Oh what a voice, one of the best bases ever and he had such great stage presence...I prefer baritones doing the Don though but that is just personal taste
I was privileged to see him in this role in the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Great cast with Victoria de los Angeles, Elisabeth Schwartzkopf, Jan Peerce, etc. Siepi was magnificent, & looked great in tights, too. I have his recording of the opera 'Mefistophele' by Boito. I wish I could have seen him in that role, but saw it with Giorgio Tozzi.
@AfroPoli Hahaha! I thought that myself. I much prefer Pinza in this role - Siepi seems to be having trouble with the flexibility this role requires. Plus, I love Pinza's lightspeed version of this. :)
come é nobile!!!
Recent research indicates that it should NOT be fast, in fact the René Jacobs DG with Johannes Weisser is even slower. It has to do with the way the acting is supposed to be carried out by Leporello while DG sings. There has been a lot of talk about it lately.
Such research is sketchy at best, and performance art lives and breathes outside of academia anyway. Whether or not it was slow or fast in Mozart's day is irrelevant to today's audience. The text, in Karl Boehm's opinion, was the best way to gauge the tempo. I've heard everal Don's over the decades, and Siepi's remains one of the finest ever.
Definitely performance varies by taste and ability.
If someone sounds gangbusters singing it slowly - do it slowly. Same if fast works.
This is one of the hardest things ever put to paper/ear to sing. So however it works best for the performer should make the decision.
Nowadays with such weak voices and dodgy techniques - spit the thing out - blame the tempo for the terrible vowels and breathlessness and move on to the rest of the opera.
right on! Research suggests the role was originally written for a singer of dubious vocal quality, perhaps explaining the less lyrical nature of his music, but i would agree, there is more than one way to approach such a role. I've heard it sung live by James Morris, Dmitri Hvorostovksy (sp?) and Ingvar Wixell , enjoying each performance on its own merits.
First of all I'd like to say that Cesare Siepi was one of the greatest basses who ever lived.
In my opinion this aria is conducted too slow, although I know that Furtwängler was one of the greatest conductors in history.
I've posted a performance by Eberhard Wächter which is so far the best performance of this aria which I know, although it's really hard to decide on Siepi or Wächter. In my opinion they're the greatest Don's that ever lived.
I've listened to the Wächter performance. I like it as well, but I still prefer Wächter as Count Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro. With Fischer-Dieskau he's the greatest Count I know.
Check out Samuel Ramey's take on this "Champagne Aria." Don't think it's posted on YT. It's from Vienna 1987 with Karajan conducting and is available on DVD. Ramey's performance blows away all others and he sings it like it's supposed to be sung - FAST. Your mind will change about Siepe and Wachter once you see Ramey.
Ramey performance may be fantastic too. It is a pity that this is not posted on YT. There is the "commendatore" and "da ci darem la mano" scenes from the same recording, that are excellent. However, please do not say "Ramey's performance blows away all others". This dowplays Siepi and Wachter performances; this is ridiculous.
I couldn't manage to put the link on YT. But to listen to Ramey's performance, go to virginmega and listen to extracts of the 1992 CD. Fabulous. Though I don't know if this is really this 1987 performance (or the same performance).
I do have a video of the 1987 performance with Ramey. His voice is fine but he has some small diction problems (especially singing "finch'han dal vino calda la testa")

Siepi in Don Giovanni is at the level of Pavarotti or Caruso: he is one of the very few singers able to electrify people with his magnificent voice.
