@MrGeocidal You would be amazed how many Windows users don't know how to use their computer properly. I know people that have used Microsoft Office every day of their working life but ask them to install a new printer (drivers? huh?) or even a new program for that matter and they've looked at me blankly. Those people kick my ass at Office but beyond that, Outlook and the internet they're completely at a loss. Not all Windows users are like that, many aren't but there is a sizeable amount.
I use(d) Linux, but find BSD a little better. Most software compiles from source, not the insane amount of variety of distro's and in the case of NetBSD, that single os will run on nearly anything.

@rmaucigasha Well most people pay to have everything installed for them. If you install your own software then linux is easy to setup, maybe much easier to setup than windows depending what you want and easier to maintain to stay up to date than mac and windows. So whatever floats your boat really. I like how fast linux starts up, cause no antivirus (30 secs vs 4 mins), I can actually get a lot of things done very easy on linux. There are many unsatisfied windows users out there. Also I had 2 webcams that worked better in linux than windows, in that they worked in linux in windows horrible picture, just white lines. And also my digital tv tuner card works perfectly in kaffeine on linux but in windows I got heaps of crashes with DVBViewer TE/Pro, very annoying. Yeah, Linux is hot, but as Steve Jobs discovered decades ago, when he visited the Xerox company, that the graphic interface IS the future not the command line interface thing (which was DOS at that time). So if you want everyday-people to switch to Linux, then this OS must get more and more friendly (but not a copy of windows... it would be stupid). Anyway, good initiative!
@sinschild07 I DO HAVE AN IDEA and I tell you is NOT faster, because at some point you will have so many hot keys and so many commands to type that everything would be a mess. Look around you, everything is getting more graphically and more intuitive. You are just like Gary Kildall how couldn't see the future of PC's.
Windows was here. Go back to banging rocks together. Weren't you that idiot that couldn't take online classes because you ordered a dell with ubuntu? Stop making videos.
Honestly Linux is better for noobs than Windows is IMO
Sure when I installed Ubuntu I didn't have AMD drivers right away. But neither did my Win7 install. Those things only come in prebuilds made by companies
And Ubuntu's software center where you can download and install anything without having to surf the web is AMAZING
I made the switch to GNU/Linux last August and I haven't looked back since. I like the plethora of choice I get with open source software. I've learned more using Linux than I ever would have had I continued to use Windows. Also, the community is awesome and ever so helpful. It still amazes me that a community of individuals I have never met are so willing to help me out with the *occasional problem and Microsoft's paid tech support sucks in comparison.
@geographypony Did you notice an increase in speed? I'm considering finally making the switch to linux, simply because I'm tired of windows being a resource hog. I've been using my system for the same thing (multimedia, no gaming) for 10 frickin years and yet I have to keep upgrading it because the OS just gets more and more resource hungry. I'm tired of upgrading just to be able to do the same things I was doing with Windows 98 on a Pentium 2!!
@nightmathzombieethan Depends. Linux can be as fast or as slow as you want it too be. With the staggering choices you get in graphical environments and windows managers, you can run anything from a KDE Plasma desktop with all the bells and whistles that'll bring most modern computers to their knees or you can run something as light as JWM that'll make your old Pentium II seem fast again. Most newbies start with either Ubuntu or Linux Mint running Unity or Gnome (respectively).
