Man, you are the kind of drummer that is a real treat to watch and learn from. You make it look so effortless and smooth and it sounds so crisp and tight. Been working these exercises for a few weeks now and it is starting to flow smoother every day. Thanks a lot for the excellent tutorials, you are very, very good!
Another great video, this will be a good exercise to try-out. I've recently been incorporating para-para diddles into the whole set exercise. The "inverted" sounds like a good exercise to try too, especially with the cowbell, Thanks...
Your playing is good man, just keep doin what your doin. Keep practising rudiments, try and learn something new every week. I just practise stuff i see on TV or YT and licks I hear on CDs, I try and play everything as cleanly as possible to a click, and be honest with yourself when its untidy. All of my favourite drummers, play the simplest things extremely well, so I try and listen to every stroke, be dynamic, but controlled.
I'm starting also to enjoy the simplest grooves, I'm kind of tired of all the odd drumming.. in fact I cannot play a simple 4/4 for a long time without messing up a little. And that is so hard to do. All of the sudden the easy AC/DC song becomes more difficult than a Dream Theater song.
Thanks again for the advice Dean! Greetings from Italy! :)
a friend of mine who studied drumming in LA said the top drummers use to spend a lot of time in the practise rooms at the school playing the same grooves over and over, no fills, just making every nuance perfect with a click. As gigging drummers, that's 90% of what our job is. Cheers from Aus : )
well your probly be playing as 16ths so they each parradidle will last for two quater notes, if you want to keep the backbeat on two and four, best of starting the praradiddles on 1 or 3.
Hey man ur awesome i was looking all over for a paradiddle groove to help me playing and i found it here thx so much for this video my drummings improved so much i carnt thank you enough thx man and ur a awesome drummer
I can play paradiddles pretty well in a groove but if I am just practicing them on a snare it all goes horribly wrong...I think it's got to do with hearing the different accents of the sticks.
It's weird!
BTW, I am loving this video and your kit sounds great. Nice to have some proper drum videos on YT.
I know what u mean, u tend to have to feel it, rather than listen. I also find playing paradiddles along to music helps, makes it easier to hear what they're doing. Thanks for the comment, also see dimsunk, toddwalkerdrumstudio, joecrabtree, if you want some handy videos.
Good to see you using our favourite family the "Paradidle family"
I probably play paradiddles way too much, but it is always nice to hear how other drummers use them, so it gives you ideas of how to bore people even more lol ; D
Nice playing btw, this has inspired me to do a vid about my use of paradiddles, what do you think mate?
Paradiddles boring? Never! I personally have a love hate relationship with them, I love the sound of them but I hate plying them.
yes, definately, make a vid, there's not a lot of 'creative' stuff about paradiddles, a lot of it is just practise pad or snare drum based. I'm also gonna make a couple more about it, probably talk about fills.
My paradiddle fills are generally basic tom fills or predominantly snare fills with accents on the toms or cymbals.
That would be a good video to see.
And yeah tell me about the love hate thing with paradiddles. I think because they are such a core rudiment, they tend to get over used, and then we just "go through the motions" rather than enjoying them.
yeah, I'm the same with tom accents. But i was thinking more of incorporating them with double strokes and kick doubles within some fill ideas. A lot of these cool fill ideas (jojo mayer, weckyl, vinnie) are also based around displacing the feel first, usually by an 8th note, kick 1+, snr 2+ etc, vinnie especially. I can mess with it, but nowhere near their level of understanding, some of what they do is way beyond my comprehension, some of it seems like a 'black art' with no explanation. ha!:0
Nice dynamic range on the left hand. I've played too much rock n'roll lately and lost the stick control to do that. But I'm definitely bookmarking this for later practice. Thanks!
You're probably using them without even knowing. I've found once u get the initial RLLR part of the inverted paradiddle happenin, it becomes comfortable to play the two strokes as 'doubles', and you dont need to think about the sticking.
