Saw this movie for the first time when I was 8 years old. This scene was the most badass scene I'd ever watched till that point. Still gives me chills when Conor says "There can be only one!" and that glass breaks
The series got to explore things a movie would never have time for. Are immortals the source of god myths, was the destruction of Pompeii the result of a head taken on holy ground, or if you take the quickening from too many good/bad guys (or a very old/powerful good/bad guy), do you become a good/bad guy yourself. And of course there were better sfx, which they played around with as well. I consider the series seperate, the same as the movie sequels that should never be named.
"The Prize" is the knowledge, skills and power of every immortal that has ever lived, allowing the winner to lead mankind either into an age of prosperity or an age of darkness, its also speculated that it allows the winner to become mortal and bare children. One thing that is in debate is that the prize, like that of any tournament can be claimed by another. As to how long the roatation is between "Games" is unknown, we do know that immortals have been amost us from the start...
For me Connor is the real winer too! Duncan should die at the end of the series to give logic. I realy like the highlander story but was ruined with the changes already in highlander 2. Connor should be always the last immortal. (by the way sorry for my english =P)
@mastermultitasker i suport your comment, beside is the best film of the franchise the other movies just screw all the story. The series is good but the producers should make it previous to the events of the film.
The prize was summed up as gaining all the knowledge in the world. This would allow you to bring the world to peace or to its knees. Then there was gaining mortality and the ability to have children.
@GeneralMontague bit of a late reply on your comment, but i'd have to agree. After this one the others just made no sense. it was like the previous movie didn't really happen. in this one they didn't know why they were immortal, but in the 2nd, in the "future", they're from a worn torn distant planet, and banishment to earth makes them immortal and after winning the prize they can choose to go back to, Zies was it? then the 3rd was back in reg time and Conner wasn't the last immortal. wtf
One of my all time favorite movies! I don't know if it's the Scottish in me or what, but so am in tune with this movie! BTW Chris Lambert was great in the movies, but Adrian Paul wins the prize in the t.v. series!
If they had set the Highlander TV series in the early 80s instead of the 90s, and ignored all of the other Highlander movies, it would all have made a lot more sense.
Days ago I went to Best Buy and I bought the Blu-Ray version and I was dissapointed. They enhanced the quality of some scene, but not the entire movie. The final scene of the price was the worst, you could see without effort the wires and the crane that holds him in the air. With today technology it could be remastered to not be seen on the screen. Well thats my thought, and don't misunderstand me, I love this story!
@ganonpr I noticed that same thing with my Highlander DVD. One of the more noteworthy non-upconverted scenes was that part when Connor flashed back to the scene when he's in a boat with Ramirez.
It is weak, but they kind of explain in Highlander 3 when Conner talks about not understanding how there are other Immortals, because he was sure the Prize was his. Highlander 2 was written off as not possible by the fourth movie, Endgame. The Source was meant to be the first of a Trilogy, but sucked so much that they never did anything more with it, at least not yet.
So, best I can figure is this (with the understanding that there are some flaws in continuity): Highlander the TV series exists with and around Highlander, and Highlander 3. The TV series ends, and Highlander 4 takes place. Since Duncan kills Connor in this movie, Highlander 2 cannot take place. Highlander: The Source is possible continuity-wise (unfortunately), and is the last we know of the story so far.
Highlander cannot exist in the same continuity as the TV series or any of the other movies, because Connor MacLeod is quite clearly the last immortal left, and the winner of the Prize. There are no other immortals left. No Duncan, no Kane, no Kell...nothing and nobody. He is the winner.
@CPhillips92 Yes, it's easiest to accept the "alternate universe theory." As I said, there are going to be holes in continuity with what I suggested. I suppose you could take Highlander and Highlander 2 in one universe. Or, you could say Highlander 2 could not have been, and the Kurgan's Quickening just happened to be incredibly powerful and made Connor think it was the prize. Either way, it requires one to dismiss certain aspects of the story.
In an 1992 interview before the series began The producers said that Duncan's adventures took place in an alternate universe. Thus the Connor who appears with Duncan in the role of mentor is part of that alternate universe . So he is not the Connor of the first movie.
Highlander continuity is screwed lol. Mostly because they had no idea in the first film that there'd be so many sequels. Usually the Kurgan-Connor fight is retconned to just being a normal fight with a really big quickening...it's even mentioned in the series. But you do have to ignore some stuff in the movie to do that.
Most of us do pretend 2 and 3 don't exist...2 stank, big time. So did The Source. But the series was awesome.
