Why did it ignite 4 mins premature? Somebody must have hit the button....was it a mistake? Sounds dangerous, 4 mins, could've still had some workers in the vicinity.
@Sp33dDem0n1 Cool out dude. I was commenting on the guy who said that a town in Ireland should be imploded. I wasn't talking about your comment at all.
That right tower was just hanging on there, using his last bit of strength to take one last look at the surrounding countryside before giving way to have no base :(
@kingmigget you know what i mean as in old 20th centuary buildings dock cranes and stuff (i know that they are being replaced by far bigger more efficent machiens)
Shame, that thing had a lot of memories, like the time it poisoned our water supply and... Uhhh... Yeah you guys probably should have taken it down earlier.
I'm telling you man, open your eyes. There is no fucking way these would have collapsed with controlled demolitions, there must have been planes fly into them
@Niceboy3377 That's a stupid thing to say. I imagine for a lot of people in Capetown would disagree. I imagine a lot of peoplre grew up looking at those things on the way to work or school or whatever and the sky looks strange without them. It's like the world is changing around them, and to a lot of people, that's gonna trigger some nostalgia.
@Squarerig agreed...they stood for what 60 years or something..formed part of the scenery - people would be so used to them on the horizon - then bang they are gone forever in like 6 or 7 seconds! Suppose its all down to progress....but then how have we progressed when Ireland is in the grip of a financial crisis!
@DaSoulSlasher Oh I know, it looked like the cloud of dust that connected them could have been their "hands" reaching out to each other and while the one bowed her head and cried the other told her to stay strong. The music really was appropriate for this demolition. Anyone know what it's called?
not the best footage... not the best music your attemt at the end to slow it down shudders, check out "The Best of Athlone Towerssmall extended" by nasty prodcution
Excellent footage, indeed. It is amazing how one becomes attached to landmarks, even if they are not beautiful. Next time I am on my way to Cape Town from the airport it will surely seem very strange not to see the towers. However, in another video there was talk of plans being made to use the available space , for the good of the communities, and that is heartening news.
They just Look like two dusty cardboard cylinders caving in to me, nothing special. The sheer fact that such large structures can be collapsed in seconds gives me weird feling in my gut, like nothing is really of much substance, what a strange thought. I supose were all just a bunch of atoms anyway. This land mark will be missed sorely by my poor navigational skills :)
It seems only 'yesterday' that I gave Dad a lift to work to the Athlone power station while his motorbike had a flat tyre - actually it's a loooong time ago, and now Dad will never know the Salt 'n Pepper pots have died too.

@Eclipsinq Absolutely None. These are cooling towers. Harmless steam is the only thing ever emitted from these towers.
