I like Alan's performance best. When I first listened to Cabaret, it was its revival with Alan. So I'm more accustomed to that version. My favorite song has to be "I Don't Care Much".
Brilliance. Saw an amateur show called "A Night At The Musicals" lately and this was in it; the Emcee was so energetic and funny, just like Alan's performance without being a copy.
I Totally Doubt This,But Is There A Dvd For The Cabaret Revival? I Just Assumed So Because Of These Clips...Oh Well. This Is One Of My Favorite Musicals,I Have The Revival Cd On My Ipod :D
Joel Grey's performance in the movie is much funnier than this. A combination of overzealous singing (shouting in places!) and boring "raunchy" choreography make this version a bit of an anticlimax (no pun intended - or is it?) whereas the movie version still makes me laugh just thinking about it.
It would be more fun to perform as one of the dancers in the Lyric theatre. They were in lacey underwear & tights, many of the girls' bras were translucent and there were lots of scenes in which they touched eachother.
DeDeLeDeDe I like it... LOL. Cabaret is supposed to be risque. I've seen a video of John Stamos performing Cabaret, lol, that was different but he did a really good job at it.
well let's see... it's a song about a guy having two lovers at the same time... and it's starring alan cumming... gee, ya think it might be a li'l raunchy??? lol i luvs it... xD
Yes but Alan Cumming wears nothing but underwear for pretty much the whole thing. Joel Grey at least wears a tuxedo for the songs that aren't entirely about sex
I'd have to say that I think this version is more 20th century, while Joel Grey's was not. It just depends on the time in which it was done, or how the director chooses to portray the song. Alan talked about his character choices in an interview and he said that he didn't research Joel too much. He wanted to make Emcee his own, which I think is the smartest choice an actor can make. The character is in the script, not in past performances.
I think when it comes down to it, the dance number itself is probably better in the movie. However, I think Alan Cumming is a stronger singer than Joel Grey. Now, you can choose to look at this one and go, "OMG! Sex, it burns." But the song was always suppose to allude to sex. This just shouts it, while Joel Grey's number whispered it.
When it comes down to acting, I think they both play a different version of Emcee very well. I'd have to see them both try the version the other actor did before judging it. Overall, I prefer Alan Cumming's version. But I'm a bit bias.

I think this song is done better in the movie, than how this was done. This one is way too sexual. I also think that Joel Grey was a better MC than Alan Cumming.
It's Definetly over sexed and raunchy. You get more laughs with class. Suggestive not explicit. I do however like Alan Cumming's facial expressions and while he isnt a very good singer I really enjoyed to delivery of "I like it, zey like it"

I watched the show in London at the Lyceum Theatre and it's great. I think alan Cumming is great, the show's playing on sex during a warial time in Germany and he's really getting that through. Also he's very sexy, and he's bisexual!!
Hmm. While I like the film and Joel Grey's portrayal of the role of emcee, I admire Alan a lot more for bringing his own originality to the show. His version might be a lot more sexual, but I don't think it's right to criticize it just because it's different.
Cummings is better than Joel Grey was in the movie.... I don't know how Joel Grey would be on stage but anyone who thinks the way that Grey portrayed this character in the movie more accurately as intended than this Cummings portrayal doesn't understand how toned down the characters had to be for the movie. This is how the play was written. Raw and very lewd. This social craze signifies the political craze with the world events at the time.
He's bi, but even if he wasnt, of course he's acting, he's an actor, he wouldnt go on stage and ACTUALLY get raunchy with fellow castmembers, that's why its called acting!
oh i disagree. i think the innocence of the song paired with the raunchy, horniness of the emcee is PERFECT. you can't get enough! at least i cant...haha
i love alan cumming but i do think the revival is too raunchy, i mean, the original was subtle about its sexuality and it worked, theres no need for it to be so in your face
I'd just like to point out that the film is not the original version of Cabaret. Judi Dench was the first London Sally Bowles a while before the film was made.
