These artists knew how to play, the result of a lifetime of discipline cultivating god-given innate talent. The same can't be said of much that passes for music today.
you can lead a horticulture but you can't make her think. We hipcats know that the bass player has more talent and has worked harder than 99% of all recent pop stars; but you can't make anyone feel something, love someone. news flash! in the USA almost no one listens to jazz. I do. You do. One thing for sure, they paid heavy to tell their story. Is it song? Is it art? Isn't it the same thing? RIP Abbey, Max
You know, being an 18 year old musician, I can say not many people appreciate jazz because a lot of music today takes a lot from it. There's really a lot of beauty and grace and melody behinds this genre aside from just being "elevator music".
@vrdrums In America, jazz is taken for granted precisely because it is so ubiquitous and it is usually heard as 'elevator music' here, as you said. In other parts of the world, especially in Europe and in Japan, jazz has a much more prestigious reputation and is really appreciated--it's seen as a successor to European symphonic music, and definitely as America's biggest musical contribution to the world.
just FYI to you older gen. jazz fans. plenty of young people have an appreciation for jazz music, in fact i would say its almost the same percentage of older people who like jazz. how many older people dont know anything about jazz? some people like pop music, some people like other stuff, but all intellectual and sophisticated music lovers give it all up for jazz... much love
Jazz and Classical music are in terrible times since many of the stations are being kicked off the public airwaves. To find jazz and classical music you need to turn to pay station such as Sirius and XM to get your first taste.
You almost need fate to direct you to the channels.
You know if you listen to this and then listen to a lot of the progressive technical and meldodic deathcore music you can see that the drums and the guitar are heavily influenced by jazz as well as classical music but still so many people call it mindless and talentless garbage it's sad to me rly :/
An Icon of music true, but even more relevant a CHAMPION OF EQUALITY and CIVIL RIGHTS for All. The passing of sister Abbey should make us all remember one day all who fought for "Freedom Day" will be physically gone, but WE must keep the spirit alive in all the Future generations. Sing sweetly in the ether, my sister, thank you for your contributions to society, the arts and the spirit of mankind. Peace
While I agree that forward thinking people should always embrace and immerse themselves in the current artistic expression. However, I think it disingenuous to count it hypocritical of folks who criticize any form of expression, you can not expect a totality of agreeability on either side.
That being said, I think it's a bit hypocritical of so many jazz fans to be commenting on this generation's ignorance towards jazz if they are always turning it against rap music. If jazz fans have no capacity for the appreciation of the new music and no desire to explore or immerse themselves with the music, its history and its culture, why should they expect younger rap fans to open up to this music? Surely both genres have their classic artists and albums that are worth exploring.
@kirksiesz I couldn't agree more my friend. I love jazz, don't get me wrong. But jazz is only another form of music, inspired by another form. Jazz is all about creating something new. Why not love something that was essentially derived from jazz. If one is to only listen to the "true" form of the music, then we should only listen to spirituals.. Essentially everything musically is loosely based off of spritiuals.... sorry for my speil, but long story short, i agree! :)
I haven't found many jazz lover's dismissing all rap, whereas you can't get the average hip-hop junkie to give a passing listen to any true classics. Hypocritical? I think not. It's the younger generations now that are more closed off from new experiences than ever before. It's frightening how brief most think the expiration date is on works of art.
There's plenty of older rap I like, and tons of jazz I don't listen to. But please, let's Not make this an old vs. new thing.
@kirksiesz, very true. When Jazz was the scrappy newer kid on the block some older generations decried it for not being European classical or religious music. When Louis Armstrong was playing his trumpet as a kid jazz was the music of the underclass and the "undesirables". Now I have a prejudice against some rap music that is "crap" to me but I do have a very open ear for the good stuff, some of which will be timeless like the best music of all types.
Only de stiff-necks don't like rap music . . . and i think you'll find if you look at any of the true masters of jazz such as the above players - i think you'll find they is not , excuse the expression, Stiff-Necks
YO THUMB THIS UP IF YOU FEEL ME PEOPLE. STIFF-NECKS DOWN.
@bopkick5 learn to speak in complete sentences using a vocabulary that is smiled upon by Webster. Please, if you want to make a point I think you'll find it much easier to do using proper English.
@Thatmemphiskid ur so special and unique. lol i dont know why people always say their age, nobody cares, how sophisticated or cultured you think you are.
However, I feel that those who criticize new music criticize it not because it's not good music, but because it has drifted away from truly pure music. Music these days are constantly drum-tracked or copy-and-pastes of 30 second loops, whereas to this day, jazz music is purely acoustic outside amplified guitars (and Miles Davis' later experiments)
That is where I feel the integrity of new music has disappeared, and why some may criticize.
@jazzydrums95 1969 happened 42 years ago; synths were a huge part of fusion and jazz in the seventies, and still are, and expand so much farther past miles's music. And when people started using the turntable as an instrument itself in that same decade, as well as using the art of a recorded sound or segment as an instrument, that was simply forward thinking. Sometimes it's the easy way out, but DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Madlib, etc. use it as an artistic tool. That's as pure as it gets.
I wish max roach were still alive, I would've loved to watch him live doing the thing he does best, churning out some soulful and technically proficient jazz. God the flow between the bass, piano, and sax is amazing.

much love to Max Roach, these musicians/artists are seldom heard of towards the younger generation. Go ask a young man about Lil' Wayne then ask them if he knows any Coltrane or Davis, maybe Hancock.
@GhettoKuumba I'm 18, and have played with artist like Christian McBride, Wayne Escoffery, and Mark Vinci to name a few. I also got accepted Berklee College of Music for music production and produce hip-hop/rap ( k-dub.bandcamp.com ). I see where you are coming from and agree on some point's but understand that their are young musicians who love and respect jazz and are continuing to evolve it
This video is truly awesome. Max and Abbey made a true classic jazz album. Max was already considered a great jazz drummer and Abbey was known as an actress and jazz diva. I feel Abbey's best performance in a movie was "Nothing But A Man", starring Abbey and Ivan Dixon. This video is like finding a gold mine. Abbey is still making great music.
It's Clifford Jordan on tenor, Eddie Khan on bass and, as already noted, Coleride-Taylor Parkinson on piano. The footage comes from a January 1964 European tour, possibly from Danish or Swedish tv.
I love Abbey Lincoln! I had forgotten that she was once married to Max Roach. I love her movie with Sidney P. called "For the Love of Ivy" with Beau Bridges.
