Two giraffes. One grows taller than the other. Leaves are rare. The taller can reach more leaves. The shorter ends up starving to death. The taller finds a mate and produces offspring. These offspring are much more likely to grow to be taller like mom/dad.
Creatures who have advantageous traits survive to breed over those that dont. Traits do get inherited from parents. That is how evolution works.
The only thing I fail to comprehend is the fact that some ppl do not understand this.

The purpose of the experiment was not to 'prove evolution' but to investigate increased melanism in certain populations of peppered moths. The various studies have actually added to our knowledge of the genetics behind melanism. Secondly, the weight of the data from all the different studies support Darwin's theory of natural selection.
