  • I knew this was related to Pat Benatar's 'Shadows of the Night'. If I'm not mistaken, this song is a little bit earlier, so Pat's version is a variation of this one. They're both cool, I like.

  • WELL SAID SHUST

  • The unforgettable 80's. How come it still sounds this good in 2012?

  • This is what I call a woman with attitude.

  • Benetars version totally craps all over this lame one

  • She's so beautiful.

  • think it may be a lamb, fawn, or goat. but certainly there is an astronaut (I know these things you see)

  • lovely

  • det är en hund

  • i like Pat's lyrics better... And I like her voice better. And I just like her better. straight up. This video feels more like a speaking one rather than a singing one.

  • jennifer Rusch ??????????

  • to reiterate, this was written by a guy named d.l. byron back in '80/'81. his record company rejected it, not thinking it could be a hit. pat proved them wrong in '82.

my NEW favorite version came out last month by FIONA, who never heard the original 'til 6 months ago. AMAZED by his darker lyrics she put it on her new album UNBROKEN, recorded in a lower register for no other reason than to LESSEN the comparison to pat. it winds up giving more power to the words as well.

  • Hey everyone, this isn't bad. Not bad at all.

  • Can anybody put her song Hearts of Stone on YT, that was my favourite song of Helen, this one is also good but Hearts of stone (the whole album) was great....

  • gosh! such sexy lips! wish i could touch them with mine...

  • you suck you ruined a fast song with emotion

  • oh helen,die beste!

  • Sie hat eine gewisse Ähnlichkeit mit Joan Collins (in jüngeren Jahren), finde ich. Geniale Stimme!

  • tolle stimme,tolle frau!

  • HELEN;FIRST REAL KICK

  • Ewww. Makes me think of some cross of 80s and Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Her body language is so non-existent, and her teeth so prominent, it's like a billboard sign for some animal act. Then her delivery is pretty stiff. And while her singing ain't bad - and I do love lower voices - her timbre needed some work. Needs some 'cream'.

  • @aculturemind roflmaoo that's too funny xD

  • Helen sings it in more of a conversational style (but Christ she can sing!)

Pat Benatar has a beautiful voice.

This is my theme song for today.

  • It seems different from Benatar's version, Almost like a totally different song. I like it though.

  • this sounds terrible

sounds like someone whining and yelling at the same time

    simply terrible

    :/

  • @CattitudeInterlude Funniest thing I've read all day. LOL!

  • @rellenoz :D good :) have a great day

    =^=

  • There is not a single bum note in Benatar's version, no matter what schusterlehrling repeatedly says. Benatar is a trained opera singer with a confirmed 5-octave range. She could've sung this song in each of those octaves without missing a note -- why in the world would she have released a studio version with a mistake? The answer is: she didn't.

I do like Schneider's version, now that I've heard it. And I've no need to bash it just because I am a 30+-year fan of Benatar's.

  • u can really hear helen's amazing voice in this, but it's not the best song for her, or at least maybe they needed to work on it more.

  • I'm so happy an astronaut walked through the door into the misty room with her at the end, holding a joey - but i dont know why.

  • How deep is my dislike of this version.

  • She looks better then her singing

  • Comment removed

  • She looks kinda Pat Benatar meets Cher, I think.

  • @thathoodwink......this is D.L. Byron's original lyric....both Rachel Sweet and Pat Benatar wrote their own lyrics (check the differences in their versions) to make the song less masculine and a bit less severe

  • I don't know whether to laugh or not...what's up with the changed lyrics for starters?

  • There's a lot of Patti Smith in this. Yet it's a real authentic rock gem nevertheless.

  • Interesting version, but my favorite is still Rachel Sweet's. (& what the hell was that astronaut with the dog all about? I guess that's all they could find in the prop room that day.)

  • She somewhere reminds me of one of my other favorite female artists, Ellen Foley. Verry catchy song that made me want to liste to more of her.

  • There's something about this version that makes me like it better than Pat Benatar's. Not sure what but there's something :)

  • @Citygirl87

Helen's voice has more power and scope.

Also the drums are superb, while Pat has tamed drums.

  • I like this version better than pats. pats version is little bit overproduced and sound gay. This version is more rough.

  • @afflictionmahocias WHat do you mean sound gay? Ugh.I don't like it when people use that word for a synonym for another adjective.

  • Wow, Helen Schneider was beautiful.

  • Pat has more punch than Helen......

  • Are there any recorded versions of this song sung by a male vocalist?

  • @rocknrollphilip I've been looking, i'm afraid not as of yet...

  • Liked it!

  • an astronaut, a dog..and CO2...surreal and amazing

  • Don't change the lyrics. Make your own damn song. Pat is a goddess (Neil too) and this is disrespectful.

