You will notice that almost always Hunter must keep fidgeting and moving about in interviews, lighting a Cigarette, removing Clothes, looking for a Lighter/Cigs, refilling a Drink, whatever - I think he does it as a kind of mental distraction & to impose his aura of chaos which makes him feel comfortable & more at ease which helps his train of thought.

Letterman's living in the fog. Thompson was much to radically insightful regarding the world for most people to listen to openly. Actually, most people don't have the capability to listen "openly", meaning, they disguise their real beliefs under so many layers that the actor that the person has turned into can't help but take over. I really wish everyone could reconnect with their inner self. Maybe not in the way that HST did, but in a way that you could still understand his genius.

I don't think he's butting in because he's a bad interviewer, I think he doesn't know how to handle the situation of interviewing a coked-up personality on network TV. He panics and thinks he'll keep things in control by leading the interview.

yeah, it was a little trick of his for awhile, he famously did it in a live televised interview here in Australia with disastrous affect in'77. You will notice that almost always Hunter must keep fidgeting and moving about in interviews, lighting a Cigarette, removing Clothes, looking for a Lighter/Cigs, refilling a Drink, whatever - I think he does it as a kind of mental distraction & to impose his aura of chaos which makes him feel comfortable & more at ease which helps his train of thought.
