Many plastic products have a shiny/glossy surface/finish. I take it this treatment will destroy the surface and make it matte. Does it affect the feel of the surface? I need to see some proof that this only affects the color and not the other material properties (physical surface texture), otherwise the value of the treatment is questionable if you're ruining the surface in return for getting it lighter color. There's a video here of doing this to SNES and the treated surface seems ruined.
I don't speak German, so maybe this was mentioned in the video, but I think 15% hydrogen peroxide was too strong. That seems to have caused the 'white bloom' on the SNES plastic.
Around 10% seems to be the recommended strength. I got 9% strength from a local pharmacy (chemists as we call them in Britain), which is commonly available. Another thing that can apparently cause the blooming is letting the paste dry out, if the treated plastic is left in sunlight. I seem to recall that using a UV lamp doesn't produce much heat, so this lessens the effect. Alternatively, keep reapplying the paste if using sunlight, particularly if it's a hot day.
@MarkTheMorose thinking of doing this to my jap dreamcast thats just starting to turn yellow :( can i just ask what did you buy from the pharmacy just want to find a way that is proven to work lol....
@froggydarren I bought two 200ml bottles of 9% strength Hydrogen Peroxide, which is close enough to the recommended 10-12% strength, without being too strong and causing bloom. I also got a tub of store own-brand stain-removing powder, the type you put in with clothes washing. Most any with 'Oxy-' in the name should do. The other main ingredient is a thickener; I tried cornflour in the absence of anything better, but it was difficult to work with, I'll try wallpaper paste next time.
I think you should enable CC
