  • This is my faovirte song in the world! I practically came out of the womb singing this song! I could literally listen to it ALL DAY! I love it! and i love the Happy Goodmans! I'm 16 and I sing all their songs to honor the Lord and to keep the memory of the Happy Goodmans alive. Check out my vids if you want to. If you like them, then spread the word so that they will become more well known. Thanks so much!

  • They were awesome! And Rusty's voice was so rich with so much range! He was a great singer!

  • This was on an album that my mom had. I hated it then. I love it now, and can't find it on CD. Love the Goodmans.

  • Many, many imitators, but NONE could match this original. Thanks for posting.

  • 'TWAS THE 70'S I WAS THERE

  • Whew, some mighty fine singing.

  • I think this was the PBS special during their telethon month way back then.

  • I heard Howard and Vestal explain the meaning behind this song. They said there was an elderly gentleman at the church they attended who would testify at each and every service. Each testimony would conclude, "and I wouldn't take nothing for my journey now!" Vestal said that she told Rusty to write a song with that line in it and that is how the song came about. Rusty and some other gentleman wrote it in 1964, because one old Saint declared it in his testimony.

  • this was filmed in 1977. it still sounds great after 33 years.

  • awesome!

  • Cold chills!

  • Hallelujah! This is the Gospel I grew up on and it has sustained me for 55 years. I used to sing with these guys and SO many more in the 60's.We used to have singing conventions all over. What a wonderful day, pouring out your RADIO! Vidett Polk used to head up alot of these meeting! This was singing, this was Gospel and just as good today as it was then! What a Blessing to find these videos! Praise God! Who cares who sang the deepest?

  • Vestal changed in appearance over the years, she improved with age, her voice just kept getting better and better, she was definitely one of a kind, I listen to the Goodmans daily, especially Vestal, she's still the Best, she's still Queen of Gospel Music

  • Great, great song,,,,always puts a huge big, big, big smile on my face and my heartaches are gone....the Goodmans were choosen and have touched me through their songs...I believe as Vestal and Dotty Rambo told me, wait till I am in heaven to really see the "Holy Hills " and also where I'll see the sainted billions and all my loved ones too !!!

  • Hey, was that presenter Ernie Ford? Nothing like listening to the old timers. Love them!!!!!!! Love them!!!!!!

  • @sylvia1238 Yes indeed. Tennessee Ernie himself.

  • 'Weeeeellll didja enjoy 'em tonight?' Yes--we'll enjoy them for all our lives . . .

  • thank you for this.

  • For the past few days I have not been able to get this song out of my mind.

It must be someone up there telling me they are still in control and watching over us all.

  • And what's with that afro?!

  • well-it was the 70s. lol

  • Where's Vestal's beehive?

  • probably in her suitcase LOL

  • I think the beehive is coming bak. Have you seen "Doubting Thomas"? The math teacher in the movie has a beehive.

  • she did have a very impressive beehive LOL

  • @GVFans Vestal had a heart attack thats why they had Johnny Cook come and sing in her place. Because of that he had to cut her hair and just kept it short from then on

  • @RonsGurl82488 Actually, she always kept her hair short because she liked it but being from a time and church where women kept their hair long she wore a wig. And Johnny Cook came to sing because she'd been diagnosed with throat cancer and the doctors said she would never sing again but God healed her. This can all be read in her 1999 autobiography 'Vestal! Lord I Wouldn't Take Nothin' for My Journey Now'

  • God is coming back and this should reach out to those who are out in sin. God Bless

  • is rusty howards brother or son? great song, thanks.

  • rusty was his brother

  • He's a brother.

  • What a journey the "Happy Goodman's" had during thier fifty plus years in the Gospel music ministry..I am glad thier stayed on that magnificent journey! I love all of you Goodman's !!

  • This is an oldie! Love it! Thanks for sharing!

  • I watched this performance on TV and fell in love with the Goodmans.

  • Did they sing anything else on this program?

  • I just love The Goodmans been looking for a long time for this TV show and so I just downloaded it to my computer and will put on a dvd thank you so much for posting this ...God Love you .

  • I remember the night this show was on! I as up stairs and heard them on the T.V. I like to have broke a leg getting down to see them.

Thanks for all the memorys Vestal, Howard, Rusty, and Sam...See ya soon....

