I am not affiliated with the group, but I can surmise that Matt is a girl because they had a girl that could cosplay Matt and dance. As to your claim that Joe doesn't do anything: While not as active in the dancing, he plays a vital role to the choreography of their performance. This remains one of my favorite memories of AX 08.
