the card in the spoke originate from the alleycat races. Originally, the messengers would have the card indicating their position in the race and would keep the card for bragging rights until the next race, it doesn't make for a better ride but people nowadays just put it in the spokes to make their ride look "cool".

it's difficult to say... it really depends on how much you skid it out. It's not something you do constantly unless you're an idiot. Vittoria Randonneurs are really good tyres though, they last a very long time comparatively!

SOMA makes a great tire for fixie riding, but do your self a favor and ad a front brake to your bike. A front break can provide 70% of your braking power, plus you don't want to have to depend on your legs to stop you. Also, don't get too hard of a gear, you don't want to kill your knees.

Depends on how you use it. Using your legs to brake can put stress on the knees, as can using the wrong ratio to climb a hill. Then again, the latter applies to geared bikes as well. Check out the fixed gear testimonials on Sheldon Brown's website for some commentry as to what's good and bad for the knees.

I used to ride brakeless until I got a ticket. cops in my town are strict. I know they raised the price of fix tickets to $25-30. thats the price of a decent brake (not special, but does the job).
