Hmm, I'm doing this mission right now with a similar strategy, but using Sonja and going for the atoll with the airports before sneaking up on Hawke. Is that a bad idea?
I'm not good at Advance Wars in any way, but I assume that Hawke is considered balanced because his powers take so long to charge. Or maybe I'm just an idiot. This is equally possible.
Grit's problem is his indirect units have +1 range. This leads to the spammage of the artillery, a cheap unit that in large amounts DESTROYS the land forces, especially when Infantry are used to protect the artilleries from being attacked. And infantry are even cheaper than artillery. Max isn't broken by comparison since tanks are too expensive to spam.
That's Ephraim the other guy on YT that does/did AW videos he knows his stuff. (Far better than you I might add, no offense he just plans ahead much more than you do)
But i don't agree I think Grit is just fine, there are plenty of COs who are good against him and until AWDS he had nothing to speak of to protect his sea units from Air units, not to mention his abilities alienate Air units entirely.
I'm sure he does know his stuff. But that doesn't mean I care about why Grit's so broken. I said in the video not to explain why he was broken on pain of eternal ignoring, so there's no excuse.
The insult about my AW knowledge could probably have been left out of your comment, by the way.
I agree, I don't think Grit is really that broken either, but whenever I talk with "The AW Elite" or so they like to be called, they just go on and on about Grit being broken. I agree that he has some nice advantages, but for the most part I think they just don't know how to fight against him very well.
And like Malus said in his video, if anyone tries to explain why he is broken in response to my comment, I will also ignore you.
You mean use AA Tanks to kill the infantry meatwalls, right? People actually consider that as a common weakness of Sensei's boosted stuff, but it ultimately doesn't work out partly because AA Tanks are too expensive at being units incapable of piercing armor decently. And there aren't too many units capable of OHKing infantry, and those that can are still fairly limited about it.
Now, we gotta take out the cannon first... dammit!

Because the map is very long. And by the way, that's strike two on the 'You're an idiot' scale.

I put my yellow rocket unit there once.
It wasn't fun.

LOL at Hawke's random Mech/Lander. I've played this mission several times, and have never seen him do that...
