Did homosexuality make you a Communist? Jesus Christ - what a crass dickhead the interviewer is. Some of the posters here have caught the fever, I note: "Fags and spies for Russia" Nice. People are idealistic in their youth. These men were naive - nobody knew the reality of life under Communism (or, let's be honest here - Stalinism) - and when they realised how wrong they'd been they were in too deep to extricate themselves. A cautionary tale from 'another country'.
@aerialkate That's not exactly what the interviewer asked...he was suggesting that perhaps homosexual relationships could have been used as leverage to recruit Blunt. I'm against homosexuality for moral reasons, but I feel sorry for Blunt I think he acted according to his conscience as he says.
I remember at the time these revelations regarding Blunt's 'treasonous ' actions, were made public, the widespread public disgust at the Queens refusal to even dismiss the man from his lucrative position at the Palace, -far less let him get charged with anything criminal,( let sleeping dogs lie), just another example of class distinction, which still runs so deeply ingrained in UK society, like the writing on a stick of Blackpool rock.
I can quite understand where he was coming from...Blunt is actually acting with quite a bit of dignity under leadng and obnoxious questions by the interviewer...it has to be remembered that the full truth about soviet russia was not widely known until after the war and after Khruschev denounced Stalin and stalinism. Andre Gide did write about his experiences in russia in a negative way before but that was construed as sour grapes rather unfrotunately by the intellegenisa at the time.
Traitorous, lying, scheming bastard quite happy to take any honour until he was actually caught, Absolutely typical of the narrow upper class driven recruitment into MI5 that still continues today - endless amateur duffers that make UK intelligence service the laughing stock of the whole world. Blunt was disloyal, full of intellectual self justification and a hatred of his own country born of a left wing education.
You need to read Peter Wright book" Spycatcher" Blunt was involved behind scenes until he was interrogated By Wright and he point out was he "not use for rthe KGB after 1945....but he protected and did say at to a point he had feelings for previous spies,Burgess and Mclean.......eventually, he felt felt bad betraying them, after he got a special inmunity.
Now this, this is the way to lead an interview. The superbly collected interviewer neither shying away from, nor relishing his necessary terms of inquiry: "you are a traitor," "you have homosexual leanings." To the vanquished Blunt, a chance to rise from the ashes. Bravo!

I wish things could transport me there; I would put the bullet in his head via the left ear. Fags and spies for Russia. Reminds me of Barney Franks.
