This is from the fall of 1965. It got airplay in December of 1965 on KEWB, Oakland. It's on an aircheck from 12-19-65. This is the better version compared to the stereo album version. The organ is louder for one thing.
I don't believe this song (which is a good one) made it into the top 20. Western Union was there highest chart record (somewhere in the top 10).
I much prefer the album "I see the light" (which I have digitized from my vinyl) to the "Western Union" lp and the rest. "Light" has more energy and a much rawer sound. I love the organ, A rare lp for me for I like every song on both sides
The 5 Americans cut an lp and 3 singles for HBR (I See the Light, Evol not Love, & Losing Game). The bulk of the band's output was for Dallas-based Abnak Records. 5A guitarist Norm Ezell has a music ministry now, and former leader Mike Rabon is involved in education.
I see The Light was also recorded as a single in Britain by a Portsmouth based soul-R&B group called Simon Dupree & The Big Sound released at the end of 1966. In fact it was their debut disc, which did not actually chart. Their sole Top 10 hit was Kites in 1967. Thank you for posting as I had not heard the original before.
Being from Dallas I remember when The 5 Americans were playing here in the Mertoplex. There was a little club at Preston and Northwest Highway where they were often booked.
I also have this 45..RIP Jimmy Wright
