  • As a kid grwoing up in Bethesda Md. I got this 45 handed down to me (or I 'borrowed' it) as a kid by my sister. I always loved this song and longed to hear it again. "The Girl Who Faded Away" was the flip side. Really surprising it didn't get picked up nationally. Thank God for people who keep their records and post them here.

  • Fabulous song.

  • I've got that 45 too!

  • Berberich is now drumming for one of DC's hottest new bands - The VI-Kings

  • Saw them with Lawrence and the Arabians in a BATTLE OF THE BANDS in 1965, can not recall the location.

  • @1956safari They did a Battle at Northwestern High School and lost to Lawrence, They didn't stand a chance...

  • Bob burbich now works at trax on wax record store in catonsville maryland.

    Great guy

  • GREAT SONG - NEVER MADE IT NATIONALY BUT I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO SEE THEM AT A HIGH SCHOOL DANCE IN THE 60 IES !!!

  • the guitar towards the end of this track gives me goose bumps love it!

  • Ron Rondo on WYRE Annapolis used to play this tune at least once an hour when it first broke. Kept my radio dial on that station constantly in hopes of hearing it. Great stuff.

  • i love this sng !!!

  • Thanks for posting the original...always knew the Lyres cover, but this is great.

  • I remember the day I finally found the album Signed DC. To me this is the greatest single of all time. Aside from driving a hearst for 2 years I got a bass and learned to play because of the Beatles but the Hangmen proved to me success was possible. Love them and the songs Thanks for posting it and long live rock and roll

  • I saw the Hangmen in the summer of 67 at a rec center gig close to Northwood High School. They seemed like nice guys. Tom talked to me for a little while about playing guitar in a band, which is all I wanted to do after high school. It was nice of him to take a few minutes to speak encouragingly to a younger aspiring guitar player. I ended playing in bands for many years... nice to hear this tune again... it would be great to see some video from this time.

  • George Daly was other Hangmen guitarist, founded the band w/ friend Tom. Daly wrote most of Hangmen's album and the classics Bad Goodbye & Faces, sung by the great Brit Dave Ottley. Daly, Berberich, drummer & Paul Dowell, bass, then founded short-lived Dolphin band in DC with the immortal Roy Buchanan sometimes guitar. Daly on bass and Berberich drums then recruited the great guitarist - Buchanan's replacement, Nils Lofgren (Springsteen's band) for the seminal US band, the Grin. Look it up.

  • Wasn't George Daly in this band? Why isn't he in the credits?

  • @AudioDuck - I don't think George was with them until they "became" the Hangmen. If Tom's around, he can answer the question.

  • And this song (along with "Don't Call Me Flyface") is featured on the fabulous "SIGNED D.C." lp on Satan Records!

  • What a great song!

And of course Bob Berberich went on to play with Nils Lofgren in GRIN...

  • Actually, it was February 1966, not February 1967, when it was a hit all over the DC area.

  • The Hangmen were from the D.C. area.

We were fortunate enough to have them play several times at La Salle Teen Club in Chillum back in '64- '65.

  • Awesome! I went to WJ also. I remember when the Hangmen played @ WJ..when they had a drummer named Dave Ottley? I understood he died and Bob took over. I remember requesting the b side of this record..." Girl Who Faded Away " ...but they couldn't play it. They said they had just learned it ..long enough to record it.

  • @falcon92529 - Dave Ottley is alive and well and living outside London. He was the lead singer and was never the Hangmen's drummer. Bob Berberich was always the drummer.

  • Great beat ... brings back memories for those of us who grew up in Bethesda, MD and attended WJ with band members ... Tom was/is very talented as were/are other band members ... Tom's later work is especially memorable.

  • I believe they're were from Washington D.C. What a great song!!!

  • Great!! Only knew the cover by the Lyres up to now.
