This is also a joke about the annual European Song Contest, formerly known as "Grand Prix Eurovision de la Chanson Européenne" (before they anglicized it). It was usual that the presenters did their presentation in the language of the hosting country (if not English or French) and in English and French. Europeans might remember that this made the presentation pretty boring, an taking thrice as long because it had be done in two to three languages.

185 thumbs up for repeating 2 words from the clip!? and 89 thumbs up for repeating the guy who repeated two thumbs up from the clip!? GEEZUS ppl...come on!
Thank you Helen Mirren: the word is pronounced "pre-stij-us" not "pre-steej-us." Finally, someone gets it. Also the word clique is pronounced: KLEEK not KLICK.
I seriously LOVE Hugh Laurie and Helen Mirren. Terrific actors and wonderfully funny here. I don't know if Hugh Laurie can really speak any French, though based on the way he is speaking you get the idea he doesn't really speak French. What I love even more is that Helen Mirren is actually fluent in French. (One press conference post an awards show she answered a question in fluent French. AWESOME! You think she can't seem hotter than she already is, but you're wrong!)
@Agnouchka29 Why not? :-P But really, Laurie is known for being a comedian in Britain and that's how he got his start as an actor, so he probably wanted to share this lighter side of him.
I think Hugh translated correctly .. the "poof..cinq" part wasn't that he COULDN'T translate, it was just for comedic effect.. and it worked because it was hilarious!
this reminds me of when I saw some late night show host guy commenting you can never go wrong having a British actor as a guest; somehow all of them know how to work an audience. seriously, it like part of their training or something
So, thank you Britain. Thanks for Shakespeare, Milton, Adam Smith, Simon de Montfort, Blackstone (what is US law if not English Common Law?), Pope, Boyle, Newton, and countless other scientists, artists, and statesmen who illuminated the human condition. And thanks to Washington, Jefferson, Adams, and the other American Founding Fathers. In waging a war against Britain, they showed what it truly means to be British --- to love freedom and the work of one's hands.
As his American accent, his french accent is very, very good....with good pronounciation at the right moment. French is not an easy language for anglo-saxons...
@doggie101171 Don't even get me start....I've studied English, German & Spanish in college, got very good grades...but failed one of my french course (litterature) and...I'M FRENCH... Go figure...
I am quite aware of that. I was responding to a comment about a French guy failing his French lit. class and how he thought that was ironic. my comment has nothing at all to do with Hugh and neither did the comment I responded to.
@Orinturify : Do you speak French? Because it's really funny as he didn't know the french word for winnowing he just said it but with a French accent. And then he translated a whole phrase ("literally hundreds... to meager list of just five") into just "poof, cinq". Otherwise, his French is superb. I simply adore Hugh Laurie!
"Hugh Laurie at the 2006 Emmys" ??? Et Helen Mirren ???????? C'est du pâté pour chien ??? Je vais essayer de vérifier si on trouve cette vidéo sur le site quand on tape dans la ligne de recherche le nom de la grande actrice britannique. Sinon, il faudrait re-taguer ça un peu mieux !!!
@Rachiejane1 lmao...just bc my profile says US doesnt mean im from there...i could've made my profile in america...and i did not say that America is everything i said. "It's basically everything now." oh and are you really from Britian?
I see your point but, America is a hybrid of nationalities and culture - Native American, British, Italian, German, Irish, Norwegian, Spanish, French, Indian, African, Polish and so on.
LOL: Let's put it this way: America is like Michael Jackson and Europe is like Joe Jackson.
Maybe you didn't want him but, you always had him there to bail you out in times of trouble and, you sure as hell haven't done too badly by him financially.
@wheresmyfroggy24 American identity is unique and precious because we DID have to fight for it but... British culture and its timeless emphasis on the right to self-determination made the idea of America possible. It could be argued that colonial Americans were better Englishmen than the ruling classes of Britain at the time --- Thomas Jefferson used to claim that Americans were really displaced Saxons who chose to leave Britain and the Norman yoke.
"I know ask Mr Laurie to read the nominations for outstandning lead actor in a mini series or movie, properly." Yes....? It sounds like he says something more after that... xD
Yea, I must admit, very good French! :-D When she says "has the difficult task" he translates by "a la tâche presque impossible" (task almost impossible) which is a little bit exagerated.^^
At least at the end he's able to translate five into cinq: better than nothing! :-p
It really annoys me that when a lot of people present an award like that they say it all very quickly "And the Emmy goes to xxx xxx" I mean, it's not fun if they drag it out, but can't they at least make a bit of an effort D:
No, I mean the person giving the speech at the end. I know perfectly well who Helen is, and i DID write 'actor', which I'm pretty sure she's not, Audrey, which is a male- name, and as far as I'm conserned, she didn't say 'um' once, now did she?
(Although on the 'actor' thing, although I don't do it myself, I think quite a few people try to use 'actor' as a gender-neutral term and refer to everyone as such. )
Perhaps... But I think that's more common in case you don't know the gender, or suchlike. Like, you generally ask what's the name of the 'actor' in that and that movie, but you say she is an 'actress'. Not that I'm sure... XD
I don't doubt that for a second... I just think you're getting beyond the actual point of this conversation. Yes, I am aware it might have made a slightly bad argument to say that upon seeing that word, everything should be cleared. It's the way most people I know view it, however, though as I live in Norway I guess that's not really saying much is it? Please, just let it go, will you?
could someone write a translation of what hugh says in french? i dont speak french.. but im guessing he's not 'really' translating helen's words is he? what's the joke?
I was just trying to explain to someone that he was using the correct translations as they thought he was making up silly translations and that's why the audience was laughing.
LMAO "Poof! Cinq!"

All about the time and place, dear. All about the time and place. Besides, she/he/it got the point, didn't she/he/it?
LonelyFear 2 years ago
I'm talking about denotation, not connotation.

I only typed two sentences. It's not like I patronized you by calling you "dear".

sorry... XD it's an old habit....

@LonelyFear
Best to just "let it go"....life is too short to drag things up, months later.
I take your point about "Audrey" being a MALE name, as well.
Remember that bloke Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast ar Tiffanys, though he seemed a bit "Gay" to me with his flimsy, fancy dresses but eh.......:)

could someone write a translation of what hugh says in french? i dont speak french.. but im guessing he's not 'really' translating helen's words is he? what's the joke?
electricchick 2 years ago
he translates every word that she says
Ingengerion 2 years ago 8
No, he is actually translating it.
The joke is - Why is he translating? They are in America.
And also, Helen Mirren is supposed to be getting irritating and makes it harder for him to translate by using harder words.

It's comedy... The clue is in the audience laughing...
waviedavie1967 2 years ago 7
Yeah.. I know. I find it funny.. :/
I was just trying to explain to someone that he was using the correct translations as they thought he was making up silly translations and that's why the audience was laughing.

Yeah, I know... I was just reinforcing what you'd said :-)
waviedavie1967 2 years ago 2
Good, thanks. Was a bit worried that you thought I had no sense of humour. Teehee. xD
Blacknarcissa 2 years ago 2
No, just total dismay that the Americans don't ;-)
