Piquet was not dissing Senna, I think Senna misunderstood everybody in the room cause he was thinking he was isolated and treated Like Criminal. Senna was under lot of pressure at the time may be thats why he reacted that way, Still Greatest and most passionate race driver in the history of formula one.
With this and the Senna movie you can put together all of what Piquet said... especially "There was a big fuck-up last year" starting his point :) Love the passioned speeches of the Brazilian drivers. The only issue is whether a push-start is legal, and back then it was (and should be now, IMHO... it's stupid and lame that a stall on-track means your race is over - require onboard starters or allow push-starts... and working reverse gears while you're at it).
I'm brazilian and i can cleary hear Senna saying at 0:25 "E aí Nelson, tudo bom?" witch means "hey Nelson, how you doing?" and you must be really stupid to think that was a fight betwen them, Piquet said something obvious and everybody agreed, and Senna got pissed cuz he lost the champ a year later by the same reason...
Why people don't understand that Piquet is justifying (indirectly) what Senna did the previous year ? He is saying that if drivers, when they miss the braking at the chicane, have to go backwards and effectively take the chicane it's dangerous whereas if they are allowed to "cut" it's better. In 1989, Senna was disqualified for having cut the chicane when he chose to continue the race after having hit Prost...
The chicane DQ may have been BS but it does seem like cheating to stay in the car like helping steer it out of the way, then take advantage by bump-starting and going on to win a championship? He had no right to continue racing anyway.
External help is and has always been allowed if a car came to stop in a dangerous place. Senna's car came to a stop on the racing surface, so it was ok to accept the push-start. He was not disqualified for external help, but for cutting the chicane.
That's what this video is about as FISA had never disqualified a driver for cutting a chicane in case of an emergency as showed at Australia 1989's press conference showing footage of the 1981 Austrian GP where two drivers cut the chicane
Senna was MEGA sad because he did NOTHING wrong in Suzuka 1989 and in this briefing, everybody agreed with him. Also, it is EXTREMELY frustrating to know that Prost jumped the start in Suzuka 1989 (LOOK IT UP!!!) and wasn't penalised in ANY way for that... The WHOLE situation could have been avoided. Maybe Senna didn't even know that (even at the time of this briefing).
I agree, gotta consider this in context - and go to see the Senna documentary (which was awesome). Piquet was great here - and I can totally understand Senna's exasperation with the FIA (hence walking out on the meeting)... he's denied a WDC and then here it's like everyone in the room (sans Prost) is agreeing with the view that effectively would have exonerated Senna's actions (and therefore granted him the title), but too late.
If you like this, you must see the documentary Senna. They show the entire context. There's a part missing in the clip of the drivers meeting when Piquet starts to speak where he says that he didn't want to get #$!! like Senna did, then he describes the issue with driving through the Chicane. As others have said, Senna was voicing frustration with his DQ from the previous year for doing something all of the drivers believed was the right thing to do. Everyone, but Prost, of course.
senna simply said, about a trillion times.. "safety safety safety" he was just trying to make 195 mph as safe as he could.... he wasn't a being a "baby" as some of you asrseholes would put it, he was concerned for the safety of EVERY driver and he was passionate about it... nothing more

@Shogo5000 If Senna was a prime donna so was Piquet. Both are REAL Triple Champions. Prost wanted to declare the race winner at the first corner. That sound like a REAL 4-time champ to you? Senna was worried about Schumacher's car which was found with banned electronic aids on it. If your engine gave up as many times as his did you would bitch about the engineers too. The ruling by Balastre and FISA was inconsistent yet you're one of the few people that can't see that.
yes yes senna always felt so unfairly treated.poor baby.and because he was justly disqualified in 89 he run into prost in 90 and deprived him of a fair title.senna was one of the greats but senna fanboys are just so ignorant
@mskidi If we're ignorant let us ask you this: Did he or did he not turn into Senna as Senna got alongside? The move was ambitious, I admit, but not impossible as we've seen a few laps later with Nannini (Nannini held his usual racing line) in the very same corner with no incident. Then we saw it again in Jerez 1997 with Villeneuve and Schumacher. Exact same pass, from equally as far away if not farther, with a different result. Schumacher was DQ'd from the entire season for turning in.
