Iamaperson needs to get his facts strait.Mfezi's goal was to end poaching by offering captive bred African snakes for less than poachers could making it pointless to poach. He came to California as a vet tech which he was for a couple of year in my hometown of San Diego. Or are you talking about working for the reptile supply company that doesn't sell pets, only supplies. Either way quit hating and get your facts strait. Lies might satisfy PETA members but they don't fly here, but nice try ;)

People, Donald is not who AP is trying to make him out to be. He is not a biologist. He holds no degree. Do the research and you'll find out this is true. Donald started out here in the states commercially importing and exporting animals...that's right selling animals for profit. If you think he's in this for the animal's welfare, think again.

I'll retract my comment and offer apologies if you can give more than a vague statement. Or to say this , what species are you aware of him importing or exporting commercially. What is your proof that he's in it only for money. Do you know him personally? What is your understanding of herptilogical vetrinary practices, give me some proof and I will retract providing it is not typical AR statements that claim anyone who touches a wild animal is trying to harm it.

I was specific when I stated he imported and exported animals. And the only reason someone does this is for money. Providing a list of all of the animals would be too lengthy to write here. Even so, working as a vet tech does not make someone a venom or animal expert. Which is what AP and Donald himself claims to be. Look at his personal website and you can see his credentials. None of which involve any schooling at any university whatsoever.

Universities don't offer a degree in herptology. While a person can get one in biology , herptology is something else that comes through experience. I can say I am a herptologist and would be no less of a liar. Most of the people that have made the greatest discoveries in herptoculture were not from universities or zoos but reptile hobbyist and breeders. Degrees only get you so far, you can't show a animaql you are trying to help a degree and it won't bite you.

I'm fully aware of the history thank you. What got this hobby/interest started was very different back years ago compared to today. But commercial collecting is still the same...expoiting wild animals for profit. And for Donald to claim he is a conservationist, well that is just hypocritical of him. As for claiming to be a herpetologist, I never said anything about Donald having a degree in that field. I stated Donald has NO degree period...in anything!

Writing several peer reviewed scientific studies has to be somewhere in the realm of what you consider credentials. Commercial collecting and breeding are two totally different things. You still can't name what he imported or for who which leaves me to believe you don't know. Show me one of his papers that deals specifically with venom. Most of his writing deals with herping and were published in magazines like Reptiles. Not very good credentials for someone claiming to be a "Venom Expert". You obviously have a problem with him being criticised but once someone decides to be in the public eye, they're open to public scrutiny. This isn't about you or myself but rather Donald and what he is claiming to be.

I take offense when anyone in the herping community gets trash talked by someone outside the community. BTW, collecting venom in the field for research like Donald claims is not used. Companies don't buy it as the venom most likely won't be viable. And especially when there are various people in this control who focus mainly on venom extraction and providing that venom for research and other companies. The people who do extract venom have many animals they rely upon and do so under controlled conditions. They provide alot more venom than a tiny sample from the field like Donald claims to do.

My whole point is if one claims to be an expert at something, you should have the credentials to back yourself up. Not just I grew up around snakes, worked at some animal park, sold animals, etc. Experience certainly does go a long way I agree, but many people can claim to be experts on snakes by that alone if that's your logic. As for others in this field, check out the forums and you'll see how hobbyists and professionals alike are simply laughing at Donald and his show.

I'm a member of USARK and SDHS and have been in the hobby for several years. Never heard anyone speak bad of the guy exept for the same people who think Steve Erwin got what he deserved( animal right activist) Someone doesn't get asked to be a key speaker at the International Herptilogical Symposym by just being around reptiles. Ok he caught his first venomous snake at nine years old and waqs working at the swaziland reptile center by the time he was fifteen. As for selling animals for profit, Who has made great advances in our understanding in reptole husbandry any ecology who hasn't? I'm a fan of both but Donald is the only one I've met. What are you talking about? It goes for your ankle because most of the time it can see your flesh or sense the heat coming from your ankle. Your shoe blocks out all notification of any flesh so it attacks your ankle instead. They have bad reasoning, of course it would risk it.
