you can become Russian, British, Italian, Chinese, Thai etc....but you can`t become Japanese. Becoming Japanese in the "cultural sense" as you say, would only make you seem silly. Acting Japanese is not natural for a gaijin...
I wonder what kind of western people would want to stay in japan for more than 5- 10 - 20 years!!
I could never continue to live like this ! being different everywhere you go and constantly being spoken to in english by japanese people even when you attempt japanese Is verrry annoying to someone like me. maybe some people think its nice that japanese try to speak english but for someone whos intention is not a vacation, it starts to get old. I will be here till I graduate then go to Spain! yay!
I'm soon going to move to Japan to live there with my wife, and I kind of can understand ur point of view. But for me, my choice to spend my entire life in Japan it's his specificity compare to western country. I don't think all country have to became messed up and internationalized like european country, and I and most of the japanese, (actually all...), I know really hope it will not change. I'm really ok to be treated as a "gaijin" for the rest of time there. It's just the way it is.
you cannot become Japanese....to be Japanese, you have to be born with Japanese blood (ie native Japanese Islander blood) in you. Your genes have to have true Japanese DNA, from the true Japanese race. End of story yo.....
@madman3247 Yup, to become a Japanese native is impossible. You need Japanese blood. But becoming Japanese in the cultural sense is not impossible, I think.
I agree with animalkindness. (even though atm I live in the US) The way they stated it hit the nail on the head (hard). I think people that go into another country and expect to be thought as "one" and not a foreigner right away is plain idiotic. I have nothing against people like that. I just don't see why they would want to give up who they are (American, European, Australian, African, etc.) to be something else. Are they not proud of who they are and where they came from?
The reason why I came to japan is because I feel like Im actualy somebody because Im diferent.thats the thing when Im elsewhere like in the USA, I just feel like another worthless mutt, nothing special, but in japan everyone gets suprised for the first time if you meet them & you speak japanese, your like an idol,& they act cool with you you. everywhere you go you can make your own entrance.its either live like a star in japan or live like a nobody in the US.I choose the Star while Im still young
I've never felt more sorry (and embarassed) for another human being than I am right now for you. You sound like someone who's too young to comprehend the concept of self worth/value. It's painfully obvious that you're living a very superficial and trivial life with a case of megalomania. There are plenty of foreigners who can speak fluent Japanese who come to Japan with a higher purpose than you'll ever realize existed. You are just the type of gaijin who's polluting my beloved country..
@animalkindness ROFL!!!! You learned to speak Japanese just to impress the natives? Personally, I could care less what native Japanese think of me learning their language. They all tell me it's too difficult for me. I have my own personal goals to meet, and don't have the time nor the interest in being a "rock star." So what are you going to do when you get old?
@untmdsprt I didnt learn japanese to impress natives, what kind of assumption is that your making whered you get that from? I learned japanese so I can obviously live around the country , I also learned japanese so I can study fashion in japan, and Guess what, Im studying fashion in college in japan right now. but in the big picture I never think Id want to live in japan all my life.
@animalkindness Weren't you the one who said you wanted to live like a rock star in Japan? And I agree with you, I'm sick and tired of these people wanting to practice their English with me when I start off in Japanese. This is Japan, speak Japanese until someone asks you if you can speak English. Tourists should get out their phrase book and attempt to speak the local language.
were i live in the uk the only culture around here is setting a car on fire every week end lol dm chavs'neds always reacking the carpark outside my house haha i want to go to japan for a year maybe more if i like it after uni (still got 3 years 14 weeks to go lol)
I come from New Zealand and we are a country of two cultures, and a large percentage of our country is foreigners, we manage to keep our culture intact, but I guess our culture isn't as strong, but then I think that, but when I'm at uni (its only got like 15% NZers, 50% japanese and the rest other cultures), I really notice our culture...dunno my point in what i was writing, im away with the fairies~~
@MCRLolitaDoll Yea, I have noticed things about the UK and cultural values I have picked up from being raised there much more since I came to Japan than when I lived in the UK. Sometimes things are blind to you until you experience the differences.
Extremely well formed thoughts and I think you make some very excellent points. I haven't been in Japan as long as you have but through my studies and attempt to immerse myself in Tokyo society and everyday life, I feel that you're on to something that a lot of people share and probably can agree with you at least on some level. Personally, I think that write of passage bit is especially relevant and true. I still feel it sometimes, but I accept it and recognize it for what it is.
@ladylaurajones Thanks for your comment! It's tricky to brush it off sometimes, but I definitely think that it gets easier as time goes on! Keep up your studies :)
Japan willbe oepn after they accept Trans Pacific Partnership .but at the same time Japan will be Americanized .

@madman3247 There are multiple indigenous groups of Japanese. Modern day Japanese, like most of the world, have mixed genetic heritage, yo.

Hi, Gakuranman. I am Bruceino.
You hit a great point that internationalization could mean both ways.
I fantacise that Japanese people will open up as if they are all Japanese Americans.
But then, they will not be the Japanese as we know them now and it will be sad.
This dilemma or irony is hitting not only Japan but all other Asian countries; Japan may be leading at it, though.
