@timothyevanrichard its actually a "guitar harmonic", where he lightly taps the string just as he plucks it to create a very high pitched sound that is a pure note that corresponds to where he hits it on the fret board. no special petal needed

@Hannah191991 - Check out "Road Apples" from 1991 and it's successor "Fully Completely" from 1992 for some of their best work ... not to say that their other stuff isn't as good but these give a good reference point as to their evolution. They first hit it big in Canada with 1989/90 with the album "Up To Here" and quickly built a reputation from energetic live performances with a charismatic lead singer who was kinda 'out there' !
