People are over reacting about static. In my old job i used to build PC's. I was supposed to use an anti-static wrist strap and keep parts on an anti-static surface. But i could never be bothered with that stuff and in the 3 years i was doing it day in day out I never had anything mess up. Also, when i clean out my own PC, I strip it and vaccum all the parts. It's never given me any trouble.
mine only came in one piece not two i have the 40Gb PS3(the fatty) and it only works occasionally. so i dont even use it anymore and the only reason i bought it because my first ps3 got YLOD so i got another one and bought this to prevent another death :(

@PhillyBull123 good review man, i still have my PS3 60gb since Nov. 17th 2006 and no problems at all, i play it 3-4 a day and i think it works perfect because i clean the dust every month(vacuum the dust as the manual says) and there is now still running like a champ....
@race4lyfe just use a small low-power vacuum(portable one) like that one you use to clean the car; do it all over the vents and also where the fans are just behind of the system for 2-3 mins. Do this every month(play it or not) and you will have PS3 for a very long time... Cheers from Italy.
@eyster10 i dont understand what your saying. using a vacuum cleaner to "suck" the dust out causes the dust and air particles to create a static charge. that static can ultimately damage the electrical board. its better to use an air duster because it has certain chemicals that prevent static discharge same thing goes with a pc.
@myR12006 actually vaccuming anything that has a motherboard is the worst thing you can do. it causes static electricity and can fry your console. the best thing to use is something with compressed air
To tell you the truth, I like loud fans. I don't mind if it is noisy. I like the unique sound the fans on this one makes. To me its like the sound of an Idling Hemi.
FYI, the fan doesn't cause the same issues as did the 360 version in regard to power usage. The 360 version obtained it's power after it had been converted to DC through the external 360 power brick. In the case of the PS3, the power supply is inside the system, so the cooling solution only feeds off the AC from your wall outlet, and passes through energy to the PS3 internal power supply. This is the same as if it was plugged into a power strip that your PS3 was also pluged into.
I use a small plug in fan fan instead and have no probs in my media cabinet.Brings temp down and airflow up.Dont buy these add on coolers.They cause more heat

first you can't shut it off without fliping the power switch on the back and it does more damage then good! I had the 60gb model and it helped kill my ps3 in less then a week!

might be true.might not be. i had this intercooler on my 60GB and my intercooler burnt out on me after a year. fans just stopped working. i would leave it running 24/7. the intercooler i have now, plugs into the wall, NOT the ps3. plus it has a temp sensor. it only turns on when the system gets above a certain temp and doesn't shut off until it gets below a certain temp. even after the system is completely off. my ps3 been on for a month straight now. no probs no noise no heat.
again. i leave my system running 24/7, one of the first 60GBs released, and 3 years later still running strong. but ive always had an intercooler on it. i put my hand up to all sides of my ps3 with my new intercooler(not the one in the vid- a new nyko inter.) and there is no heat at all coming from it. it keeps it super cool. but what do i know? i just have one of the oldest ps3s that runs 24/7 thats always had an intercooler with no problems for 3 years.
nyko. but its only one piece. not two like the one in the video. it plugs into the wall not the ps3. its $30 at GameStop. just make sure you read the box before you get it to make sure that it plugs into the wall. been two months now since i got it and it still works great. should be no risk of components "burning out" since it doesn't get its power supply from the ps3.
good review, but these things are not good for your ps3. they eventually burn out components inside the ps3 (draw too much current). i have an original 60gb and it has worked perfectly from day one. right now i have a simple little light stand that shows it off and 3 tiny fans that cool it. but something of this size is overkill (but looks damn cool)
I got the 80gig in fall 2007 and it died 4days ago, after doing research I realized no matter what you do its gonna eventually die, so yes the chincy fan is a waste,and I took my ps3 apart and to my surprise the fan, cpu and gpu had very little dust, I credit that to throwing a hankercheif on my ps3 when not in use.

I'll be getting this for sure. I had my 60 gig for a while now (about 3 months into release) and I got the yellow light a few weeks ago. Just payed the 149 and its getting fixed now. But I need this mainly cause my room is HOT (live in Florida AND my AC doesn't work). Not trying to spend another $100 on repairs so this will work out good. Rather this thing be loud than to spend another $149 for sure.

What do you think the yellow light is? Most of the time its the PS3 overheating to the point where the contacts on the GPU or CPU chip become loose. I used to think the same way as you... "PS3's don't overheat, I don't need this.." yet about 2 weeks ago my PS3 gets a yellow light due to overheating. I treat my PS3 amazingly too: Put a cover over it at night so dust isn't a prob, give it breathing room, don't damage or drop it and yet it still happened to me.
i do the exact same and havent had a problem and i play in a room with a sliding glass door and windows for wall and i take around 8 hours of sun, so my room cooks and my ps3 plays fine. i have the intercooler and used it once and packed it up.

Well I don't think its the electronics fault either, heat and humidity plays a factor in overheating of course. I'm going by the video that shows how to fix the YLOD though. The man said that the soldiering melts and the circuit board looses contact with the CPU or GPU (or at least thats the problem most of the time).
I got my PS3 back from being serviced only to get another broken one... but when I get it back I might not buy this, thinking about moving it to another/cooler room instead.

i used to have an intercooler, but after a month or so it failed to do its job, causing my ps3 to overheat, ending in a broken blu-ray player, luckily it occured only a few months after i got my ps3, so it was still within warranty. but im never going to get one again, so if you ever have my bad luck, you'll know why.

FYI, the fan doesn't cause the same issues as did the 360 version in regard to power usage. The 360 version obtained it's power after it had been converted to DC through the external 360 power brick. In the case of the PS3, the power supply is inside the system, so the cooling solution only feeds off the AC from your wall outlet, and passes through energy to the PS3 internal power supply. This is the same as if it was plugged into a power strip that your PS3 was also pluged into.