@geographypony Btw, I'm running KDE4 here on 3 computers, my netbook (1,6GHz HyperThreading, 1GB RAM), a notebook (Around 1,8GHz dual-core, 1GB RAM) and my normal computer (2,5GHz dual-core, 4GB RAM) and they all run perfect without any lag or whatever. I really have no idea, what people do to slow down KDE4 that much... And before you're asking: Yes, 1 gig of ram is enough for KDE. (Running on ArchLinux + KDE)
@xmine08 Your correct. A base install of kde really only needs 512mb of ram (theoretically?sp??). After all the little effects and modifications have been added, I've read (never actually ran kde myself, except for a couple of test runs) that your system will slow down. Although, this is true for gnome as well once you enable all the compiz effects, add some heavy weight themes and icons, etc. I'm an openbox/lxde fan myself.
Nixie and my friend introduced me to Ubuntu. At first, it felt foreign and I didn't like it... at least Ubuntu. Also, the first time I installed Ubuntu, I dual-booted, and erasing Linux frightened me, and I'm lucky I fixed the MBR with EasyBCD or I'd have an unbootable system. Later, my friend told me about KDE and I tried Kubuntu and I LOVED IT! After 2 weeks of nonstop use, I decided to give GNOME2 another try, and never turned back. Now I'm running Arch Linux and soon Slackware.
Several options before taking the plunge into ditching windows for linux. Look for open source alternatives to your main programs, OpenOffice, Firefox, Opera, Thunderbird, etc.. Once they see that the open source alternatives are free, and that they work just as well as paid software. You can install virtualbox, run linux distro virtually. Use a live CD, or install it to a pendrive. Plus there is always WINE for some software, or run windows virtually, or have a dual boot setup.
With Windows, EVERYTHING is done for you, so basically windows users never learn anything, ive learned so much in Linux, how to partition, using APT, using the Terminal Console, and BASH, installing a *NIX distro, installing drivers from source, compiling from source (list goes on...)
god you talk and sound like "willow" from buffy the vampire slayer. I like the "dolled up" look, but face it, without make up you look like a bad prostitute. ugly whore
there is only one think to say for all sad windows users. you all keep paying mr gates to rule the world, thus ruling you as well as he can steal all your info in no time. windows is made globaly available and easy even though its not the best. linux on the other hand is free and depends on people to make good apps for it. at the age of 35 i think i'll switch especially after seeing my old laptop coming back to life with ubuntu and being faster than my new one ;)
Why do you refer to someone who wants an OS that works without having a steep learning curve a "Windows user"? Not wanting to use the CLI in Linux doesn't make people stupid. Stupid is having to remember a bunch of commands in order to install a freaking program. Seriously, why don't we just build a time machine and go back to 1992.
neh... linux is for lazy guys like me... Windows, on the other hand is for the guys that like a LOT of tinkering with viruses, firewalls, reinstalling windows and such...
Also note, that when you ask a computer noob about an O/S, the first word they say is "windows" just like a baby says "mama" for his first word. But we are grown up now, aren'r we? So it's time to learn some new words like "Linux", "Mac os" and "Unix"... DONT BE A BABY - SWITCH!
what about language translation? if you have grown up with windows (like I have) and trying to make the switch late in life (me again) you have no idea what the hell anyone is talking about when you were things like "panel" or "package manager" or "window manager". It's probably easy to overlook when you've been in the linux community a long time, so i get it. But old windows users need a travel guide!
WAIT.................................................I have used UNIX the last 20 years of my professional career (Unix is the king). Linux is really good (not like UNIX) but anyway is good. But Ubuntu and all the GUI interfaces on top of Linux really suck. People believe Ubuntu or Red Hat or whatever are LInux, but this is not like that. Linux is the OS Ubuntu is just a Mac OS cartoon. Linux is excellent Ubuntu sucks. So keep from that.

