My condolences on the loss of your Shetland Sheepdog. My Sheltie soul mate died in September, and I miss him beyond words. (Unfortunately, I don't have any videos of him.)
He's a sweetheart, he makes me want one just like him. :) Shelties have it all...looks, personality, intelligence! But the debarking seems wrong.. I once had a neighbor call Child Services on me because when my kids were little, they got excited and made noise playing in the yard while she was nursing a vodka hangover. Whatever happened to trying to be a decent human being? Barking dogs, kids, the teenager down the street practicing drums...SO WHAT? Live and let live.
I have a sheltie named Jessie, and she is only 3, she got ill recently and we thought we might lose her, we think we have solved the problem, we think it is an allergy to pork. she was on steriods for a few months and I have just weined her off them, the poor dog had to pee ever 30 seconds and eat like 4 horses. I couldn't see her living like this, so I slowly took her off. the problem she was having has not returned. I was in tears for weeks. I will hate it if I lose her, bailey was perfect.
omg that is so sad i had a lab once named scout when i was six i ran away and he followed me all the way to PA from WV and he was with me then and i know that he is still here watching over me and my family :)
@BowieSalvatore shelties can be taught to do anything or not to do anything, Bailey is only barking about his tricks and talking to him mom. We taught our sheltie to go get a toy, whenever she would get the urge to bark at fire trucks or motor cycles, or other loud things, they want to tell us something is wrong, so when she makes the first yip, I say get your toy, no bark and she does it immediately. she knows her toys by name, and her bunny toys are never chewed or ripped, as she loves bunnys
@TheFreefreedog1 we had one - a black and white one - and he was great :) he seemed really nice all the time and wasn't mean, plus he was cute the way he'd smile
Bailey was debarked before we met him by his breeder when he was 3.5 months old. Many sheltie breeders debark their dogs when they plan to show them. He had a growth spurt shortly after his bark was softened, and that's when they decided to sell him as a pet. While my feelings are mixed about debarking (or 'bark softening' as some call it), his soft bark never caused him any problems. He could bark as much as he wanted to!
@pal2k9s Yeah! I have had a Sheltie for 13 years-- they are a barky breed. I know a couple Shelties that have been debarked. Personally, mine hasn't been but he;s certainly gotten more vocal as he's gotten older. =_=;;
@sushidog521 -- Our current sheltie, Piper, is still 'bark intact'. I really enjoy hearing her grumbles, grunts, and rumbles, even though the barks can be ear-piercing! She's actually very quiet for a sheltie. She 'complains' more than 'barks'. She sounds like an old woman complaining under her breath (that she shouldn't bark). It's part of her personality... really funny- I should get it on video!
Just saw this for the first time! What a sweetie. We lost our Sheltie Yogi a year ago..he was 14 and so loved. We still speak of him everyday. He did lots of tricks as well. He was my best buddy. He was arthritic and just couldn't walk anymore. We tried everything to help him, but he got down and was completely unable to stand or walk. Vet said there was nothing we could do at that point. He was such an athlete and so brave. Thank you for bringing a smile to my face today! Blessings!
My beloved Cirocco was 19 when we had to put her down in 1999. She was so arthritic she couldn't walk anymore and she was in a lot of pain. Hardest thing I ever did. I still think of her every day. But since Shelties look so much alike, I can watch videos like this and pretend I'm seeing her again. Thanks for posting.
Wow! 19 years old! How wonderful that you and Cirocco were able to spend such time together. I'm so happy that Bailey can help you reminisce fondly of your sweet sheltie. :)
aww cuute how did you teach your sheltie to do those things bc I have a female sheltie and I cant figure out exactly how to train her :) so if you can plz help me out...
ahaha wow thats so cool! this is more proof why shelties are the greatest dogs there ever were :D i cant wait to get one (poor and in college so itll have to wait). i cant imagine how it feels to lose such a great companion like that, but at least you know he had a happy life right?