  • @chuckfleener she didnt change the lyrics, Pat And Neil Did, if you get Pat's box Set, theirs liner notes on every song , and they did get sude over this song, cuz the guy that gave it to them. ( It was A Black Guy, cuz i even had the sheet music to this song and his pic was on the back cover as the writter) and said it was ok for then to recored it and change it , well he never wote the song he stole it and this is the way it was written, check out the box set anf you'll find out

  • Sorry, Helen Schneider doesn't hold a candle, vocally, to Pat Benatar, and this video makes no sense (an astronaut with a funky "alien" dog?). At least Pat Benatar's vid makes some sense (and is a wonderful story, even if it doesn't have much, if anything, to do with the song).

  • @moonhawk64

In contrast to Pat she is an acclaimed and priced classical singer that turned to a Rock singer.

Her voice has more range, power and versatility then Pat's.

Just listen and dont close your ears.

  • @schusterlehrling

What do you mean in contrast to Pat. Pat is also a clasically trained singer who was being groomed to become a professional opera singer.

  • @schusterlehrling Pat was originally trained to be an opera singer, but then she turned to rock. How many other female rock artists have you heard of that have a four-and-a-half octave voice range?

  • @schusterlehrling Pat was originally trained to be an opera singer, but then she turned to rock. How many other female rock artists have you heard of that have a four-and-a-half octave voice range? And I'm replying a year later, but I don't care.

  • Cool. Now let me hear Kate Bush do this, to complete the ultimate brunette trio.

  • @joshcop608 Benatar covered Wuthering Heights on her Crimes of Passion album. Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.

  • These are the original lyrics written by D.L. Byron. Outstanding lyrics.

  • Hmm. I'd say that Pat Benatar is the better singer, but this version has some interesting lyrics. The video just reminds us how weird & weak music videos could be in the early days. Heck, how many people here were even alive for the early days of MTV?

  • I never knew this or Rachel Sweet's version existed. I grew up listening to and knowing only Pat Benatar's.

  • this was the chick in the Eddie and the Cruisers movie, she was Eddie's girl and a singer in the Cruisers....Wow! You didn't hear her sing like this in the movie!

  • wow.

  • these lyrics are different the pat benetar's aren't they?

  • This is much better than Pat Benatar's version. She's a fantastic singer.

    (terrible video though :-)

  • This video f*#!&*+g sucks! This girl can't sing. Where's Simon Cowell when you really want him!!!!!!!!

  • This video f*#!&*+g sucks! This girl can't sing. Where's Simon Cowell when you really want him!!!!!!!!

  • She's actually cuter than Pat...though I think Pat's version is better, but slightly.

  • This is atrocious-what an insult to Ms.Benatar!! Truly awful....

  • You people have got to be kidding right?!

Now I know how we got Obama!!

    Helen who? Really?!

You're not seriously comparing this abortion to the mighty Pat Benatar are you?

Even that weak-ass Disney/bubblegum/ipod puke named Ashley Tisdale did it better, which is crazy because I can fart with more soul than that moron!! But this? There is a reason it wasnt that popular until Benatar belted it out, and now we know.

Now hurry and give this comment a thumbs down like anyone cares...

  • @NoBSAmerican

Atcually this Version sold more the 10 times better then Pat Benetars version, even though it was not released in thje USA.

  • @schusterlehrling So what? Here are some more people who sold lots of albums:

Milli Vanilli, Vanilla Ice, Weird Al Yankovich, Devo, Alvin and the Chipmunks....

If you're judging talent by album sales, then you've given my previous comment total validity.

And how do you know it was 10 times?

    What were the actual numbers?

If you're going to take the time to respond with a statistic, then please send a reference as well.

    Thank you. :)

  • i dig this vocal, too. nice mouth. thanks for the treat!

  • and don't forget the random Astronaut at the tail-end of the video. I love her lips too! :)

  • Long live Helen Schneider!!!!!!!!!

  • HELEN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • As a musician and a vocalist, I have to say Pat Benatar's version is way better. I don't know it she's doing it on purpose but her pronunciacion is choppy. She sounds like she lacks "soul" in her voice. Just my opinion. That's what I hear.....and I used to be a studio recording engineer (the sound guy).

  • I loved Pat Benatar's singing too, but why did she butcher the lyrics of this song? This song was about having "guts to live in this world." That's rock and roll! Was Pat afraid of Neil Geraldo's masculinity being threatened by too strong of a woman?A grown man needs a lover, not a mommy.

I don't care if Helen's voice is rough, bring it on, this is the shit!! I think of kicking some ass, like watching a Clint Eastwood movie when I hear this version and I can't get enough!!!