i love the fact everyone knocks linux. even tho its free has no security holes no virus's most programs are a really good alternative to the windows versions all programs are free and programs that dont fit the standard of the common fool... sorry i ment windows user .. has wine to run most of the commonly used programs that you use for windows. now i know what you going to say, WHAT ABOUT GAMES? there is variety of games if you bothered to look and wine can play most of windows games.
Full List of commands for the shell I would be good was a dos user I would like to get comfortable using the command line trying to install certain program's requires it, I am not LINUX virgin but I need to improve my LINUX love making technique
Who wants to learn to program again? I did that back in college and when with NASA. Learning Unix tried me as did Fortran and Dbase 4. I like the easy way now and sorry to say it but, this kid is not playing 'how to' as of yet.
awful.... less of "flam-buoyant advocacy" and more of tech is required it's right that most folks will switch from windows but we must present evryhtin' gnu/linux has to offer...
Yeah it is a free site Im sure if you ask the Nixiepixel she would tell you all about it. The site has links to the various Distro's web page and from there you can Download an .iso file to burn later to your cd or DVD
@Penduluman actually you mean Gnome vs KDE the one difference off the top of my head is that KDE has a Generally, KDE focuses on offering as many features as possible with as many graphical ways as possible for configuring those features. Gnome, on the other hand, opts for simplicity and often hides certain configurations in order to achieve that simplicity. in a nut shell gnome is almost like using WINDOW s except for the paralyzing fear of Viruses myself I prefer KDE
@Penduluman Gnome and KDE are both Graphical Environments. Most Linux distros seem to come packaged with Gnome already. The few KDE ones I can think of off hand are PCLinuxOS and Kubuntu (ofcourse). Ubuntu comes with Gnome, as does Linux Mint, Fedora 14, etc.
@Penduluman you can compare it because Linux is the name of the core. Ubuntu is the name of the eyecandy shit that make users go to Ubuntu instead of Debian.
@kookoon durrrrrr? lol. what are you some kinda fucktard, redneck whigger that has nothing better to do than to post stupid unconstructive criticizing comments on a nice help woman's video. DEE DEE DEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE . here's your sign april fools dumbass! do not pass go and collect 200 bucks, no bankruptcy option, denied, packed, sacked, tagged, hogtied, massacred, and DONE. you and Jerry mouse can now compare dick sizes while ya grow up.
Its easy - make all my devices working under linux properly and EASILY, with all proper drivers, and make as good as windows programs on linux. Then maybe i change my default OS. But until then, linux is good enough to put in fridge or something...
On a side note, I'm relieved to finally see the stereotypes of single male virgin nerds and "so ugly they don't have friends and/or a life" female nerds crumble to pieces and develop into something less sexist and patronising. Well, apart from the "you're a good-looking female nerd, so basically I'd try and get at you if I weren't such a douche" comments. Keep going and reach for the 1-Up 'shrooms. ;-)
I recently had to work on a Windows binary of the Eden compiler (basically a parallel version of Haskell a group at my uni developed), so I had to actually use a Windows machine (upside was having my own office). I can't even begin to list the things the OS lacks. Anyways, I discovered that people not knowing your basic IT stuff often find it easier to get used to Linux (including bash) than Windows. I reckon the sole thing making migration difficult is the being used to the "Windows way."
1. k10stat for amd turion - undervolting ; ubuntu has it but has it on alpha. and it's not compiled. it's called TPC. it's easy to compile it, but why not make the dev file available with the source file? I can use it while i'm learning it.
2. Microsoft office with the complete suite working. Excel and outlook is irreplaceable. We're talking huge excel files with pivot tables that get messed up in open office.
@secretbadger2 You would be surprised how many games you can play on Linux now. I personally use Ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop, and openSUSE 11.3 on my laptop. If you're just starting out though, I recommend Linux Mint 9 because it's very "noob friendly".

