I learned to drive in one of these. I joined the Army before I had a driver's license, and came from a poor family that didn't own a car, so a PLS is the first thing I ever drove. It was a cold day at the Letterkenny ASP, and I nearly flipped that bitch going down a hill when I had to literally stand on the brake pedal to get it to slow. Scared the shit out of the NCO riding shotgun who apparently didn't believe me that I never drove before. He took over after that.

It's called a PLS or Palletized Loading System. It's used for picking up specially designed connexes. The " truck " part of it is called a HEMTT or Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck. The only reason why i know these things is because i'm in the Army and used this truck in Iraq. Theres also an 8 wheeled version of this called an LHS or Load Handling System.

That's a PLS (palletized load system). It uses that hook to load a pallet of cargo on the back. It tows a special trailer with a pintle type hitch, but different configurations are available, including tanker, wrecker, and fifth wheel. It uses a Detroit 8V92 diesel and an Allison transmission. GCWR is in excess of 60 tons.

The weirdest thing about driving them is the operators location in reference too the steering axle. You actually don't start your turn until your parallel with your intended lane of travel. It feels like your going to overshoot your turn, but it tucks in real quick when your crank the steering wheel. I almost forgot the ballistic glass panel on the drivers floorboard that allows you too see over the crest of a hill before you descend, neat experience!