  • @IsaiahM33

Pat's voicerange was not broad neough for it.

She sang a few notes out of tune because she coulsnot do it.

And that is what you call way better.

Have you ever heard a real singer?

You dn't have to be loud, you have to HIT the notes.

  • @schusterlehrling I call Pat's better because of her power and range. ANd if some notes were pitchy, well we're human, this was the 80's and there was no autotune.BTW sales don't determine talent.Ask Kesha. She's a work in progress

  • @Akee1990

It is pitchy because she does not have the range of Helen.

Some notes are just not there.

    And her power....

    I heard both live.

I know who can fill a hall without a microphone.

    And it's not Pat, sorry.

  • @schusterlehrling To each his own.I prefer Pat's version

  • @schusterlehrling Do your research: Benatar is and was a perfectionist and a trained opera singer with a confirmed 5-octave range. She's also, according to Billboard Magazine, the "best-selling female rock artist of all time." If you feel you need to insult her or pretend that Schneider has somehow outsold her in order to make Schneider seem better, then you don't have enough faith in Schneider. They're both great -- insulting one out of loyalty to the other is just silliness.

  • Good news, there is a New Best-of featuring this song!!!!!!! I am definatly gettin' it.

  • Pat Benetar coverd THIS version.

    Helen sang it first.

    It still rocks.

  • I made a mistake. For goodness sake, I didn't do my homework. But I admit that Helen Schneider is way better than Pat Benetar.

  • Helen recorded this song before Rachel Sweet and Pat Benetar.

  • Thanks for the info, I grew up from Pat Benetar's cover. I heard Rachel Sweet cover once as well.

  • shes sexy!!!!

  • Nice video.

  • Wow. Never heard this version before.

  • honestly i think it isn't lively enough like look at ashley tisdale and pat benatar they sing it great but its lively! she has a great voice anyway!!!

  • She was a classicla singer before.

Just watch her rendition of "Heideröslein" she sang in 1978.

Maybe the best take of a classical German folk song ever.

  • This is the most faithful version to D.L. Byron's original demo.

But Rachel Sweet gets my vote.

  • well - the good old times!

  • I honestly dont know which to say that I like more. I feel Helen's lyrics make more sense, but I lurves Pat and her voice more lol. I might have to say that I like this one just a tad bit more. This is the first time I am hearing the original version. I can't believe I didn't know about it as much as I love rock and Pat Benatar.

  • Sounds like Nina and 99 Balloons.

  • Nena. :)

  • they look similar perhaps but i don't hear it...other than both being german

  • Helen is American, not German.

  • well she has a german name sings in german sometimes and more popular there than america ..but ok

  • Don't get fooled.

Sandar Bullock has no German name, but is German.

And Mr. Ueberrroth, the organizer of the 1984 Olympic games has a name that can only be pronounced in German, but he is American.

The problem is that the USA has not many native names as there are not many natives left.. Most have names from other continents, as most Americans are not native born.

Maybe Seattle or Dakota is an exception.

So Amrican names are always namews from another country.

  • Actually she`s American of Yekkish (German-Jewish) extraction.

  • i like this one better

  • I vote Pat Benatar's version is better

  • Do you mean Ashley Pissdale?

Oh yeah, its much better than the Version from Helen Schneider.

    Muahaaaaaaa!!

    ITS NOT!!!

    Clean your Ears.

  • The fact that your name is comprised of two teen singers, both with little talent really doesn't help your argument. I guess only time will tell though. People are still listening to Helen Schneiders and Pat Benatar's versions nearly 3 decades later. I guess we'll see if those two are remembered at all, let alone their music.

  • @Zionstardust Helen who?

  • As for Ashley's remake, seriously if you are going to do such a famous classic you better own it or don't even bother. Those who know the original will always prefer it over the poor knockoffs.

  • Might be even true. I can tell you why!

There was a great invention called computers tuning up your voice becaue nearly none of todays singers have any talent. Tisdale not included.

SHE IS THE REAL CAUSE OF IT!

HER PICTURE IS THE ONE SMILING AT YOU IF YOU LOOK UP THE MEANING OF THE WORD "TALENTLESS" IN A DICTIONARY!

    GROW STUPID KID, GROW!

  • I made a video called einhleypur or single in youtube , then by chance I was looking it up in google and saw my face.

  • I think i prefer pat's version of the song. But helen is pretty damn awesome and has a great rock voice

  • hab sie damals 3 mal live gesehen! hammer!!

  • Eine der wohl geilsten weiblichen Rockstimmen überhaupt. Ist dann leider zum Musical gewechselt. Schade drum.

  • and thx Udo L. :-)

  • thx fritz!
