'Me and Max' were their sons Davey and Max, and everyone else on the show was played by Steve and Morag. One frequent character was 'Uncle Red', Steve's brother. That was the birth of Red Green.
The first season of the show set te format for all the others. What happened is that Red would try telling us one of these stories but Harold got bored too easily and cut to another segment. When Red finally got done, the show was over.
(*Pondered Thought*)Funny....I always catch it on Saturday. What time is he on during a Friday Night? Because no one told me anything about a Friday Night on PBS. Also, Harold IS the glue that holds the show together. Gotta rep for the nerds;) Ya digg?
Lol Harold might add pizazz to the show, but he definately doesn't hold it together, in the early seasons of red green harold wasn't even there and it was still great lol but yeah, gotta rep for the nerds:P
What?? Harold was there from the first episode of "Red Green." He was only missing from most of seasons 8-11, I believe? Pat McKenna left because he thought the character had been overdone.
We get it here every Saturday Night at 9:30ET, depending if we don't get something different around that time. But still, it's the most entertaining show I've ever watched, and yet...I still love it, even in reruns^^
I did a gig last week for a small but nice event. Our band closed the after party when Smith & Smith finished their show. I have to say- they were awesome. Warm show, great tunes and harmonies. And funny! Great local jokes for the place they were in.
Red Green was based on a real show on CBC, "The Red Fisher Show". John Candy also did a send-up on SCTV, with his "Gil Fisher". Red Fisher used to go on fishing and hunting trips and film them with a cheap old Super-8 handheld camera. These films had no sound so Red Fisher and his sportsman guest (who was usually Ted Williams) would sit there and reminisce and joke about the trip, getting drunker as the show went on. Remember spending lots of Saturday mornings as a kid watching him.
In a sort of way, you could call it a spin-off. As a sketch, Red Green only appeared a few times during each season, anywhere from 4-6 sketches per season. The show that succeeded Smith & Smith, entitled "The Comedy Mill" featured the Red Green character more prominently. This probably paving the way for the Red Green Show itself.
That was "Me & Max". I only remember seeing one episode, and you're right, it was pretty mediocre. Though I do have the theme song on a tape somewhere in my house, I did like it.
"Smith & Smith" was a much better show than "Red Green". Remember Steve and Morag singing? They were amazing. Steve wrote and produced all 195 episodes of S&S.
Smith & Smith was one of the highlights of my growing up. The songs were the icing on the cake for me. Steve and Morag had amazing harmony, and though the songs were corny as hell, I just loved them. I may dig through my S&S archives and post some of the songs/sketches I have on tape.
If you find any sketches when they were teachers in the staffroom with Steve in drag, I'd love to see them! Wasn't he "Gloria" and she "Edna"? Wasn't he always remarking on her odiferous salmon sandwiches? (Why can't I remember where I put my keys/cell/dog leash, like I remember stuff like this?)
Dull and corny? Brother you need to learn how to appreciate subtle humor.

It was clever, if a little strained sometimes.

It depends on your station. Some PBS stations air it all week, some only give us a single episode a week.

History of the Red & Green Show before the dawning of it's name? Hmm...I think I may look more into this.

I miss the Red Green show. I used to catch it on PBS, but I've moved and the PBS stations don't play it here.

I remember they did a sitcom together with their own kids. Man did that suck.
