@Kekik79 Actually, I didn't know that this guy was a reknowned guy. But still can't understand why he gets recognition for this song. As it brings needles to my eardrums that he left out the E chord as I mentioned before. Plus, that he only strums downwards (which in my book, only people who can't actually play guitar do / OR when you're playing fastpaced music like rock) until about 2:53.
@Kekik79 He played an open tunning because he wasnt much of a player. You can bar simple 1 4 5 progresions and such but your limited to what you can play unless your like Micheal Hedges.
Ted Hawkins, a most overlooked soulful singer and musician of his time. I began listening to black music(ians) in the early 50's when it was not cool for a white kid to do so. I put Ted Hawkins in the top 10 of the best. I would have loved to have sat under a shade tree with Ted and sipped on a scotch and smoked a cigar, and stared off at the setting sun while Ted sang "Long As I Can See the Light." RIP, Ted. I am sure that God has you singing for him.
Major... so beautifully put together. One of my very favs. I spent many Sunday afternoons down on the Venice Boardwalk listening to Ted and was always moved by his life stories and his incredible voice. People would bring him things to eat and licorice tea for his throat as it became more hoarse as the day went on. I have collected his music and never tire of listening to it. I miss him... RIP
I love Ted Hawkins. My mate got me into them before he passed away last year this song has every hair on my body standing up on end. Good job majorsnag, good job.x
does anyone know where I can obtain the poster on 1.55
Yes, Ted Hawkins is proof of the gems that exist, if only we look (he was discovered singing on a street in some city by a record producer. After he cut the 1st album he then hit the road again, and disappeared for some time) I bet his simple life is (was?) filled with great experiences.
Yes, it's one of my favorites, as is the next hundred years. Ted Hawkins was a genuine artist who gave us such pure beauty that one wonders if perhaps there might be a higher power from which the human spirit gets its energy to overcome even the longest odds imaginable. Mr. Hawkins, may he rest in eternal peace and happiness, knew hardship. He got some fame before his time was up, but that probably didn't matter to him. He just wanted to share his love through music. And he does. Thanks Major.
Ted Hawkins is a fantastic singer, and what a great version he does of this great song. I never heard of him before, but thanks to YT, I have now and I love him. 5-star video.
ted hawkins is my grandfather, sorry to tell this to some people but he died new years day 1995(so he only lived a few seconds in 1995) ive only met him when i was a baby, he held me. i bet most of you guys wont belive me...but im not a guy to just tell fibs like that....especially publicallly. my father is ted hawkins the third and he is working on an album that will blow your mind! his music is on keyboard not on guitar though he likes to see all of you guys commenting nicely about him
If what you're saying is true, I can tell you for sure your grand daddy was a really cool down to earth yet spiritual man. You knew it when you heard it as I did many times in the 90s. He was a really nice guy too which made you like him that much more.
I was fortunate enough to see your grandfather once at The Bottom Line in Greenwich Village, NYC before he passed. I'll never forget. He is a true musical legend...his simple open-tuning guitar strumming, poignant voice that rivals Sam Cooke, humble stage presence, and life-experience making him incapable of being copied. There will always only be one Ted Hawkins.
@Dragonking3787 hi met your grandfarther ere in the uk years ago good man loved his voice was sorry to hear that he passed away but he will live on in his music

I saw Ted Live at the Hurricane in Kansas City maybe 15 years ago. Truly Fucking amazing. He signed autographs after the show and he signed a book I had called the '100 greatest albums of all time' some critic wrote 'Songs From Venice Beach' was like number 30. Anyway some people wanted him to write long dedications in the autograph they got. It became apparent Ted couldn't write much but his name. He was so gracious though and loved the adulation. Honestly, what an amazing singer.
In what Ted Hauwkins's album it finds this version please ? (sorry for my english)

Great singing, though the guitarplay could've been improved, and I'm missing the chord E where you phrase the "bring it on home".

I discovered Ted via Andy Kershaw's majestic compilation "More Great Moments in Vinyl History".
His performance of "Cold and Bitter Tears" shook me to my core.
I realised that I had just discovered a truly awesome unique talent.
I have just ordered 3 of Ted's albums via Amazon, I can't wait.
Spread the word!
Tell all your friends about this amazing talent.
You can't go far wrong by sending them this YouTube link of Ted covering "Bring it on Home to Me".