Senna did nothing wrong in the 1989 GP Japanese GP and Piquet is non-directly defending the idea that Senna should not have been disqualified from that race. Piquet is a Legend in motor sport and one of the greatest drivers of all time. Senna not only the best driver who ever lived but one of the great men too... The loss of Ayrton rivals that of Lennon, Lady Di, Steve Irwin, Martin Luther King and all those other great people who's lives were taken before they reached their peak!
The only idiot here was Balestre, who did everything the previous year to let Prost win. Including at the last moment switching the pole position to the green side of the track, when it was agreed before Qualifying with race officials. Piquet was defending Senna's actions the previous year, It's obvious by some of the stupid comments place here that some people haven't got a clue what they are talking about ! @adrianmoore222 As you touched upon Adrianmoor222, senna was disqualified (having received assistance from the marshals) who pushed him backwards instead of forwards out of the chicane in spite of (Sennas gesticulations) Balestre was always against Senna, he didn't like Senna's dominance or his outspokenness in F1 and Balestre's ego was too big to let Senna have the advantage that the pole sitter would enjoy, look it up on here guys. "F1 GP Japan 1991 Ayrton Senna World Champion" see 1m30 +
@speedo202 very true. Balestre even stated in an interview years after his retirement and before his death, that he came down hard on Senna purposely as he favored Prost. He was a thick ignorant man, who brought the position of President of the FIA into disrepute. People though Mosley was bad.... Balestre was a farce of a president.
@adrianmoore222 Quite right, exactly the reason FOCA (Balestre's baby which he was President over) was disolved and the FIA formed as we know it today. Senna (and the rest) muched prefered the lack of a single persons political agenda governing the sport. What a pity he tragically died at Imola in 1994 ... there would be less hearsay about him 'cos he'd be able to speak for himself and many more world titles.
Love Senna, love Berger, and Piquet was defending Senna's actions. Ayrton was just a little sensitive about this for obvious reasons. Senna was on the edge of tears here. :-( He didn't want the robbery of 1989 to be brought up (without the title being rightfully awarded to him retroactively). He left out of protest against the FIA, not the drivers (including Piquet Sr.).
THe real thing is this world was to small for Senna.
The assholes stewards of those years ( same this years ) fucking stupid about what happend the year before. What do they want, a fucking car in the wrong direction and probably hit another one....
Think a few people have missed the point here Senna wasn't disagreeing with piquet it was the fact that he was disqualified the year before for NOT turning his car around but going straight on!! Piquet was mearly pointing out that' that was the safest thing to do! Lots of silly comments calling piquet names shows ignorance to what was actualy happening!!!
if you actually watch the video, piquet sr. was agreeing with senna.
senna wasn't upset by what piquet said, becuase you see at 1:42 he was agreeing with him. he was upset because everyone listened to piquet but they wouldn't listen to senna the year before.
its senna that says "thank you..thank you very much" not ron.. senna is upset about the year before when prost took him out and won the world championship..senna got his car going but went through a chicane he didnt want to spin his car back round facing the race track so he went for the what he thought safe option, but they still disqualified him..he is upset because now the drivers are talking about if we have a crash at that same point can we drive straight on to join the track..
I just love Ron Dennis & his "Thank You...Thank You Very Much..." after upsetting his boy.....despite the fact it was the entire grid of drivers agreeing against him....unanimously...!!!
@Ben4810 they were mostly agreeing with Senna, didn't hear anyone against driving the wrong way on the track. Senna did the right thing also with leaving the meeting. FIA have been stupid people from day .
I cant believe listening to this that the drivers (Piquet) had to argue that point at all!! How stupid of the race organisers to suggest having to turn back off the chicane towards on coming cars if you missed the line in, not suprised Senna was furious, it would have been stupid to turn back the way through that chicane, if you miss the line, then logically you take the safety route through in the direction of the race track as Senna did albeit after a collision in 1989
He lost WC year before and no one give a damn because Balestre was on side of Prost and thats not strange if you now F1 for a 2 decades..but thats not the issue... The myin thing is that Ayrton is right here i would do the same..
last time a brazilian won the drivers championship was senna in 1991 so at best you can say brazilians USED TO BE best. either way i wouldnt say any nationality IS best at formula 1 because it varies too much.
