It is a scientifically proven fact that you can't remember anything until you're four years old, however, if you've experienced a traumatic event when you were a child, it would be buried deep in your mind and you would act based on it in the future. That's what Rowling intended to show in the first place, she made a caricature of the whole "make prisoner's life Hell" line of action with the Dementors, and showed how it brought things to disasters. In the end they're Voldemort's allies, how much more obvious did it need to be?

The whole point was a critique of the "prisons are too soft" myth that INCREASES crime.

@freshnessbeyond ok. i havent read the books or anything so i may be wrong. the dementors were rather "hungry" as they feed on bad memories/happiness. harry had so many bad memories that the dementors sensed him...and they were satisfied until lupin used the patronus

the reason the movies now are so much beter than the first two is cause the philosophers stone and the chamber of secrets were directed by Cris Columbus... i think he made the films to happy (if you know what i mean) i much prefer the darker feel to it that Alfonso Cuaron brought to the movies - certainly reflects the threat of lord voldermort more clearly.
