My father read me this book when I was eight and I absolutely loved it. So I find the movie a little disappointing. Also the person playing Adrian Fromsett doesn't act.
one my favorite film noirs...I like the way it was filmed...Lila Leeds (the blonde sec)..had a very interesting bio..check it out...too bad she didn't have more roles
Gaspar Noe got the idea for "Enter the Void" from watching this under the influence of mushrooms. If you like the POV thing, you need to see that film. Also, anyone remember the great POV shots from Kathryn Bigelow's "Strange Days"? LOVED that film.
i just read this book,by raymond chandler "lady in the lake". i just wanna say it left me speechless.i loved this masterpiece, just so great and..awesome!
I like the receptionist,Lila Leeds. Too bad she wasnt in more movies. Dona Drake
who Bob Hope had to "settle for" in Road to Morocco and Andrea King should have had more prominent roles. I wonder if the leading ladies of the day prevented them being in more movies to avoid sharing the glamor spotlight
The Receptionist is Lila Leeds, too bad she didnt have more roles. There were lots more real beauties like Dona Drake(Road to Morocco),and Andrea King(Ride the pink horse) who I wish had been in lots more movies.
Reason why this subjective camera is emotionally unfavorable is because the audience does not have access to the "POV actor's" reactions. Though it may be fun and interesting in the beginning, it will tend to get boring later on. (I'm quoting joseph mascelli). I think this film is fun and I admire the master shots it took to film with such precision and no editing. However, I think subjective camera should be minimal and added for effect, i. e person wakes up from coma, looks up to doctor.
bay city was supposed to be santa monica city, though idk if SM truly was corrupt or not. but, as chandler wrote in 'farewell my lovely,' it was easier to buy up most/all of a small city like bay city, than a bigger one like los angeles
in chandler's book, bay city was corrupt, w/ political offices & the police dept being for sale. any wealthy ppl, including big mob bosses could buy any position & anybody
I'm watching this movie now for the first time.. enjoying the 'first person' view.. but at first I thought he had died..lol.. since that form of viewing has been used in some paranormal movies from the ghost's 'point of view'.
This first person view is so brilliant and clever for 1947, why haven't many modern films followed this? I know some films have short views of First person, but why not have it entirly though a film.
@Daltonson Do you know "enter the void"? from the director Gaspard Noé. The first half of the movie is a first person view of the principal character... who is taking drugs. I really enjoyed this movie. Maybe you will?
Our generation is used to POV (mainly for fps video games ;) That's why we enjoy this kind of treatment on a movie. But peolpe back then didn't enjoy it too much, it was weird, extrange and unconventional... and people tends to avoid what they don't know... it's a shame...
P.S: sorry my bad englsh, talking spanish here n_n
@jacytoon Riiiight! I was thinking of "Compulsion"... which is also not by Hitchcock, but Richard Fleischer (1959) but which has the same Loeb-Leopold storyline as his "Rope", which I was thinking of, that used the no-edit technique... which Hitch thought failed as a technique.
firstly, it's available for rental on netflix, and secondly, i would recommend you play 'half-life', and/or 'deus ex: the conspiracy' before playing bioshock, as it rips off both titles pretty heavily.

When Gaspar Noe was tripping on Magic Mushrooms and watched this, he decided to film "Enter the Void" In first person also. Brilliant.

@iceland69able I'm sure that has a lot to do with her pot bust with Robert Mitchum. Didn't hurt his career though.... :-p

@Daltonson Sarah Kane tried to fund such a film in the 90s, but it didnt wok out. it should have been a short film on eating disorders.

Hitchcock's "Obsession" is worth a look, in this same experimental POV genre.
And The Firesign Theatre's "Nick Danger" was born here.