The story afterwards made no sense to considering there can be only one. Why do other immortals exist if Conner won the "Prize" I mean shouldn't every immortal before 1985 be dead it doesn't make sense continuity problems. How can you possibly make a sequel if Conner won the "Prize" unless Immortals just started coming out of no where after 1985 every other Highlander should technically be "before" this movie or after I'm not sure I'm getting a headache just
@Deeman92788 If I had to explain it, Immortals who exist after Connor winnng The Prize probably came into existence after experiencing their first deaths. However, that doesn't explain the villain from Highlander 3. Okay, now _my_ head hurts. Maybe we should just act like there was only one Highlander film and whenever someone claims otherwise, we plug our ears and say "LA LA LA LA LA! I'M NOT LISTENING!"
@sabre926: This is also why winning the prize becomes so important...if you are the only immortal left then you have consumed all the souls of the other immortals and now have all of the knowledge of the universe...Jedi like even...
Man, I like this Quickening! As a kid, I always liked the Quickening scenes because they looked so cool but they don't fully explain what it is or what it does to the Immortal. They say it's a symbol of victory, but nothing more and I've often wondered if there was more to it than that.
@sabre926: They actually do explain what the Quickening does to an immortal. Besides it acting as a symbol of victory, the Quickening is when one immortal receives the powers and knowledge of the immortal he just killed. Essentially when you cut the head off of an immortal you gain their soul...This is also explained, subtly, in the sequel. Since Connor had won the prize he was no longer immortal, so in the second one he had to cut an immortals head off to become immortal again...
Ohhh, now I understand. Kind of like Mega Man, when you defeat one of Wily's robots, you inherit their powers. Did they ever show Connor or Duncan using another Immortal's abilities after the Immortal was beheaded?
@sabre926: If you watch "Highlander: Endgame" there is a scene where Duncan and Connor fight each other. Connor explains to Duncan that neither one of them can beat Jacob Kell alone, and that one of them must take the other's head to defeat him. End result is Connor sacrifices himself for Duncan, and after Duncan has absorbed Connor's spirit he is then able to face, fight, and defeat Jacob Kell for the prize.
@sabre926: At the end of Endgame there is a moment when Duncan sounds, and looks, like Connor, which allows Duncan to get the upper hand against Jacob Kell and allows him to win the prize. Other than that this scene is the best descriptor, as Connor is receiving the prize he screams he knows everything and is everything...Which indicates that he has won the prize and now has all of the knowledge of immortals previous...
I love this movie but the biggest WTF moment isn't when he received the prize, but the fact that Lambert a french actor is playing a Scotsman while Connery a Scottish actor is playing a Spanish......excuse me Egyptian character. I am not against it but it should still be regarded as wtf.
@Shanethefilmmaker Well, the point with the accents (if you notice, Connor's accent is different in the present from the 1500s) is that these people have literally been all over the world. They aren't going to sound like they're from anyone place, but a mash up.
Personally, i watched a small amount of 2 and decided to stop. I felt then as now that 1 was complete and all the rest was the same ole greed based rehash and tarnishing of the beauty of the original. Lol, i remember all the critics of the day slamming it. Went to see it at a dollar flick and ended up watching 3-4 times. Came back with friends another day. One of my top 10 favs, along with blade runner.
@The1stDukeDroklar though its highly explainable, not the plot I mean but what they tried to do to extend the series, they did the samething with DB when they made DBZ, before DBZ Piccolo was a demon and the dragon balls were a mystical rare item, in DBZ they changed it from a mystical artifact to advanced alien technology. Let's just say 2 is hollywoods poorest attempt at DBZing highlander. By making immortals rather than slain humans, but aliens.
I only hate Duncan because he apparently exists in the same universe as Connor. If he and Connor were in alternate storylines and never met I could appreticate Duncan.
@CPhillips92, I've been saying the same thing for years. Absolutely true. The original movie was self-contained, and much better than the later "sequels" that were, at best, "batshit garbage."
Having watched this (and other Quickenings) I think I have found of from where Dragon Ball Z got the inspiration for the transformations/power increases.
No, seriously. Lightning, screaming/yelling and power increases.
Just because somebody says it's canon doesn't make it so. If I wrote a sequel to the bible in which it turned out that Jesus was actually an agent of satan all along pretending to be the messiah, it wouldn't now be "canon".
MacLeod wins the Prize at the end of Highlander. It's in the script, it's in the film. You can't just undo that by fiat. All you can do is create a new continuity separate from the original one.
I think you're getting confused. The sequels ARE retcons. As such, they can be safely ignored.
If I bought the rights to Citizen Kane and created a sequel to it in which I asserted that Kane was an android who was reactivated to fight off a Martian invasion, that doesn't mean that Kane WAS in fact always an android. It means that I'm an idiot who was able to secure some legal rights and attempt cultural vandalism. The original is unaffected by my idiocy.
