To fans of sonic who have only played 3d games/can't remember the times when less characters meant better games:

Shadow isn't in this game because Sega were trying to go back to their roots a bit more with this game, thank god because their last few games, sucked.

By not having shadow and the other hundred pointless characters like cream/big, they were actually able to concentrate on the gameplay this time instead of trying to make an over the top final fantasy story with glitchy gameplay.

I don't think any of the recent sonic games have are connected for stories like Sonic 06's may have come before Sonic Rush but I doubt it because she seemed like she knew sonic from before when silver said blue hedgehog

Apparently, SU happens directly after SA2, so that's probably the reason for his absence. Other than that, I guess SEGA wanted a break from him.

... It happens directly after Sonic Adventure 2? O_o I would have thought it happened after Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), technically Shadow the Hedgehog since that was the last game with no time lost.

Shadow and Knuckles weren't in this game because they had to be cut due to time constraints. You could never get enough of Shadow. :P

Yup, though they got rid of Knuckles becuse that would involve the Master Emerald. And Sonic fans will say "Why doesn't Sonic use the Master Emerald to restore the emeralds?" and then lots of explaining will occur.
