NO HATE...This comment is just a response. First, I am BLACK and I am Pagan. I am sure you know that the MAJORITY of black in the U.S. are Christian. Christianity preaches hatred against homosexuals everyday. JUST LIKE WHITE PEOPLE, blacks are subjected to that brain washing by the Christian Church all day, everyday.

BTW, I am NOT a homophobe. My spiritualist minister is GAY. I have plenty gay friends, and I fight for their rights !

To single black people out is UNFAIR and wrong.

What comes to my mind is it's a kind of integration/assimilation - when one marginilized group has fought their way to acceptance, they cement their identity as part of the group by fighting against the next outsider group to come along.

It's the human mentality of "Us vs Them", and when the boundaries are moved there's a rush to restrengthen them and reesablish the status quo.

Hi quanyin81, I might have to post more than one text responses to this issue. To understand the reason why Black homophobia exists, means to understand the history behind it. As a black Lesbian, the reason why many (not all) blacks have homophobic tendencies is because many black people are still colonized...yes still colonized under a Eurocentric institution--Christianity. This religion has a strong grip on black people.

There is overwhelming scientific evidence that sexuality is biological and NOT a matter of choice, just like you have no control over what foods you like the taste of and which ones you don't. You can't simply 'choose' to like the flavor of onions if you really don't.

Wait a minute, tai...you just said nature makes mistakes but it's natural for a man to be with a female. That's a total contradiction. You see homosexuality amongst animals all the time. There are two male penguins in the San Francisco zoo that have been living together and showing courting behavior towards each other for years now. I'm an athiest ( I rather call my self a naturalist). I get shit an all the time for having a better understanding of the world thew science and nature threw observation. I think its flattering when anyone winks at me whatever sex they may be. If its another woman I just say that I dont swing that way but thanks for the compliment...I dont understand the fear that people have for homosexual people. Many of them are much kinder to everyone because of the treatment they have gone through and I would rather be friends with a gay person that is comfortable in their own skin, than a straight person that is always trying to prove something to me.

It's because blacks are a minority. Homosexuals are rare in black families. They probably see this as a weakness, and I'm not stereotyping here but a decent chunk of Mormonism, Jehovah's witnesses and Baptist churches are Black and we only need to look at the beliefs of these Churches and recent events to see that they really don't accept homosexuality.

Now for the High Priest, I'm with you, I don't get. The Charge of The Goddess, pretty clear on sexuality.

Just speaking statistically, if you look at the statistics from the Prop 8 votes, the black vote was overwhelmingly in favor of banning gay marriage. I'm not saying that PROVES anything, but it does support what you are describing. Oh, by the way, I think there was a similar trend for Latinos, but it wasn't as strong. Interestingly, what I have read says that Caucasians were much more open to gay marriage than these other two groups. Interesting. But unfortunate.

I've dated a couple black guys and this is how it was explained to me. It has to do with racism and religion. The religious part is obvious. The racist part goes to many of them seeing homosexuality as a "white" thing. Not only do they see it as sinful they see it as a betrayal of their race when a black person is gay. It also gives them a group to work out their frustration out on. A group that is acceptable to hate in the publics view and is seen as mostly white.

This is why I love to see black gay characters on television, such as Lafayette on True Blood. :-) He is amazing just the way he is, even though he is flawed (but aren't we all?). One of my favorite Lafayette moments was when he was getting some flack for being gay at the bar, so he walked out of the kitchen and confronted the patrons. Told them to eat the "AIDS burger" or get out, basically. But it was better than that, what he said. LOL. Can't remember, exactly. :-)
