stupid people, the slim is smaller because they reduced the size of the fan. The ps3 original had a 10% fail rate vs the ps3 slim which has a 30% fail rate. xbox 360 original had 50% fail rate and xbox 360 elite 30% fail rate and xbox 360S no fail rate. PS3 original and xbox 360S are the best choices when looking for a console
I understand why ppl prefer PC Gaming, cause consoles suck, with a good customizable PC u can add better cooling system, liquid or fan cooling and graphic cards :D
@yfumes I replaced thermal paste on both my CPU and GPU and it's been 6 months now and still playing games. Rarely it freezes up but it's not a heating issue. I know this cause the fan isn't high-spooled. I do get some weird red line artifacts in some of the games I play... weird, but still playable.

I fixed mine by replacing the thermal paste, then cutting a hole above the fan on the case then placing a fan grill over it with self-tapping screws.
PS3 gets all the fresh air it needs now, directly from the right side of the case (while standing verticle). The air is cooler and a good 2x more volume of air is being pushed through the vent on the same fan speeds.
The heatsink inside the PS3 is just horrible for air flow, I do not see why I haven't seen this solution AT ALL, it's so obvious.
@AntiStupidity gonna try that too, my ps3 is loud like a jet engine and it says system has become hot. I changed the termal paste but it didn't do shit. I is not even hot it just is loud but maybe it will work
@FlavorRoseDnB bad fan auto controll, add a fan or two or more fans PULLING air out of the back and not pushing the air and it should reduce this problem(the ps3 fan barely changes speeds depending if it gets hot or it's being used harder and longer) so these fans should help :)

Mine comes on but it docent appear on screen and then goes yellow and a flashing red. Mine is getting better because I put a hair dryer blowing hot sir into the back of it for 15 minutes and I let it cool 15 minutes.

ive had my ps3 since christmas of '07. its worked fine but sometimes ive left it on for up to 48 hours before hosting servers on warhawk and stuff but i never had a problem. i just got my copy of littlebigplanet 2 today and id only been playing it for 2-3 hours when my screen went black. it beeped and turned off. i tried to turn it on but when it sounded like it was starting u and the green light turned on it beeped some more and a flashing red light came on. im not looking for any solutions

@samjohnsonx I've had my PS3 fat for more than 2 years now, the only problem I've had is the Blu-Ray drive which got replaced and there's been no problem since. I think the drive got broken when someone shoved a disc in the drive when there was already in, I blame my brother lol...

My ps3 Beeps 3 times, the red light flashes a few times, a msg pops up on the screen saying 'the ps3 has overheated, let it cool down for a while' (something like that) and than goes yellow light... and it always happens when i turn it on for a minute, its the YLOD but in a different version :S 1st time i fixed the ps3, the YLOD was like on this video, but after i fixed it a few times the YLOD comes up in a different way...

@RetireMyJersey1 I've got the same problem. the fans kick in about 2 minutes (MAXIMUM THEY STAY SILENT FOR), then i get couple of minutes before overheating message is displayed and then it turns off. There is no dust in my ps3 and tried to replace the thermal paste and didn't help. also my ps3 is out of warranty so im out of luck and my parents wont let me pay 131Pounds...
@Retire My Jersey 1 youtube gilksy , sounds like your may just need thermal compound and a good clean out . you will be amazed how much crap gets in them especialy if they left sitting on a carpet . i recommend changing thermal compound every 12 months as it looses its efficiency to cool any longer . i also have extra vent in my base so the fan can suck in air better . they only suck air through the little slits near hdd . be like trying to breathe through a straw .
If you want to know how to manually adjust the PS3's internal fan speed visit my website sudburymods > com. You can adjust the fan for max airflow and minimum noise and prevent overheating, YLOD etc.
if it flashes u trade it it i were on lbp then it flashed red and on sony website it said like trade it in because you will usally find it wont turn back on
if you get the the yellow light turn off the ps3 unplug the power cord and let the system cooled down for about 30 mins to an hour and your fine, unless you dont have it plugged to a surge protector, because then you might have something internally wrong this can happen to any system doesn't if its an xbox or ps3 i have the original ps3 an never had a problem