At the end of the day, Windows users aren't going to move from the familiar to the un-familiar without a good, clear reason.
Will Linux make them more efficient at doing X, Y or Z? Will it make their lives easier in some measurable fashion?
At the moment, for most users (read : non-IT / IT-related professionals and academics), the answer is a resounding no - even if they embark on the relatively steep learning curve.
... but out of box hardware support is long fking overdue ...
a reason why linux will never be wide spread as windows is because its not the simplest os to use, nor developers are paid hence not motivated, it will remain a minor community forever unless things change completely
an irony, free doesnt always motivate to usage, at least in operative systems, what of we look further than just free stuf, what about functionality and simplicity, what about not only the need of a command line to install an app, oh well
@eurodance97 The problem is thay you are talking about something you don't have any fucking idea. When you tried Linux? 15 years ago? maybe in 1991, when it went first time public?.
You have that annoying "i am so clever" typical speech, and don't know anything. You CAN use the command line IF you want, or you can do it via package managers (since 1999). It is simpler, it doesn't confuse or annoy you with zillions of confirmation messages just for installing an app. And it spreaded years ago
Problem with most free to use operating systems like Linux is that there is little to no support for 90% of PC games for Linux. However with that said, the 10% that dose support it is also the 10% most played, with the exception of a few. Problem is as much as I dislike Windows, I love Direct X. One of the only good things Microsoft came up with on their own. Since I operate under a 64-bit architecture, OpenGL doesn't cut it for me.
And to the people crying for little Adobe support, I am a Digital Designer. And I can say as much as I enjoy using Adobe's products on a Mac which isn't connected to the internet. Adobe's products have horrid overhead, scatter-code throughout them makes them liable to be hackable gateways into your system when you run them, every time they bring out a rushed patch or version. There are better open source ones out there if you know where to look.
Industrial Light and Magic and Macromedia should of never sold out to Adobe, those programs ran a lot better when they were still being programed by their original programmers.
1. Bigger registers (64 instead of 32), so theoretically faster in handling/calculating big numbers. In practice it's sometimes slower!
2. Thanks to the bigger registers, the adress-space for the memory is a lot bigger. Theoretically you can adress 16EB of RAM. In practice the limit is 56TB.
Also, I get pretty miffed when I find that there's no reasonable way to do via a CLI something which in no way requires a GUI. (I'm looking at you, Wireshark.) As much as I like to see Windoze users moving to freer operating systems, I would hate for the GUI to become the default with us CLI power users becoming an afterthought. Of course, we GNU/Linux users are somewhat of an afterthought anyway when it comes to companies like Adobe neglecting to provide a 64-bit GNU/Linux player.
I've spent years of my life streamlining my (Gentoo) system in such a way that I only have need to move to the mouse very rarely, and I suspect this is the case for at least a significant number of GNU/Linux developers, which probably explains to a large extent the lack of GUI solutions for tasks that can be accomplished better (in the opinion of the GNU/Linux power user) with a CLI.
@Iamthelaw1526 I had 9.10. my motherboard is hosed as well. I'm going to get a new computer instead of a hard drive, memory stick and motherboard for a 7 yr old puter. The computer repair folks said HP works ok w/ Linux. Thank you much for the advice. I think Linux is too much for the avg user. It was fun to try tho.
@Iamthelaw1526 Thanks for the help. I have it plugged in and doesn't work. Not even recognized. You're response is exactly why many people don't much care for stuck-up computer nazis. Thanks again.