Ayrton was upset, because they took away his 1989 Suzuka win, saying he rejoined the track, by missing the chicane after the Prost collision. Piquet and everyone agreed that for 1990, if you overrun the chicane , you should not go back (against oncoming cars), to retake the chicane, because it's a major safety risk.
Then shortly after that meeting, Ayrton's pole position was moved to the dirty side of the track, after it was agreed to keep it on the clean side. No wonder he had enough by start!
Spa 2008 and Suzuka 1989, politiicians find excuses to disqualify a driver on the brink of the championship. Can anyone see the similaraties and the connection here?
Race officals ASKING people if they agree what happend with senna and prost i find that PERFETIC ayrton lsot the champ that day and they want to ASK people who agree them officals know shit!
"In rejoining the race, Car No.l, driver Senna, avoided the chicane and therefore committed an infringement (Article 56. 1989 FIA Formula One World Championship Regulations) a breach of which shall result in exclusion of the car and driver from the event (Article 63)." Marshall's rule. The rules in this time was dangerous. To re joint you go against the race drivers direction.
Senna is upset with the officials. Piquet is disagreeing with the officials rule that if you miss a chicane you have to turn around and rejoin the track. Even though all the drivers agree with Piquet the officials cant go back on this rule because it would rule Senna's DQ in '89 a farce. Thats why Senna gets up and leaves!!!
From what I can hear Piquet actually says drivers shouldn't be forced to go back around to rejoin a track but simply continue straight forward when there's no trafic because it's safer than going in the opposite direction. He obviously refers to Senna's DQ reason in the 89 race which was that he cut the chicane (ridicilous as he didn't gain any advantage in doing so). So I think Senna misunderstood Piquet, he wasn't dissing him, he was actually making a valid point.
prost might of been beating him the whole year but that move at suzuka in 89 no i dont think it was sennas fault. it was all prost look at the footage senna out breaks him makes it stick and would of gotten the pass if prost did not turn in 20 feet before regular turn in. thus hitting senna prost gives up right away thinks it is ok but senna actually comes threw for the win not to mention passing a car the same way he was going to pass prost. if senna was wrong prost was too.
What a NOOB F1 sucker!!! LMAO...... I'm a "fan" of Senna, not a shameful "fanboy" Senna-sucker like you, stupid. Maybe my comments don't fit with whatever you want, but your quotes don't fit with those of someone who understand something about this... If you had been involved somehow, like I was in F1 (McLaren-Honda-Shell) from 1988 to 1992, you'll regret from your TOTALLY disgraceful and impolite pointless statements. Study and came back again boy....
And we also are missing something important: Prost lead the Championship almost ALL the year, at some stages by 20 points.... While Prost scored in 13/16 races (even He didn't race in Adelaide) Ayrton scored in 7/16... very poor I must say... I don't see "robbery" or that bullshit. For being a robbery, first it has to belong to you, and Ayrton NEVER possesed that 1989 Championship: it was always Prost the one who owned it, fairly and squarely, no doubt: PROST DESERVED CHAMPION. OVER.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Piquet has always been bitchy towards Senna, I don't know if he hit the topic on purpose but actually Ayrton's anger was towards the situation (actually launched by Piquet) more than towards Piquet, or better he felt totally mocked by Piquet and everyone else that agreed.
He had his bitter pill when Balestre stole him the race (and the Championship) and this was too much for him.
This is one of the reasons we loved him, he was human with feelings.
the problem for people who did'nt understand is that Senna was eliminated from the race the year before cause he took an " emergency lane" because he had to, and that year Piquet asked if he could use it and the race director said " of course"... injustice! lol
The problem was that Senna's engine was OUT after the crash. It is not allowed to push start a F1 car. It was not about the emergency lane. I was a big fan of him but sometimes he was just not right. When he believed something it was hard to convince him of the opposite.
Push starts were legal in 1989 bubb. and it certainly was about cutting through the run off area in the middle of the chicane. why do you think this scene would have occurred if it was about something else?? lol
Classic Gerhard Berger entrance. Smacking people over the head as he walk's over to his seat. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't even know them that well. Read his wiki article.
