@N4lzc But on the other hand, what you said about DD is true, becayse they did most of the background effects, image corrections but also the entire waterfall scene and Beckets death.
@N4tc That's completly true but since Harry Potter I have to say that Double Negative made its way on to the podium too. They destroyed the millenium bridge, recreated London in 3D, created the CGI water simulator in HP4 later used for the flying dutchman in PotC. They also made tons of spells, smoke effects, thousands of green screens and Hogwarts completely in 3D. So even if they are not as known as ILM yet, I have to say they do as greeat job as ILM.
Digital Domain certainly do such a great Visual FX for lots of movies, but they only make the easy ones (of course for all of us mortals they can be difficult or impossible) but the truth is Industrial Light & Magic (aka ILM) is the company No.1 in making VFX for movies.
DD makes the easier ones (stairs sequence in Pirates of the Caribbean and some landscapes) while ILM take the responsibility to make the complex ones (ie.Davy Jones Tentacle face and his crew, Transformers Rigs and many others
@culliganbro1 Nah ILM are still the best currently (avatar, transformers, pirates), DD 2nd (Tron, Transformers, Pirates, 2012), Weta would be 3rd maybe? All weta have done that looks amazing is Avatar and LotR, plus they spend far more time per project. DD and DNeg are still my fav studios though. Just my opinion.
@TheKumaDB ok yea there is no arguing really. some of the best effects i have seen were in pirates and transformers. 2012 i thought was low quality compared to other film tho. but i think weta is the best because they had to make the whole movie in c.g. and still make it a believable world. but hey to each his own
@culliganbro1 You forget that when its all CG you don't see reality to compare it to =]. One thing I love about weta is they like to create software (massive, mudbox, mari). DD made Nuke though
yes marekmoucek you are right that they can create the people with cgi technology but it takes longer than acting this scene with real people ... they havent got enough time to create all things on the computer
i dont know why they uses greenscreen and real people, when vfx can make even more realistic people then real people :D, i think real people + greenscreen is more expensive than vfx... (sorry for bad english)
I never knew Digital domain these these gfx , i would mostly like Industrial Light and Magic company ...their effects is also awesome....btw , which software is used to create these effects and is there a nice future as a career if we choose Animation...?
@deepfriendhere In animation choose Autodesk Maya. Don't go with other softwares - Maya is the main software used for animation in decent studios - The experts will say Maya is always preferable
@davehaslanded Actually, yes it will. Photorealistic rendering is becoming so cheap to do, that it will no longer make any sense to do miniatures. Even beyond a cost perspective, CG setups can be tweaked to hell, and things like lighting can be modified much after the fact. When CG becomes TRULY super-cost effective - bye bye miniatures. Thats just the evolution.
@Kyorlhart With movies the past few years it takes more of a trained eye to spot CGI from real life. I can guess within the next 5-10 years it'll be completely impossible to tell.
@rensdyret Vendors sell things that they did not make, these people are contractors as they make this art at order. (but art criticizers say it is not so, it they cannot be called artists.)
@rensdyret What exactly does that have to do with vendors. Vendors are the people who sell the product but have nothing to do with the manufacturer/brand. Contractors make things by order, they are contracted which is what producers do to get cg. (unless they are in-house of course.)
The companies providing the CGI for motion pictures are vendors as well (Explained on various encyclopedia-sources; for instance, check the wikipedia for "vendor").
Vendors can provide AND produce the services or goods to other companies. In this case, yes, motion picture studios. Vendors are by definition just agencies or companies selling a product or a service.
Ask Digital Domain or any visuel effects-company for instance.
@rensdyret thats not the definition of vendor. what your saying is that vendor and manufacturer are the same thing. They aren't and I will drop arguing with the misinformed.
With all due respect, because i know how much effort took you to compile this... many of this movies were made by OTHER companies... Sorry... At least "I, robot" was made by WETA the same company that made LOTR and district 9... etc... thanks!
@druidadru ... Um... you do know that most movies these days have more than 1 visual effects company that work on it right? I hardly think that Digital Domain would lie about what they worked on in their company reel. WETA did do work on "I,Robot" but so did Digital Domain.
If you want Special effects programs try ZBrush for modeling, Maya for anything, 3Ds Max for almost anything, and some free programs Blender 3D, UDK ( Unreal Development Kit) and many more
@N4lzc But on the other hand, what you said about DD is true, becayse they did most of the background effects, image corrections but also the entire waterfall scene and Beckets death.