I use a small plug in fan fan instead and have no probs in my media cabinet.Brings temp down and airflow up.Dont buy these add on coolers.They cause more heat

well l have the same brand intercooler but not the same one anyways after using it for 4 or 5 month it freezes alot less then how it use to but at some point it made more bad then good my ps3 can read any more disc anymore and this first happen to my 60gb ps3 without intercooler then my newer 80gb ps3 with the nyko interrcooler l got for it LIFE IS A BITCH

first you can't shut it off without fliping the power switch on the back and it does more damage then good! I had the 60gb model and it helped kill my ps3 in less then a week!

might be true.might not be. i had this intercooler on my 60GB and my intercooler burnt out on me after a year. fans just stopped working. i would leave it running 24/7. the intercooler i have now, plugs into the wall, NOT the ps3. plus it has a temp sensor. it only turns on when the system gets above a certain temp and doesn't shut off until it gets below a certain temp. even after the system is completely off. my ps3 been on for a month straight now. no probs no noise no heat.

again. i leave my system running 24/7, one of the first 60GBs released, and 3 years later still running strong. but ive always had an intercooler on it. i put my hand up to all sides of my ps3 with my new intercooler(not the one in the vid- a new nyko inter.) and there is no heat at all coming from it. it keeps it super cool. but what do i know? i just have one of the oldest ps3s that runs 24/7 thats always had an intercooler with no problems for 3 years.

nyko. but its only one piece. not two like the one in the video. it plugs into the wall not the ps3. its $30 at GameStop. just make sure you read the box before you get it to make sure that it plugs into the wall. been two months now since i got it and it still works great. should be no risk of components "burning out" since it doesn't get its power supply from the ps3.

good review, but these things are not good for your ps3. they eventually burn out components inside the ps3 (draw too much current). i have an original 60gb and it has worked perfectly from day one. right now i have a simple little light stand that shows it off and 3 tiny fans that cool it. but something of this size is overkill (but looks damn cool)

YLOD can be caused by many reasons.
you need to clean out your ps3 often and give it about 7 inches away from anything.
older ps3 model(like the 60gig) tend to have more problems nowadays
bottom line, u dont need one.
its a waste of money because the ps3 can already keep its cool

I got the 80gig in fall 2007 and it died 4days ago, after doing research I realized no matter what you do its gonna eventually die, so yes the chincy fan is a waste,and I took my ps3 apart and to my surprise the fan, cpu and gpu had very little dust, I credit that to throwing a hankercheif on my ps3 when not in use.

very good bro, but the trouble with this is only in the top part, as it has one fan it only passes air one way, and cool gta4 vinal... back to what i was saying, i only passes air one direction but if youlook the top of the ps3 it has a inlet and an outlet, one taking cool air in and one pushing hot air out, and if its only doing it one way it ether pushing cool air into the console and pushing the hot bak in or the other way round, pulling the hot air out but preventing the cool air frm goin in

I'll be getting this for sure. I had my 60 gig for a while now (about 3 months into release) and I got the yellow light a few weeks ago. Just payed the 149 and its getting fixed now. But I need this mainly cause my room is HOT (live in Florida AND my AC doesn't work). Not trying to spend another $100 on repairs so this will work out good. Rather this thing be loud than to spend another $149 for sure.

What do you think the yellow light is? Most of the time its the PS3 overheating to the point where the contacts on the GPU or CPU chip become loose. I used to think the same way as you... "PS3's don't overheat, I don't need this.." yet about 2 weeks ago my PS3 gets a yellow light due to overheating. I treat my PS3 amazingly too: Put a cover over it at night so dust isn't a prob, give it breathing room, don't damage or drop it and yet it still happened to me.
It just happens less than others.

i do the exact same and havent had a problem and i play in a room with a sliding glass door and windows for wall and i take around 8 hours of sun, so my room cooks and my ps3 plays fine. i have the intercooler and used it once and packed it up.
it's just bad luck, dude. some ps3s bite it, some dont. mine's been fine since 2007.

i had this happen too, but i also have problems with all of my electronics because of the humidity and heat that my house is constantly experiencing. its not always the electronics fault. the gpu and cpu don't become loose, that's the rrod, i fix them all the time. most of the time people take into consideration dust/airflow, but much like me people forget about your environment. all electronics overheat, from time to time nothing wrong with adding some cooling

Well I don't think its the electronics fault either, heat and humidity plays a factor in overheating of course. I'm going by the video that shows how to fix the YLOD though. The man said that the soldiering melts and the circuit board looses contact with the CPU or GPU (or at least thats the problem most of the time).
I got my PS3 back from being serviced only to get another broken one... but when I get it back I might not buy this, thinking about moving it to another/cooler room instead.

I was planning on giving it a new 320gb HD that runs at 7200 rpms instead of the 5200, which might be louder and make it run hotter anyways, so this would be ok for me...plus, im trying to try new things with each ps3 to extend its life each time.

good review it help me decide which cooler to buy when i get my ps3 .i have my cooling issue solved with my 360 i have v2 cooling fans inside with a wisper max cooling fans and it stays very cool and never heats up.and is about the same in noise so i can handle that no problem i just want to keep it cool thanks for your review

nope, they just trash that HD, and give you a new unit...but they always format the HD to see if it was truely a problem with the HD or the data on it, and usually, it's a true HD problem.

i used to have an intercooler, but after a month or so it failed to do its job, causing my ps3 to overheat, ending in a broken blu-ray player, luckily it occured only a few months after i got my ps3, so it was still within warranty. but im never going to get one again, so if you ever have my bad luck, you'll know why.