SCchumachr was such a coward he didn't even race 1 teammate in 14 years with equal equipiment. He then ran away from Kimi in 2007. Gay-Schumacher isn't in the same league as drivers like Senna
are you suggesting that kimi raikkonen would have challenged schumacher for a tital in the 2007 ferrari?? hahahahahahahahahahahaha. common man, kimi's a good guy and all but he's not *that* good. i think kimi and massa is a good close fight, probably slightly in the favour of massa though.
Massa was beating gay schumacher in 2006 for a few races. He was ordered to move over when leading in Suzuka. Schumacher is just a coward who never raced his teammate. Alonso beating him in a slower car put him in to retirement.
i'm not sure if you watched that video or not fella... senna was clearly alongside prost, and prost clearly turned straight into him, gave him no room. you'll notice how senna is right on the edge of the track, while prost has half the width to his left. Also think about which driver would benefit from them both being out of the race. It was an ambitious move by senna, he probably would have overshot and got taken back by prost, but prost saw his opportunity to win the championship and took it.
Totally right testacorsa150: I'm a big fan of Senna but not a "noob fanboy", Prost outdrove him from start up to lap 40, by that lap Alain was just controlling his pace and making Ayrton worn his tyres. The manouvre Ayrton did was absolutely at the limit, Prost closed the door (He was ahead after all) and all over: 50/50% to blame for each other. Then Ayrton was CORRECTLY DSQ since the 2nd push-start was inside the safety place, not inside the track, so no push-starts allowed there...
Look at the figures my friend testacorsa150. Do you see "robbery", "french complots", etc??? Just whines, cries, and bullshit, don't you think??? Prost owned Ayrton in 14/16 races of the season. Come on! Be serious people! Nobody can win a championship scoring in 7/16 races, VERY POOR. I'm fan of Senna but I'm not a noob F1 sucker! The Professor ruled clearly in 1989, and won a TOTALLY DESERVED Title. And Ayrton was a totally deserved RUNNER UP. Prost(76)vsSenna(60)points. OVER!!!!
Prost was a calculating cheat he turned in on Senna as the Video shows. Senna was not whinning he was sick of the politics in F1 regarding safty issues which Ayrton raised in 1989 in which the F1 body did not listen until it was raised again. they were a joke anyone would of been pissed and walked out when they addressed the same issues that that occured in 1989 after it was raised by someone else other than senna. Wankers
yea well what about Sennas 4 mechanical failures IN A ROW. i cant wait to hear this. I just watched all 89 what about yourself do you go upon the media? because clearly you havent watched 89 and should not talk. Senna had 4 failures in a row that won Prost the champ. LMAO you were part of F1 were ya lmao that makes me laugh man GIVE IT UP GET A LIFE AND QUIT LYING. people agree with me more then you.are you not the same guy that thinks Alonso is over rated i guess thats why he was the best of 08
Senna is still hurt by how he was disqualified in 1989. He was staging a spectacular comeback in 89 winning at Spain, Belgium and Germany before that. He would have felt very let down by this episode.
An interesting view of what is happening inside the closed world of F1 Racing...although not current, I could imagine the same thing with the current drivers
Nelson was talking about how if somebody overshot the chicane before the start/finish straight, the stewards should stop you and let you proceed through the runoff area and continue the race versus having to turn around on the track and face oncoming traffic that could also overshoot the chicane and hit you head on. Senna became mad because the same thing happened to him in '89 and he was disqualified for continuing the race by proceeding through the runoff area.
No it wasn't. In '89 Prost had the line, it was his corner and Senna went for a gap that wasn't there. It was Senna who caused the incident, not Prost.
The gap was there and Senna had the inside line. He did the exact same move on Nannini just later but Nannini didn't turn into Senna like Prost did. Find the video from the helicam and you'll clearly see that Prost starts turning way too early that'd he'd go over the grass at the apex or straight over the kerb and damage the car. He admitted he shut the door.
thats exactly it europa..Senna was disqualified for
'missing the chicane' (stewards had to think of something in order for Prost to get the Championship I guess)after Prost turned in on him. Senna should have been Champion that year..It was a very similar incident to Schumacher vs Hill in '94 and Villeneuve in '97..