And, I mean, it is almost universal to reject Highlander 2 as being non-canonical. Why? Because it's batshit insane garbage. That proves that under certain conditions, sequels can be rejected as non-canonical, if they fail to meet a certain standard of consistency. Highlander 3 might not be total lunacy like Highlander 2, but it's still blatantly inconsistent.
Highlander is a stand-alone story. It doesn't have any scope for any valid sequels. Sorry.
@CPhillips92 Dude if you hate Highlander 2, go watch Highlander the Source. No, don't do that, it might kill you. Go watch Spoony's review of Highlander the source. At least then you'll get some entertainment from it. xD
But that aside, I know what you're doing. Trying to maintain the dignity of the Highlander movie is a noble cause. I'm too young to have seen it and I only know of it from my science teacher and watching reviews of the horrible sequels. And from what I can gather, it's
@CPhillips92 it's definitely going on my "old movies i must watch" list. However, Highlander as a franchise cannot be salvaged. The sequels exist. That can't be altered.
Well, as I say, Highlander 2 is universally ignored: it's treated as though it never happened.
The "franchise" is entirely pointless imo, except as a video game (a superb one could be made easily, but all they keep bringing out is garbage) or as a reboot.
@CPhillips92 The difference here is that, had you written the original Bible, you're addition would be valid.
If you were the one who wrote Highlander, then you would get to decide what canon for the show is. You're not. The writers decide what canon is and they added more to the story. You don't personally have to acknowledge the sequels...but the fact remains that they exist, and they are canon.
1. Unfortunately for your argument, Greg Widen, who wrote "Highlander", did not write any of the sequels. This kills your argument stone dead.
2. Are you seriously suggesting that Highlander 2 is canon, and that all the immortals are aliens from the planet zeist? If you want to stick to an alternative form of your argument, which appears to be "whoever owns the licence to the IP gets to decide what is canon", then you have to accept the Zeist story. Do you?
btw your argument also fails on the grounds that the Bible has no single author and has had many people add new chapters over the ages. Who gets to say whether or not the Book of Mormon is canonical?
I watched them all - apart from "Raven"-series because there are NO FEMALE IMMORTALS!
I even talked myself into 'The Quickening' being alright and said, "well, at least 'Endgame' had Buce Payne". But the last part, "The Source" - man, one couldn't have made a more miserable movie!
The original Highlander was "a kind of magic" that cannot be reproduced ... \m/
Every thing the Franchise did after this movie contradicted this event. Even in the series Joe Dawson referenced Connor killing Kurgan. There can be only one? Not applicable to winning the prize evidently. Connor won it 3 times. Although I can't vouch for the second time because that was an absolute mess.
@FalconCrestlover73 THERE MAKING A REMAKE!!! :) i heard they were gonna make a remake but into a video game but that got canceled but i had no idea they were gonna remake the movie man thats awesome
Highlander is one of those films that cannot be made into a sequel like Watchmen because it's originally intended to be a stand alone story. The bad quality of the other sequels is proof of this.
It gives a symbolic meaning of "There can be only one".
Reread my comment or stop posting. I was simply comparing Highlander to Watchmen about how the story is complete and cannot be made into a sequel and any attempts to will fuck up the story just like the Highlander sequels/spin offs as history has shown.
@zonilo1 Unless there was a prequel, which I wanna see actually. I mean, wouldn't it be kinda interesting to know what happened to Connor during those years we never saw? Like that flash back to when he was in a duel and couldn't die? How about that?
I agree the original is a stand alone film, however I think it was short sighted of them. The original film presented so many amazing elements that really deserved to be expanded on.
I also feel the films, starting with the 3rd film, were really pretty good. Well written, well filmed, and over all a great story line.
The original Highlander will always be a classic, Even if the Reboot/ Reimage/ Remake is good I don't see how it could ever top it. You can never top an original movie because it simply is just that THE ORIGINAL MOVIE :)
The oirginal Highlander will always be a classic, Evem if the Reboot/ Reimage/ Remake is good I don't see how it could ever top it. You can never top and original movie because it simply is just that THE ORIGINAL MOVIE :)
"There can be only one." This applies to all the movies, anime, and the series that came out. Highlander fans can take solace in knowing this is the only true highlander movie.
I remember when I played "Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver" (the first Legacy of Kain game I played) and after Raziel kills one of his borthers, there power shoots out of them and hits Raziel and I was reminded of this scene.
God damn it. I need to embed this (or basically any scene) where McCleod says "THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!" and every single fucking video has embedding disabled by request.
He does, you know. He won the prize. In 1985. There was no Duncan around. Connor won. That was the end of the story. Sorry, but it's true. !!!! =) =) =) =) =) 0)
yeah in my mind this is like the only movie or canon that exists. because the rest were just never going to match up to the awesomeness that is the original.
In the original story yes I would agree. However the first TV series wasn't bad. It is the writers job to captivate us and tell stories. I enjoy that.

