The Patriot Act is the indicator that we have lost the contrived war on terror. It takes away basic rights. What better victory for the enemies of freedom ? You don't protect your rights by taking them a way -- how stupid is that? @justonemorename interesting proposal. treason may not be the appropriate crime though, as it is the only crime defined in the Constitution, and refers to aiding enemies in time of war. it would be cool to have a law that made betrayal of the constitution a crime, but since it would mainly pertain to politicians, who would vote for it?

Congress is presumed to "act in good faith" - not knowingly pass legislation contrary to the Constitution, and when it comes to the Court, legislation gets overturned. problem here is none of the breaches in civil liberty resulting from the Patriot Act have made it up the SCOTUS, yet. it'd be quicker to stop renewing the damn thing, cos ANYONE who knows the 4th amendment can clearly see it is being violated here.
