Aslan appeared as and when needed, the sage like character with a warrior twist, more so a guardian of nature here than a ruler. I could give you a dozen well known examples of hero's that fight the good fight then move on, as they are no rulers but warriors, guardians or martyrs to the cause. As a writer, that is my honest interpretation, a warrior of nature :), the sort of character I had in one of my books for about two years till he died in battle, not sitting on a kings throne.