Shanethefilmmaker 11 months ago
@Shanethefilmmaker Well, the point with the accents (if you notice, Connor's accent is different in the present from the 1500s) is that these people have literally been all over the world. They aren't going to sound like they're from anyone place, but a mash up.
Salt0fTheEarth 11 months ago 2
@Salt0fTheEarth I get the point I am just counting it as a wtf in more surprise to people who watched this movie for the first time.
Shanethefilmmaker 11 months ago
I think the accent lent itself really well, and made him sound cool!

The1stDukeDroklar 11 months ago
@The1stDukeDroklar though its highly explainable, not the plot I mean but what they tried to do to extend the series, they did the samething with DB when they made DBZ, before DBZ Piccolo was a demon and the dragon balls were a mystical rare item, in DBZ they changed it from a mystical artifact to advanced alien technology. Let's just say 2 is hollywoods poorest attempt at DBZing highlander. By making immortals rather than slain humans, but aliens.
Shanethefilmmaker 11 months ago
I only hate Duncan because he apparently exists in the same universe as Connor. If he and Connor were in alternate storylines and never met I could appreticate Duncan.

@CPhillips92, I've been saying the same thing for years. Absolutely true. The original movie was self-contained, and much better than the later "sequels" that were, at best, "batshit garbage."
BurningDiesel85 1 year ago
Having watched this (and other Quickenings) I think I have found of from where Dragon Ball Z got the inspiration for the transformations/power increases.
No, seriously. Lightning, screaming/yelling and power increases.
drago939393 1 year ago
Although this is awesome, it's now canon that he didn't win the prize. The Kurgan just had a very powerful Quickening stored up.
mazrimtaim10 1 year ago
@mazrimtaim10
CPhillips92 1 year ago
@CPhillips92 Dude, as much as you may want to retcon the terrible sequels out of existence, they're not going to go away. just accept it.
NinjaxPrime 1 year ago
@NinjaxPrime
CPhillips92 1 year ago
@NinjaxPrime
Sorry.
CPhillips92 1 year ago
@CPhillips92 Dude if you hate Highlander 2, go watch Highlander the Source. No, don't do that, it might kill you. Go watch Spoony's review of Highlander the source. At least then you'll get some entertainment from it. xD
But that aside, I know what you're doing. Trying to maintain the dignity of the Highlander movie is a noble cause. I'm too young to have seen it and I only know of it from my science teacher and watching reviews of the horrible sequels. And from what I can gather, it's
NinjaxPrime 1 year ago
@CPhillips92 it's definitely going on my "old movies i must watch" list. However, Highlander as a franchise cannot be salvaged. The sequels exist. That can't be altered.
NinjaxPrime 1 year ago
@NinjaxPrime
Well, as I say, Highlander 2 is universally ignored: it's treated as though it never happened.
The "franchise" is entirely pointless imo, except as a video game (a superb one could be made easily, but all they keep bringing out is garbage) or as a reboot.
CPhillips92 1 year ago
@CPhillips92 The difference here is that, had you written the original Bible, you're addition would be valid.
If you were the one who wrote Highlander, then you would get to decide what canon for the show is. You're not. The writers decide what canon is and they added more to the story. You don't personally have to acknowledge the sequels...but the fact remains that they exist, and they are canon.
ZachSka87 1 year ago
@ZachSka87
Do you?
CPhillips92 1 year ago
@ZachSka87
btw your argument also fails on the grounds that the Bible has no single author and has had many people add new chapters over the ages. Who gets to say whether or not the Book of Mormon is canonical?
CPhillips92 1 year ago
Now he can return to Zeist, right?

Got this on Blu-Ray recently. So nicely remastered, and Directors Cut FTW!
I however will not be buying Highlander 2, 3, End Game, and The Source on DVD of Blu-Ray. Those can get stabbed, and decapitated by the Kurgan.
I will however buy the TV series on Blu-Ray. :D

Highlander is one of those films that cannot be made into a sequel like Watchmen because it's originally intended to be a stand alone story. The bad quality of the other sequels is proof of this.
It gives a symbolic meaning of "There can be only one".

@zonilo1 Yet there is no Watchmen sequel and a crapload of sequels and spin offs of this.... so your pretty much proved wrong there buddy.

Reread my comment or stop posting. I was simply comparing Highlander to Watchmen about how the story is complete and cannot be made into a sequel and any attempts to will fuck up the story just like the Highlander sequels/spin offs as history has shown.
zonilo1 7 months ago
@zonilo1 Unless there was a prequel, which I wanna see actually. I mean, wouldn't it be kinda interesting to know what happened to Connor during those years we never saw? Like that flash back to when he was in a duel and couldn't die? How about that?
AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO THINKS THIS IS A GOOD IDEA?

I agree the original is a stand alone film, however I think it was short sighted of them. The original film presented so many amazing elements that really deserved to be expanded on.
I also feel the films, starting with the 3rd film, were really pretty good. Well written, well filmed, and over all a great story line.
