.
As for your job I don't care. Their is no call for making comments like we need to find "a religion or something".

Sadly, as in the case of other Stirling engines; when you ask for a real engine that does real work, all you can hear is the chirping of crickets.

SoulStay 2 years ago
It seems to me you ought to be able to make a lower tech system that is simpler to operate.
1/ go for a lower temperature difference - I understand you can tailor the Stirling engine size & shape to suit each purpose.
2/ use half or 1/3 cylinder shaped mirror focussed on
3/ a hollow copper cylinder FIXED to parallel with Earth's axis of rotation. Heat source for the engine is at upper end of this cylinder.
4/ only the mirror moves - by clockwork

Scale is the issue with these things! It's GREAT that you got it to work, but scaling it up to a usable, productive level is where you're going to run into issues. You aren't the FIRST to propose this, and nor will you be the last.
red33410 2 years ago
Absolutely fantastic! An excellent prototype for small-scale future power that can be produced with more readily available materials (metal vs silicon)!
I see you have a 56 inch dish, and it produces 15 watts... perhaps with 2 cylinders it would produce greater and more even torque to drive the motor.
If you don't mind my asking, how much electric can be generated by a conventional solar panel of comparable size to this set up?

Hi,
You need a heliostat or just a timed motor. Check Ebay for telescope tripods, some can track. Or watch this video.
watch?v=C6_G4VJosG4
GREENPOWERSCIENCE 2 years ago
I device to follow the sun is fairly easy to make. Since it only has to move slowly, a small electric motor geared way way down is enough to do the moving.
The electrical circuit can be based on just two photodetectors on either side of a small vane. When the vane points straight at the sun, the two see the same light.
Do you have access to electronic parts?

Dan, I've seen a couple of stirling engines on youtube where the reciprocating piston has been attached to the flywheel of a rotary permanent magnet alternator on it. Steam pistons too. I'm wondering if there would be any point to using a reciprocating magnetic generator, like in the "shake flashlights" that were sold on tv a while ago. The whole apparatus would be one big piston moving back and forth, no mechanical change.
Also, love the fading in and out, makes you look magical and stuff.
RaspWillow 3 years ago
:-) Magic
I do not know if it would do more that power some small LEDs but it is a good idea. The design is tricky as is, I think it would be a tough task. Do you have the videos code so I can find them on Youtube. I have seen them too, just cannot find them. Thank you for the great message.
GREENPOWERSCIENCE 3 years ago
Yes, there is, they are more compact and lighter. The free piston engines designed to be very efficient and lightweight use these type of alternators. NASA has a bunch of information on these, and Sunpower and Infinia both make these type of engines. Check out mowerofdoom's videos...he has an engine with one...actually there are a number of videos with linear alternators.
