Indeed, Nadal was #4 in that tournament. He lost points in Australia, Indian Wells and didn't play in Rotterdam (lost 500 points). He was just behind Murray, but won Madrid (lost in 2009 finals) and Roland Garros (lost to Soderling 2009 R16), and got #2 back. After Wimbledon, he was #1.
@JnDproductions34 idk how that's a classic choke. tsonga came back against federer in '09 when he was down 5-1 and thrashed nadal at the AO in '08. sure there some moments where tsonga missed his chances, but that's the game. overall this was a phenomenal match with nadal edging him out.
my godness thats how a champion should be. look in aus08 tsonga won nadal and he made it look easy but they were killing eachother in the court, and now nadal won tsonga the same way. If you fall you must get up and come back stronger.
Two of my favourite players on tour. Adore Nadal. Love me some Jo-Willy, but my GOD I wish the bloke would be more consistent during matches! He gets to a point where he's not making shots or concentrating, then gets too low on himself and just tosses it in. There's no good reason why this man shouldn't be in the top five...just baffles me.
Amazing match. Tons of fast-paced, top spin heavy, corner to line shots. Man, this is modern tennis. Tsonga is still a strong player, but man Nadal, you can see his resolve to win this.
@dassmanen44 Nah, Rafa is one of the best service holders despite his serve being good but not great. He dictates points well off of it, hence being the world number 1 and the king of tennis :)!
I think Tsonga probably has the easiest time playing against Nadal on the whole tour. Nadal just manages to get the right shots at the right time. Which is why he's great.
@Ignozi yea true, that wasn't even near the best from rafa, anyone could have passed it, it was a shit placed shot by tsonga. fact: tsonga chokes against nadal now for no apparent reason.
The fact that he lost to Roddick, who had maybe the best match of his career, doesn't prove anything! Roddick himself admitted that he was a bit lucky to win that match! The claycourt season beggins and surely Rafa will be back.....!
Best of his career??? Your pushing it he's played way better than that. Go check out videos of Roddick back in 04/05 that was his best tennis of his career. As for nadal its the third match which nadal has taken the first set and then lost in 3. This is knocking his confidence down and coming into the clay season with a poor record against top players won't help either. Nadal can still dominate on clay, but as we saw last year there is a chance a player can catch fire and beat him.
I said "maybe". At least one of the best of his career. Nadal has a slight lack of confidence, but I don't think it will affect him on clay. There are many times he had a really bad defeat, and when he returns to clay , he beats in straight sets some of the top players(ex. his victory against Roddick in Davis cup after the US Open 2008). He is the best clay courter ever, his style is naturally designed to be effective on clay.
hahaha i love it when the rafa fans say he's back! and then he loses when it really matters! kneel to the real king FEDERER who only cares about GS and not bullshit M1000....
see???? u people?????? rafa is still out of sorts....just got owned by roddick. thats uncharacteristic like.... just because he raped an mentally fucked tsonga, doesnt mean his back. sorry i still love rafa, but im just proving my point to the guys who disagree with me, hes still not the same guy.
@BrotherTree1 he lost in the semis in indian wells to ljubicic, who won he tournament, and in the semis in key biscayne to roddick, who also won the tournament. how will he fare in the clay courts in monte-carlo, barcelona, rome, madrid, and so on?
@KPB112 Fed maybe, but i dont think Djokovic can do stuff like that. Tsonga, Nadal, along with Monfils are probably the most athletic players around today~
My GOD, this match was ridunkulously good. It was deep hitting, fast pace, corner to corner match. Reminds me of that aussie nadal vs. verdasco match. Wow! I just hope he can hang in there, I know the hard courts can be rough on his knee. And he had just tough competition: nalbandian & ferrer.
@siliconknight0000 except for the fact that that was five sets, way more competitive and intense and the points were much better... so if you look at it they arent that similar of matches....
tsongas mind just HAS to improve. cant expect to have chances of winning or making matches close, if he doesnt believe in himself. this is about as bad as ive seen tsonga play, but rafa's footwork looks so much better now, since the past fortnights. a very nice convincing win for rafa, but for tsonga; back to the drawing board.
@BrotherTree1 tsonga played a great game imo. the first 6 games of the match until the 3-3 were amazing by the two players, i've hardly every seen tsonga play such a good tennis. after that it's true that his mind failed, but it's natural because he was playing amazingly good and still he couldn't beat nadal! it's great to see rafa achieve such a good level of play, hopefully he will be able to avoid injuries and continue this progression. his best tennis is back, he just needs continuity.
@Jojos25 yeh it was close to some degree, but yep it was only bout time before his head fell apart. every time he wrecks the opportunity to convert the BP against rafa, he starts to disbelieve and start to sore lose. thats what i dont want to see from tsonga cauz that brings out the worst in him. reminds me of gasquet somewhat :( and he used to be my fav before he died out of tennis :(((
he still spares too much break points, but he's achieving a great level of play now. Too bad that I was so tired I felt asleep. Thanks for uploading. Vamos Rafa!
Rafa looks invincible!! I haven't see him like this for months. I see no Roddick's means to stop Rafa. Moreover Rafa is pretty likely to capture his first Miami title especially when most of top-ten's players are beaten out
Thank you so much for hand selecting these great highlights. I was bummed to have missed the match, but happy to see the unbelievable shotmaking of Nadal over and over again. Simply awesome.
yeah it was good shot making. seems like Rafa's luck going to change. 2 more games semi and finals, this is the stage in a tourn where he has failed over last 6 months.if he remains as aggresive as he was today and calm and collected during those crucial points like the break points in this match, he is going to have a good chance to win this tournament. Nadal showed Tsonga how to play tennis. Jo-Willy, you can't drop-shot your way to victory dumbass.
CeruleanTwist 1 year ago
@CeruleanTwist tsonga's a great player, did he drop shot like crazy in this? no.
in aussie '08 he used his touch perfectly. he won fair and square, no dishonor in his way of winning.

@CeruleanTwist That's what you do to guys who stand 10 feet behind the baseline. But yes, Tsonga didn't seem to get much out of them after a while.

He has to guard against being passive and kill/finish points whenever he gets chances like he did in this match. all the best for semis.
