  • You said that you had maxillary impaction, do you mean that they reduced the length of your maxilla? Cause that's what I'm having done (about 5mm) and I'm really worried about what happens to the excess skin. Like the corner of your mouth being way to lower then your teeth.

In your opinion did your skin and facial muscles adapt?

  • @nameYUnoavailable Hi! Yes, I had a maxillary impaction - I think they took off probably between 3-5 mm. It was good for me because my lips never could comfortably close over my teeth (they still don't fully, but it's much better now!). I think my top lip is definitely in a different place, but I certainly don't feel like my lips sit below a normal place on my face. My skin and muscles have adapted with no problems! The shape of my lips are different but I still like how I look. Ask away :)

  • I just had a maxillary impaction 3 days ago... and I have a hard time swallowing pills and I haven't been taking my antibiotics. Do you think it's okay? I brush my teeth like 4 times a day now and rinse my mouth with salt water... not taking my antibiotics won't cause an infection will it? :S

  • @hotchnerreid The best thing to do is of course to ask your surgeon/doctor! I didn't have any pills to take when I had mine, but I did have some liquid medication (mostly pain relief) and some antibiotic mouth rinse. It's good that you are keeping your mouth super clean - remember to be gentle so you don't pull your stitches out! I think you should try to get some liquid medication if you're having trouble swallowing pills.

  • @DeeConn thanks for the tip! :) I can barely even swallow water, I don't know why they'd give me a giant pill. Also, do you know how long it usually takes for the stitches to go away?

  • @hotchnerreid I didn't really swallow much - I had a large syringe that I pretty much just squirted down my throat, so make sure you get one of those! I think my stitches started coming out around the 1 month mark.

  • @perfekteme I feel great now, and I'm very happy with the outcome of the procedure. My advice is: it won't look exactly as you imagined it would, but it will be better than before. Make sure you are completely ready to permanently change your face before you get it done. I was lucky that my parents paid for my surgery - it was quite expensive, but I think it has been worth it for me.

  • @perfekteme Yes, I did get a procedure on my chin, but it's not an implant - it's what is called a "sliding genioplasty"

  • Does it Hurt so bad ????.... whoah just by saying it , i t's like your really having a really painful time ...

  • OHIP covered my son's surgery. We had to kick in about 1900$. But it's not about that, we have employer's coverage anyway. It's about seeing my son in pain! I hate it! Plus, the diet restrictions.. geezsh! NO parent EVER likes to see their child suffering. I so hope he recuperates fine, and he's happy with the result.

  • @ralphyization Wow, do you live in Canada? We couldn't get mine covered. The pain is worth it, let him know!

  • @DeeConn Most of it was covered. My husband and I had to pay 1900.$, but our employer's insurance should cover most of that. He seems a little better day by day. It must suck with that diet, though.....

  • Did you not get a splint?

  • @jp0084 No, I didn't, and I was really grateful! I thought I was going to have to need one when they thought I was getting my top jaw cut into three pieces to fix, but they ended up leaving it in one piece. Whew. I hear the splint is a royal pain.

  • i just had the lower jaw osteotomy done yesterday morning [5:15 am - so early!] and i wanna say, i'm very thankful for your videos. i had to go without pain meds until i got home so it was intense for awhile but they did a great job. and they did great for you too, i can see beyond the swelling. anyway, it was nice to know what i was heading into!

  • @enyardica78 I'm glad the videos helped so much! I've tried to upload some more of me now (1 year later) but I'm having some problems with YouTube. Hopefully those will be up soon so you can see what you have to look forward to - it's all up from here :)

  • I'm getting this operation done on the 27th... Do you think it's realistic to think you can go back to work 1 week after?

  • @theprince08853 Are you getting exactly the same surgery as I had? Both jaws? If yes, I would say that's unrealistic - two weeks would be better. If you're getting just the lower jaw, I think you'd be OK in a week :) I went back to school after a month and still had some speech problems and low energy!

  • @DeeConn Yup it's both Jaws, I think the top is getting moved more than the bottom. Oh dear, I need to get work so I can make money for tuition fees. You think working at a checkout would be unrealistic after a week?

  • @theprince08853 Oh, I don't know - it's really tough to talk - this video gives you an idea of what you might sound like and look like...Two weeks would definitely be better. If you have to work it wouldn't be terrible, but you likely won't have much energy (I lost 10 lbs by the week after) and talking will still be tough! Good luck, let me know if you have any more questions!

  • @DeeConn Ok, thanks very much for replying, have a good day! :)

  • @theprince08853 Hell, yeah!!! Do you live in Canada??? OHIP covers it. I'm guessing it's the same in all the provinces. but if you live in the States, I don't know.... Do they cover it AT all?? I'm not trying to sound stupid. Just curious....

  • @ralphyization We thought that we could get the surgery covered, but ended up not qualifying for some reason..I'm really lucky my parents didn't have a problem paying for it, but I can't imagine needing this surgery and not being able to get it. (Canada)

  • Hey DeeConn,

I'm anxious for your update video!

  • im thinkin of getting this done, how long did u have braces for before/after surgery? thankyouu!!

  • @700will007 Hi there! I had my braces for about a year before surgery, and now I'm getting them off this month - about 6/7 months after surgery! Just remember: you only have to wear braces for a little while, but perfect teeth are forever!

  • How are you doing now?

  • @DeeConn Hi Dee,

I was wondering I know you had your lower jaw moved forward. Did you get your chin agumented as well?? to enhance your profile? or was it not recommended?

    thank you in advance

    Thank you in advance

  • Hi Deecon,

How are you feeling? my surgery is in a couple of weeks. I'm having similar surgery done to the lower jaw and possibly genioplasty for the chin

Have you recovered feeling in the lower lip and chin yet?

    Thank you in advance

  • @MrCheerfulGuy I'm feeling much better! And I'm actually well enough to be travelling around New Zealand and Australia and diving the Great Barrier Reef! No problems :)

However, I haven't recovered all the feeling on my right side for the lower lip and chin. For me, this is no big deal, and I think I'm getting some sensation - it might take a while though.

If you have any more questions feel free to drop me a line!

  • @DeeConn I know you had your lower jaw moved forward, did you have your chin augmented as well? to enhance your profile? or was it not recommended? If so are you glad you had your chin done?

    Thank you in advance

  • @MrCheerfulGuy I did have my lower jaw moved and my chin moved also - it was a dual purpose move for both functionality as well as appearance! It was recommended and I'm very glad I did it. I can now close my lips over my mouth, and my jawline and profile and quite nice now. I personally recommend it if you have a similar problem to me!

  • @DeeConn I was wondering you had your lower jaw moved forward did they give you the option to have your chin augmented? if so are you glad? if not why was it not necessary? thank you in advance

  • grats on the surgery, you had double jaw surgery you said? im suprised you can eat real food, or just really soft stuff like mashed potatoes?

oh i had double jaw surgery also and was wired shut for about a month and was on a liquid diet for about.. i dunno a month for two