What pissed Senna off was the fact that there was a discussion, everyone agreed, and a decision was made according the agreement. What happened in 89 was basically the oposite. Why didn´t they discuss the 89 incident like they did in this briefing?
Don't wanna get into arguments, to each their own.
Anyway, why can't Senna just stay during the briefing? Sure Piquet's comment was an indirect attack against Senna, but WTF? Just stick it out! Piquet never played a role for the '90-title and if I was Senna I wouldn't give a damn about what he said, or just give him a cocky reply. But he acts like a little girl, "Boohoo, I can't take this anymore, I'm going home!"
You're not understanding the conversation. Senna is upset because the previous year, he was disqualified from winning a race for doing what everyone of the other drivers is now agreeing to be the correct thing for the stewards to allow. The previous year, no one sided with Ayrton and Prost was handed the championship by the French run F1.
Basically what he sad was that cars should be directed back onto the track by the marshalls after they got off track so that a car returning onto the track doesn't run into traffic.
Sounds sensible. Senna acts like a twat once again. And then he knocked off Prost for the title. What a bastard.
You are a fucking retard man. The year before Senna went off at the 1st corner, drove down the runoff track and came back to win the race, only to be disqualified. So this is the next year, and piquet says he thinks if someone goes off at turn 1, they should be allowed to use the run off track like Senna did and continue racing, instead of being forced to turn around against traffic. Senna is just angry that all the drivers agree but F1 organization did nothing.
This was 1990. This was the year when Senna drove Prost off the track. In 1989, on lap 46, at turn 15, Senna attempted a pass on Prost, who was leading the race and the championship by twelve points. Neither driver was willing to yield and they both went off. Prost retired and Senna was helped back on to the track and eventually won the race. However, Senna was disqualified after the race for missing the chicane on lap 46.
the safest thing is, if you miss a chicane the stewards stop you, when there is no traffic , they'll let you go. If you have to turn around and go backwards against another car, that's dangerous because when another car comes and miss also he'd go forward to you (?)
Piquet was not dissing Senna, I think Senna misunderstood everybody in the room cause he was thinking he was isolated and treated Like Criminal.

To re joint you go against the race drivers direction.
joseavs 3 years ago
Senna is upset with the officials. Piquet is disagreeing with the officials rule that if you miss a chicane you have to turn around and rejoin the track. Even though all the drivers agree with Piquet the officials cant go back on this rule because it would rule Senna's DQ in '89 a farce. Thats why Senna gets up and leaves!!!
coolmus1 3 years ago 6
From what I can hear Piquet actually says drivers shouldn't be forced to go back around to rejoin a track but simply continue straight forward when there's no trafic because it's safer than going in the opposite direction. He obviously refers to Senna's DQ reason in the 89 race which was that he cut the chicane (ridicilous as he didn't gain any advantage in doing so). So I think Senna misunderstood Piquet, he wasn't dissing him, he was actually making a valid point.
hristoitchov 3 years ago
I don't think he was pissed with Piquet, he was pissed with the officials.

This is one of the reasons we loved him, he was human with feelings.

the problem for people who did'nt understand is that Senna was eliminated from the race the year before cause he took an " emergency lane" because he had to, and that year Piquet asked if he could use it and the race director said " of course"... injustice! lol
mouloudo 3 years ago
The problem was that Senna's engine was OUT after the crash. It is not allowed to push start a F1 car. It was not about the emergency lane. I was a big fan of him but sometimes he was just not right. When he believed something it was hard to convince him of the opposite.
buggable 3 years ago 5
Push starts were legal in 1989 bubb. and it certainly was about cutting through the run off area in the middle of the chicane. why do you think this scene would have occurred if it was about something else?? lol

i'm not sure if you watched that video or not fella... senna was clearly alongside prost, and prost clearly turned straight into him, gave him no room. you'll notice how senna is right on the edge of the track, while prost has half the width to his left. Also think about which driver would benefit from them both being out of the race. It was an ambitious move by senna, he probably would have overshot and got taken back by prost, but prost saw his opportunity to win the championship and took it.
rodneystar 3 years ago 3
Ofcourse I have seen the clip boy :-)
Clearly you are a fan of Senna, and so am I, but he brought this on himself.
