Another really good trick to clear up your mic is to yes put a sock over it. It doesn't remove background noise but it makes it cleaner.

Help!! I'm trying to convert an old mix cassette tape with TsirTech Tape to Digital usb converter (like using an old Sony Walkman) and I have 2 problems. #1) volume is low and #2) there's a constant hiss/hum in the background. What should I try first, remove the noise and then raise the volume? Or vice versa?

@MaineCoon01 Raise volume but make sure it isn't too high (etc loud points in the music aren't loud) then remove background.

Using those settings does help the majority of recordings. But really, different settings work better for different people. You just need to not go crazy with the sliders.

@MyLoveBreeze It should never be that way... if you're doing it wrong you should either get less noise reduction or a weird background noise. Or you are doing it realllllllly wrong.
