The problem only exists on North American built Toyotas ...always make sure when you buy a Toyota that the first digit of the VIN is a J (built in japan) to get true Toyota quality. Even North American Toyotas are way higher quality than any of the "domestics" (built with mostly parts from China and Mexico) . We drive a 2006 Toyota Avalon that often accelerates rapidly while using the cruise control. The car does not go out of control, it just rapidly accelerates to reach the set speed on the cruise control. It's only a jerky ride,

In order for the system to work, each sensor in a pair has to match. If they don't match in the proper way, an on-board computer immediately senses a problem and the engine power is reduced to idle or it's shut off altogether.

Just doesn't make sense to take a malfunctioning car on the road which could run down the mom in the crosswalk with baby in stroller, or little kid riding a bike, just to make a point. I think he could have made his point in the Toyota dealer parking lot. Had he killed somebody by knowingly taking a car like that on the road, he would have shared a large chunk of the blame. It's just not responsible and unfair to other motorists and pedestrians.

The problem only exists on North American built Toyotas ...always make sure when you buy a Toyota that the first digit of the VIN is a J (built in japan) to get true Toyota quality. Even North American Toyotas are way higher quality than any of the "domestics" (built with mostly parts from China and Mexico) . When Toyota has the smallest glitch the media jumps all over it and blows it out of proportion. If they did the same with GM Ford and Chrysler that would be a very thick newspaper

Defective brakes. Electronic power train defects. Defective steering.

It has been established that recalls should have occurred in 2007 as state Farm insurance notified the NHSTA that the amount of disproportionate claims involving Toyotas, and had raised their premiums accordingly. Many documented problems were brought to Toyota's attention but the NHSTA rolled over an gave Toyota a pass!