To have the right to the corner, you have to be ahead, and Senna wasn´t.
It was, as James (co-commentater)said, "an act of desperation".
I have uploaded 2 clips for you.
1 of the collision, and 1 of the replay shown later during the race.
In the replay you can clearly see that Senna was not ahead.
"1989 Suzuka GP - Senna vs. Prost 1of2" and 2of2.
Watch (learn) & enjoy!
testacorsa150 3 years ago 2
Totally right testacorsa150: I'm a big fan of Senna but not a "noob fanboy", Prost outdrove him from start up to lap 40, by that lap Alain was just controlling his pace and making Ayrton worn his tyres. The manouvre Ayrton did was absolutely at the limit, Prost closed the door (He was ahead after all) and all over: 50/50% to blame for each other. Then Ayrton was CORRECTLY DSQ since the 2nd push-start was inside the safety place, not inside the track, so no push-starts allowed there...

Nelson was talking about how if somebody overshot the chicane before the start/finish straight, the stewards should stop you and let you proceed through the runoff area and continue the race versus having to turn around on the track and face oncoming traffic that could also overshoot the chicane and hit you head on. Senna became mad because the same thing happened to him in '89 and he was disqualified for continuing the race by proceeding through the runoff area.
bjsdoc 4 years ago
No it wasn't. In '89 Prost had the line, it was his corner and Senna went for a gap that wasn't there. It was Senna who caused the incident, not Prost.
PapaChipi 5 years ago

JACoz 5 years ago
What pissed Senna off was the fact that there was a discussion, everyone agreed, and a decision was made according the agreement. What happened in 89 was basically the oposite. Why didn´t they discuss the 89 incident like they did in this briefing?
meirelles2006 5 years ago 2
Don't wanna get into arguments, to each their own.
Anyway, why can't Senna just stay during the briefing? Sure Piquet's comment was an indirect attack against Senna, but WTF? Just stick it out! Piquet never played a role for the '90-title and if I was Senna I wouldn't give a damn about what he said, or just give him a cocky reply. But he acts like a little girl, "Boohoo, I can't take this anymore, I'm going home!"
Nice clip BTW.
PapaChipi 5 years ago
everybody has it's bad moments in life..Maybe it was to much for him at that very moment. I wish I had the whole briefing..
Slayer1989 5 years ago
You're not understanding the conversation. Senna is upset because the previous year, he was disqualified from winning a race for doing what everyone of the other drivers is now agreeing to be the correct thing for the stewards to allow. The previous year, no one sided with Ayrton and Prost was handed the championship by the French run F1.
excepteuropa1 5 years ago 2
Piquet's not attacking Senna, actually, Senna agrees with Piquet.
eduardobenvenuti 5 years ago 3
Basically what he sad was that cars should be directed back onto the track by the marshalls after they got off track so that a car returning onto the track doesn't run into traffic.
Sounds sensible. Senna acts like a twat once again. And then he knocked off Prost for the title. What a bastard.
PapaChipi 5 years ago
true, I disagree with your opinion about Senna but sometimes he acts like he's god indeed, but that Senna and I like that
Slayer1989 5 years ago
You are a fucking retard man. The year before Senna went off at the 1st corner, drove down the runoff track and came back to win the race, only to be disqualified. So this is the next year, and piquet says he thinks if someone goes off at turn 1, they should be allowed to use the run off track like Senna did and continue racing, instead of being forced to turn around against traffic. Senna is just angry that all the drivers agree but F1 organization did nothing.
phishtailer 4 years ago
This was 1990. This was the year when Senna drove Prost off the track. In 1989, on lap 46, at turn 15, Senna attempted a pass on Prost, who was leading the race and the championship by twelve points. Neither driver was willing to yield and they both went off. Prost retired and Senna was helped back on to the track and eventually won the race. However, Senna was disqualified after the race for missing the chicane on lap 46.
69yono 4 years ago 2
the safest thing is, if you miss a chicane the stewards stop you, when there is no traffic , they'll let you go. If you have to turn around and go backwards against another car, that's dangerous because when another car comes and miss also he'd go forward to you (?)
