There is quite interesting story why this plane even existed, or at least existed in the way we today know as 37 Viggen. The Viggen fighter is a product of a very complicated relation between the US and Sweden.

Sweden promised the US to not build nuclear weapons. In return US promised Sweden full support in the event of a soviet attack. Therefore they were forced to place strategic submarines in the Baltic Sea, to be abele to launch their weapons against Moscow. These submarines were fragile against soviet military forces. Therefore the Swedish air force should protect them. Therefore the 37 Viggen were developed, with American assistance.

Its a little robust plane but nice one ... exept i dont like the trainer/twoseat version , it looks ugly with splitted cockpits , but single seat is one very good plane :)

Om ni kan säga Viggen, varför inte säga Gripen också? JAS är inte ett namn, det är en förkortning för Jakt, Attack och Spaning. Viggen ser grymmare ut än en Gripen. Men det är allt. En Gripen kan smiska en Viggen utan att ens bli svettig.

JAG tycker iallafall om detta flygplan mer än JAS, men den kanske inte är bättre teknikmässigt för den har ju inte lika många avancerade datorer och allt sånt...men Viggen har starkare motor, mindre bromssträcka och ser för övrigt grymmare ut än JAS. Och det där med reversering som Viggen har är ganska unikt.

Not any way better, but it looks much cooler, more evil and it has a better fear factor than the Gripen. In the 70s i think a Viggen locked on to the american SR-71 Blackbird. Nice!

The JA37 has an empty weight of ~10 tons. Hardly twice the weight of an F-16, but perhaps half the weight of an Su-34.

The Viggen weighs as much as TWO F-16:s, and does not outturn them. The Su-34 is hardly old, it entered service in 2007, but at least it weighs only a little less than a Viggen... Not hard to find these numbers on the web, you know.

Very nice! The low pass at the end reminds me of my childhood near Linkoping, where I was treated to high speeed low passes of Viggen. I love that bird!

Same here. The guys from F-16 airbase in Uppsala on occation flew over where i lived. And before that i lived near F-1 and had Drakens making my ears bleed before i was 5 :o)

It´s just a big muscle, too bad it never got the chance to see real action. Meeting a squadron of Viggens would have made anyone nervous... Sorry to say, but planes like this will never apear again. Instead we have to see ugly crap like Eurofighter (only a mother could love it), gayfighter JSF and so on...