Don't dump on MS.
After-all, Tuesday after Black Friday I dropped $7,200 on MS stock and sold all for over 2.7 million 3 years ago.
Go figure, I still use Linux as main OS.
HarcourtMarketing 6 months ago
Yeah, Linux is hot, but as Steve Jobs discovered decades ago, when he visited the Xerox company, that the graphic interface IS the future not the command line interface thing (which was DOS at that time). So if you want everyday-people to switch to Linux, then this OS must get more and more friendly (but not a copy of windows... it would be stupid). Anyway, good initiative!
05SZK 7 months ago
@05SZK do you have any idea how much faster general control of your computer can be with the use of a console and hot keys? No? I didn't think so.

It still amazes me that a community of individuals I have never met are so willing to help me out with the *occasional problem and Microsoft's paid tech support sucks in comparison.
geographypony 8 months ago 18
@geographypony Did you notice an increase in speed? I'm considering finally making the switch to linux, simply because I'm tired of windows being a resource hog. I've been using my system for the same thing (multimedia, no gaming) for 10 frickin years and yet I have to keep upgrading it because the OS just gets more and more resource hungry. I'm tired of upgrading just to be able to do the same things I was doing with Windows 98 on a Pentium 2!!
nightmathzombieethan 8 months ago
@nightmathzombieethan Depends. Linux can be as fast or as slow as you want it too be. With the staggering choices you get in graphical environments and windows managers, you can run anything from a KDE Plasma desktop with all the bells and whistles that'll bring most modern computers to their knees or you can run something as light as JWM that'll make your old Pentium II seem fast again. Most newbies start with either Ubuntu or Linux Mint running Unity or Gnome (respectively).
geographypony 8 months ago
@geographypony Btw, I'm running KDE4 here on 3 computers, my netbook (1,6GHz HyperThreading, 1GB RAM), a notebook (Around 1,8GHz dual-core, 1GB RAM) and my normal computer (2,5GHz dual-core, 4GB RAM) and they all run perfect without any lag or whatever. I really have no idea, what people do to slow down KDE4 that much... And before you're asking: Yes, 1 gig of ram is enough for KDE. (Running on ArchLinux + KDE)
xmine08 8 months ago

Tradeofjane 1 year ago
neh... linux is for lazy guys like me...
IngvardM 1 year ago
what about language translation? if you have grown up with windows (like I have) and trying to make the switch late in life (me again) you have no idea what the hell anyone is talking about when you were things like "panel" or "package manager" or "window manager". It's probably easy to overlook when you've been in the linux community a long time, so i get it. But old windows users need a travel guide!

Whats the difference between Linux and Ubuntu Linux?
Penduluman 1 year ago
@Penduluman actually you mean Gnome vs KDE the one difference off the top of my head is that KDE has a Generally, KDE focuses on offering as many features as possible with as many graphical ways as possible for configuring those features. Gnome, on the other hand, opts for simplicity and often hides certain configurations in order to achieve that simplicity. in a nut shell gnome is almost like using WINDOW s except for the paralyzing fear of Viruses myself I prefer KDE
GORATPHUQ 1 year ago
@GORATPHUQ What is Gnome and KDE? and were can I get Gnome?
Penduluman 1 year ago
@Penduluman Gnome and KDE are both Graphical Environments. Most Linux distros seem to come packaged with Gnome already. The few KDE ones I can think of off hand are PCLinuxOS and Kubuntu (ofcourse). Ubuntu comes with Gnome, as does Linux Mint, Fedora 14, etc.
geographypony 1 year ago
@Penduluman you can compare it because Linux is the name of the core. Ubuntu is the name of the eyecandy shit that make users go to Ubuntu instead of Debian.

At the end of the day, Windows users aren't going to move from the familiar to the un-familiar without a good, clear reason.
Will Linux make them more efficient at doing X, Y or Z? Will it make their lives easier in some measurable fashion?
At the moment, for most users (read : non-IT / IT-related professionals and academics), the answer is a resounding no - even if they embark on the relatively steep learning curve.
... but out of box hardware support is long fking overdue ...

a reason why linux will never be wide spread as windows is because its not the simplest os to use, nor developers are paid hence not motivated, it will remain a minor community forever unless things change completely
an irony, free doesnt always motivate to usage, at least in operative systems, what of we look further than just free stuf, what about functionality and simplicity, what about not only the need of a command line to install an app, oh well
eurodance97 1 year ago

@MrSplademan
MrSplademan 1 year ago
Industrial Light and Magic and Macromedia should of never sold out to Adobe, those programs ran a lot better when they were still being programed by their original programmers.

@josssshua one processes faster. 64 bit can be used for gaming and running powerful applications.
Caribbeanjamjam 1 year ago
@josssshua

55randerson 1 year ago
I've spent years of my life streamlining my (Gentoo) system in such a way that I only have need to move to the mouse very rarely, and I suspect this is the case for at least a significant number of GNU/Linux developers, which probably explains to a large extent the lack of GUI solutions for tasks that can be accomplished better (in the opinion of the GNU/Linux power user) with a CLI.
