I've looked for a long time to find this song, accidentially erased from an audio tape that recorded the "The Beat of the Brass" tv show with this song that I've never found again. Thanks for sharing this and ending my decades long hope to find it.

Your recording sounds much better than the version Rev-Ola used on their CD, which sounds like a 2-3rd or more generation dub. Thank you for taping and preserving it!
I've heard this song before, of course. But Herb's participation gives it a different take! Still, it's sooo nice to hear oldies like this again .. =)
@crosscatch The Archies sounded great as a cartoon group. Ron Dante = fine vocalist yes. But this version sounds like a cartoon group and i don't like it. No offence to Dan. or you.
In what way? Brian's production techniques are still emulated 40 years later. Beach Boys' vocals are unparalleled in the industry. The only think "better" is trumpet, and that is a simple note-by-note approach.
There is a reason why this song was never commercially released!
As a player of the instrument, the trumpet definitely makes this performance superior to my ear. I heard the Beach Boys' rendition in a supermarket least week, and it sounded disappointingly thin and empty by comparison. The seemingly "simple note-by-note approach" is merely indicative of the technical simplicity of the song itself.
This tune isn't so obscure after all as it appears as a bonus track on Cherry Red/RevOla's (UK) "The Merry-Go-Round - Listen Listen: The Definitive Collection".
They left out the whole intro and hugh masekalla said herb albert cant play three notes in succesion without stopping the tape [ the merry go rounds vocals sound fruity they didnt get the back ground vocals right ] .
@spacepatrolman It's easy to pick this apart, but think back 45 years and remember that Herb Alpert has never been promoted as a virtuoso. He isn't. He is, however, a very good performer, an absolute perfectionist as a producer, and a canny businessman who knows the music industry intimately.
It's true that he stopped tape frequently (to the disdain of the other players). He was one of the first 'perfectionist producers' in the business, and he didn't move on until everything was right.
Herb Alpert and the Merry-Go-Round? What's not to LOVE???!!!
