Thank you so much for this! I've loved this poem all my life, and have been looking for a good tune for decades. There are lots of tunes for it out there, but the others don't sound very natural. I used to sing it to my kids, thirty years ago, to a tune I got from a completely different song. But I like this one better.
This is a childhood favorite of mine. I would listen to it several times in a row at bedtime on my little 45 rpm phonograph.
I would love to find even just the audio of the cover that the Doobie Brothers did of this - I think it was '81 or '82. It was right close to my senior year of high school.
I had this poem as an illustrated story book. It was my favorite when I was little. I asked my parents about what happened to the book but the don't remember sadly.
I had honestly never heard the song version of this before but it is absolutly beautiful! Thank you for posting it!
I'd love to find the sheet music for this. It sounds like they use a harp in the recording and ...lo and behold I play one. i suck at arranging my own music though so I must find this somewhere!
Alas, it looks like "Bedtime Stories and Lullabies" is a pretty rare album, but at least I now know what I'm looking for. It's too bad the album never came out on CD, (AFAIK) but you can't have everything. :)
Thank you for the reply. I was entirely unaware that Wendy Craig had ever *done* albums of stories and lullabies for children, but it seems she has at least two such albums out ("Bedtime Stories" and "Tales of Beatrix Potter"). Good stuff!
me2 hehe, my grandmother used to read this to me.. just hearing it i can close my eyes and feel the tightly tucked in sheets and her soft voice. *sigh* brings tears to my eyes hearing this. also a story i wish i knew the name of- about a jay bird.. or blue bird.. there was a drawr of books in that spare room.. i always picked the same 2, this story or the bird one. miss u grandma :(
Thank you so very much for this hauntingly beautiful song--we are reading the poem by Eugene Field for our lesson tomorrow--I can't wait for my boys to see your video. This is GOLDEN! Thank you! MERCI!
I remember having a cassette tape when I was real little and it had lullabies on it and after I was asleep my parents would put the tape on in case I woke up I could fall back asleep. And this song was on it and was so comforting as a wee one.
I had a similar cassette! And my mum would do the same thing. I wish that I could find the version of this song that was on there! It was more of an acoustic version and the woman sang it a little faster. Wow... this really takes me back.
Sorry for being late with the comment, this is just the most lovely video ever! And how you found all the pics to go with it, its better than one could have ever imagined. Thank you so much! I wonder if one could sum up your videos and put them on a DVD? Will try!
I was so intrigued by this I've hunted down a recording of the same... look out for update when it arrives through the post! Never heard of Cass Elliot before, she really does have an absolutely amazing voice. Can't wait!
My mom used to sing this too me to fall asleep. I wish she still sang to me I muss being little

How has nobody uploaded the part from Dennis the Menace where Mrs. Wilson tells him the poem as a bedtime story? I like how she tells it.

@MsTommyknocker I know what you mean, I loved the way Mrs. Wilson told it. Her way and accent were just perfect.

My mother would play this to me when I was a youngster to send me to sleep. She must of played it a lot because it stuck in my head even to this day.

Hello,
Can you please tell me: is this the same Wendy Craig from "Butterflies?"
And is this recording off an LP? I'd be grateful if you could tell me the title as I still have my turntable. :)
CordlessBungeeJumper 3 years ago
Yup, sure is, same Wendy Craig. The LP is called 'Bedtime Stories and Lullabies', 1973. It as hot off the press when I was listening to it! :)

This poem sounds great sung. I have a recording of this sung by a music student and a teacher at my school.