  • Oh...these songs take me back to when I was little. My dad pastored a Pentecostal church. I am no longer in church, but I just keep coming back to the music!

  • rose, what have you taken in place of your journey, i say that in love without condemnation, for we have all sinned, i am cheif as paul said. get back on fire for the lord is coming soon, God bless you

  • I hear these arguments all the time. Both sides are guilty of not being open to each other. Young people (Like myself) can cast off this type of music as old and washed up and older people can look at contemporary and any gospel music not made after a certain date and cast it off. There is certainly something called anointing and it makes all the difference. Fortunately i love both types as long as the song and singer has the anointing.

  • I know I hear that all the time..but to be quite honest as a young person I very STRONGLY dislike the so called "Christian" rap or rock..I personally don't think it has ANY anointing. Now the contemporary worship music id fine. But I'd prefer some good old Happy Goodmans anytime

  • Amen! there is nothing better then this OLD time southern gospel music! I don't think there is anything wrong with contempary but i don't listen to it! Because nothing beats old time southern gospel! The Pentecostal Holiness church i was raised in only sung old time songs, they didnt believe in contempary and that is why i am the way i am! lol Now i LOVE The Singing Cookes they are my FAVORITE! And im only 15 years old so there are still some young people out there listening to the good music!

  • Amen! I go to a Pentecostal church but most of the younger people don't like this old stuf but I love it!

  • this is in 1968 i think.

  • 1977 I believe. At least that's the date given on the infamous video introduction they used at on the Gaither Homecoming concerts.

  • Tennessee Ernie Ford knew the best when he saw or heard it. A little lady used to utter that phrase to Rusty - and the song was born. Some songs are just anointed for all time. This may be the best remaining live recording of this song by the Goodmans! WOW!

  • Great music and great message

  • They're all in Heaven now, singing as loud as they can. I can'g wait to hear them again when I get there.

  • Thank God for the pure pleasure of praise to Him that the Happy Goodmans have given to us! Probably my favorite Goodman song.. oh, that Vestal! All sorely missed.

  • This is the greatest of the Goodmans' songs, and this video is wonderful! The kids these days need to be listening to this instead of that foolish "contemporary" garbage!

  • that's not a fair statement. it's all good.

  • Amen, bus08001!

  • It is a very fair statement..I mean I'm young and all my friends listen to the so called "christian rap and rock"..and I'm sorry but there is far more anointing in this than in any contemporary songs! but thats just my opinion! :)

  • THAT IS SO TRUE. My family has been singing for a long time, from records to CDs and my dad is an Assembly of God Pastor and I am the pianist at the church I attend, SO I KNOW what is annointed and what the Holy Spirit moves in. BUT there is no reason for arguing...people can't chang people, ONLY GOD CAN.

  • Even the contemporary hymns are praising Jesus. I say as long as we can reach the children let the hymns continue, no matter what. I have not heard a song praising our Lord that I don't like, by the way I'm no young one,if it is praising Jesus bring it on.

  • There's something called "anoinniting", and

when that is present the message cuts through.Without it, the song is just another poem set to music. AND, a lot of song are not God inspired, just well turned phrases that rhyme, without a lot of substance, and therefore are "dead",(no anoinniting).

  • Yes, I know people that think just because it talks about God it's most christian song ever...certainly NOT true

  • GREAT THE BEST MORE VESTALGOODMAN

  • absolutely fantastic, this is my favorite Goodman family song, what awesome voices and people they were!

  • This is one of the best things I've ever seen on YouTube. What I wouldn't do for a time machine to go back to this more decent, civilized, Christian era...

  • Amen!!!

  • be my guest. God needs workers here, so i'll stay.

  • that is the truth. turn the radio on a gopel station if you can find one and you want here good ole gospel music like this and many more. thank god we have it on you tube.

  • What powerful voices.

  • The Happy Goodman Family Is my All Time Favorite Group & Rusty Is My Favorite Male Singer of All Time

  • I love the Goodmans, and especially this rendition of this song!!

  • AMEN! As the words to the song say; Ive stumbled in the past and its humbled me; but no matter how far I fall hes always been there to pick me up. Thank You lord for the music these people gave.

  • was raised up listening to the Goodmans. Its great to see them..Wow

  • This is one of my favorite songs from the Goodmans. Thank God for the music they left behind!

  • I love the Happy Goodmans. This video is a classic that will live on forever.
