Entertaining video. If you wanted to know, these "small" coal rakes normally run at a nominal 3344 tonnes gross trailing load (about 2550 tonnes of coal). Maximum load for 3 x C class up Zig Zag is 3393 tonnes. The curves on Zig Zag are very sharp for a main line, a long curve of 200 metres (10 chains) radius, and two shorter curves of 160 metres (8 chains) radius.
Thank you sth475-most interesting. The driver said that he had 3380 tonnes on board so he was obviously cutting it fine. One or two lumps more and he would have been over the limit!! Lol
@turnbs Not wrong there, C's are V16 645 turbo charged (second generation) EMD engines, where as the 82 & DL class have a V12 710 (third generation) of comparable power . The first generation EMD engines where the 567 series and these were roots blown.
Would you mind entering details from your conversation in info ? I was rapped over- comment about engines- "BIG NOISY ONES". Radius of curve Pi. Microwave oven- back to the sheds !
Could not get load hauled- was it 3380 tones TOTAL weight or just coal ?. Sorry, old ears and brain cannot pick up conversation too well.
Thank you very much for your kind comment. I re-edited the video to include the departure of the four locos from Lithgow. It made sense as it was a bit disjointed!
is there a cd player on the c class loco as well

When it comes to sheer locomotive noise you cannot beat the C class. It radiates the sound of power.

Hi ernietube-the weight of the coal alone was 3380 tonnes. The individual horsepowewr of each loco is 3300 H.P.

You are right, C class are V16. (82 class and DL are V12.)

That is GREAT VIDEO !! Tells about the old bottom section of the Great Zig Zag.
Can you compare it with Belbin's video done some 50 years ago with a 58 class and three standard goods steam locos ?
