@voltron10001 Basically, your .bat file, which is now inside the Aoe 2 file, is ordering the termination of explorer.exe, the only cause of the color problem. Then, it orders for the start of the game, by saying run EMPIRES.exe. When you close the game. It starts up explorer.exe again, so you never knowthe difference!

Same problem in starcraft, simply opening the screen resolution from [right click -> properties on desktop] and leaving this window open while you play the game will solve the problem... You don't need to restart explorer.

I know it may sound stupid but it actually works. It's just aero not liking 256 colour games.

IF THIS DOESN'T WORK FOR YOU:

You can always kill explorer.exe manually each time you play.

1.) Start the game

2.) Alt+tab away

3.) Ctrl+alt+del, and run task manager

4.) End the explorer.exe process (leave task manager open!)

5.) Alt+tab back to the game, colors will be fixed.

6.) When you are done playing, go to applications tab of task manager, click "new task" button, type "explorer.exe", and hit enter.

7.) Boom.

lol all this does is shut down explorer.exe whits can be done way easier by task manger . only diffrents is that you dont have to tell your bios to run explorer.exe again when your done playing it whits is why you need to save it as a bat insted of a ini

Following the video the tutorial runs perfectly, and to complement I tested with Age of Empires 1 and the Expansion Rise of Rome, and runs ok too.

The Secret is copy the .bat inside the folder of Age of Empires I or II, I will try too with Starcraft, Diablo & Hellfire expansion, Fallout, Fallout 2 with the High Res Patch and Fallout Tactics Brotherhood of steel, I believe this solution will run.

Do this first .Right click on icon, Properties, VERY IMPORTANT…..At the end of the Target "move your curser to the end" “The Highlighted Part" hit the spacebar once then type in no startup.

Then go to the Compatibility

Run in XP Service pack 2, Check the box the 256 colors,

Check the box Disable desktop composition

Check the box Disable display scaling on dpi settings

Check the boxRun as administer

Hit apply . Then change your rez to 800x600 just before you play.

IFOUND ON SOME COMPUTERS YOU DONT NEED TO DO THIS. The program was written for 800x600. Just change your screen resolution to 800x600. Right click on your desktop and change it. I did try this method above and it didnt work. I changed my desktop rez and it works just fine.

Isn't always killing Explorer before launching the game, and then again starting it, isn't it a a bad option. The system might run into problems, if we forcefully kill explorer every time.