Our family can appreciate the tremendous loss that you feel. We lost our Sheltie Hannah 5 years ago, and we still miss her terribly. Shelties are such WONDERFUL pets...really members of the family.
wow, hes beautiful! and so smart! that's too bad that you lost him so soon. I had a female named Zoe and she died at 9 years just over a month ago of cancer. I need to get some videos of her on here doing her tricks but they're hard to watch just yet.
Bailey reminds me very much of my Zoe, who we also lost to cancer at 9 years old. They even did some of the same tricks (you can see for yourself in my video, if you'd like.)
This is really cute, and it made me smile. He was a handsome boy.
Sorry for your loss, Bailey looked like a wonderful friend. I have also lost some wonderful friends so I know how hard it can be. I am glad to see your got another sheltie to help ease the pain. It does help.
@plptypscp Hi, I'm Bailey's mom. Bailey was debarked by the breeder before we brought him into our family. He still barked as much as he wanted- we never told him to quiet down! I don't know why the breeders debarked him- it was how he came to us. Thanks for your question!
Your Bailey reminds me of my Katie who died in June, 2 months short of 15. She knew alot of tricks too, but not quite as many as yours. I have a new sheltie named Tara and she has a lot to learn yet. Was Bailey debarked? She sounded alot like my debarked collie Gracie. I have 2 collies and the sheltie and all come from rescue. We fostered 20 collies and shelties for collie rescue over 3 years time.
I wish my sheltie knew all those tricks. Bailey looked so much like mine. (My You Tube name is actually in honor of him "Spike"). I m so sorry he s no longer with you.
@xlaxformax Hi- I'm Bailey's mom. We trained Bailey with a clicker. He loved it! There were a whole lot of other tricks that he knew. I didn't have time to get all of them on video before he left us.
Stay tuned for our new sheltie puppy... she will learn all thr tricks Bailey knew and more.
I so sorry for your loss.....I notice he was bigger then a normal sheltie size, just like ours Nigel. He was about 36-38lbs most of his life. But we two lost Nigel to cancer in May. We were lucky though because he was 16 1/2 years-old. I think about him everyday.
@The98corvette Thank you for your kind words. I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your Nigel. It's never easy to let them go. It's been almost a year since Bailey passed, and we still cry over him. How wonderful that you had Nigel for over 16 years! Lucky for you and your family!
Yes, Bailey was oversized at 18" at the shoulders. He weighed between 23-28lbs.
@jumpseatnews Thank you for sharing this video. Sorry for your loss. We just lost our oldest sheltie one month ago today at 10 due to cancer, he was my mom's dog. We own two more of the same line uncle and nephew. Our biggest dog was 40-45lbs. The two younger are 40lbs. I hope you enjoy your new sheltie puppy!
@The98corvette What an adorable video! He was gorgeous! I had a male sheltie named Kelvin who passed away from Stage V lymphoma as well. He was only 5-years-old. It was the hardest thing I've ever gone through. He was an over-sized sheltie as well. He was just under 21 inches at the shoulder and weighed 42 pounds...(he was in great shape though...we did agility and he wasn't over-weight....he was just a BIG boy) I'm glad to hear you have a new puppy. I do too. Jovi - she's a blue merle.
I remember when I lost my sheltie that I grew up with. She was the same age as me and she died at 12 years old. It was one of the hardest things I ever had to go through. I wish they would live longer. Bailey is beautiful and incredibly smart.
LOL "bailey be sexy" , so fucking talented, i would never be able to train a dog like that (i guess the breed's trainability helps) :) i am terribly sorry for ur loss
We sure are. We're expecting a new sheltie puppy in a few weeks. He won't replace our beloved Bailey, but it will be fun to have a new puppy to train and play with.

What's the difference between a spin and a turn?
Millza79 11 months ago
@Millza79 - Hi, I'm Bailey's mom (the one in the video who is asking Bailey to perform).
The difference between 'spin' and 'turn' : a 'spin' goes to the right, and 'turn' goes to the left.