@ez2ciwin I wouldn't recommend buy a fan that connects to the ps3 the cooler or whatever its called it takes energy from the ps3 and makes it works 2x as much. Not good =/
@ez2ciwin Just set it on top of something [ I use 2 small blocks of wood on both sides of the ps3 ] to reduce contact, and then put some fan to blow under and over it. I can run it like that for 2+ hours no YLOD. Without that, its 15-30 mins.
My ps3 started to overheat and it was really pissing me off because the room was getting so hot from all of the hot air comming out of it. So out of frustration I kicked it. Since I kicked it, its never overheated. Be sure to kick it more towards the left side of it as the right side is more solid and you can hurt your foot. If the kick doesnt work, try spitting on it for a week.
heres the problem. i have a 40 gig ps3 but when i play a game like resistance it runs nice and smooth. but when i try and play cod after 2 mins of it being played it turns off and beeps 3 times. i figured an overheating problem but replaced the thermal. didnt help at all. Any idea whats wrong?
The same thing is happeneing to me, one day im playing COD2 and the PS3 just turned off on me so l figured it overheated and just let it cool off then when l turned it back on it work smooth and fine and as soon as l logged on to COD2 for about 2 mins it shut off on me again and when l put on GTA4 and play, it works perfectly
@scar1343 EXACTLY THE SAME! not just cod, all games and sometimes just in the xmb. it srops the framerate massibely and it's like the graphics card overheats or the sound card? sometimes it takes an hour or more sometimes a minute. check out my video on my channel. i can play games still but some longer than others.

haha no buddy sorry but that wasnt the case and your lazy because your giving out bad advise. but i did repair the problem and it was a small plastic that was blocking the fan and now it works. you shouldnt be giving advise i would of lost money for something that small and easy to repair.

Make sure u use flux also. That is VERY important or you'll just have to fix it again and again. The flux is burning out of the solder that connects the GP and CPU on the PCB board. Solder without flux is brittle and doesn't make solid connections. This is the reason for YLOD and of course the over heating issue. Mod ur case or buy a small fan to stick by the vents (In back). If ur warrenty has expired fix it urself. Its the same shit Sonys gonna do, or send u another that eventually might YLOD.

i fixed mine three times but know out of thermal paste if u need help buy a $20 fan that clips on the back or side of your PS3 and that could fix it and if not change the thermal paste ive been usin arctic silver but im thinkin about buyin a different kind because whatever thermal paste gets colder is the 1 yo wanna buy =O)

@scar1343 i did the same.. 3 ylods on the same machine.. I went to pc gaming and have never looked back ! At least now i know i can fix my pc properly if anything goes wrong. I'm never buying a console from sony again !

yea this happened to me about a year ago and i ended up having to buy the slim ps3 but now the messed up one is just sitting in my room and it killed me when it stopped working but how did you fix yours and what caused your ps3 to overheat?

My ps3 Beeps 3 times, the red light flashes a few times, a msg pops up on the screen saying 'the ps3 has overheated, let it cool down for a while' (something like that) and than goes yellow light... and it always happens when i turn it on for a minute, its the YLOD but in a different version :S 1st time i fixed the ps3, the YLOD was like on this video, but after i fixed it a few times the YLOD comes up in a different way...

Need advice, my ps3 works fine for about 10 min i manage to sign on the psn and even get a chance to play a few games on mw2 then it just shuts off and the red light blinks continuously can i fix this on my own without paying $170 to sony???

@RetireMyJersey1 I've got the same problem. the fans kick in about 2 minutes (MAXIMUM THEY STAY SILENT FOR), then i get couple of minutes before overheating message is displayed and then it turns off. There is no dust in my ps3 and tried to replace the thermal paste and didn't help. also my ps3 is out of warranty so im out of luck and my parents wont let me pay 131Pounds...

@Retire My Jersey 1 youtube gilksy , sounds like your may just need thermal compound and a good clean out . you will be amazed how much crap gets in them especialy if they left sitting on a carpet . i recommend changing thermal compound every 12 months as it looses its efficiency to cool any longer . i also have extra vent in my base so the fan can suck in air better . they only suck air through the little slits near hdd . be like trying to breathe through a straw .

if you get the the yellow light turn off the ps3 unplug the power cord and let the system cooled down for about 30 mins to an hour and your fine, unless you dont have it plugged to a surge protector, because then you might have something internally wrong this can happen to any system doesn't if its an xbox or ps3 i have the original ps3 an never had a problem

Can someone help? My ps3 freezes after about 45- 1hr. The bottom of the ps3 is very hot. Is the fan bad or is the HDD corrupted? HELP!

@ez2ciwin Just set it on top of something [ I use 2 small blocks of wood on both sides of the ps3 ] to reduce contact, and then put some fan to blow under and over it. I can run it like that for 2+ hours no YLOD. Without that, its 15-30 mins.

My ps3 started to overheat and it was really pissing me off because the room was getting so hot from all of the hot air comming out of it. So out of frustration I kicked it. Since I kicked it, its never overheated. Be sure to kick it more towards the left side of it as the right side is more solid and you can hurt your foot. If the kick doesnt work, try spitting on it for a week.

heres the problem. i have a 40 gig ps3 but when i play a game like resistance it runs nice and smooth. but when i try and play cod after 2 mins of it being played it turns off and beeps 3 times. i figured an overheating problem but replaced the thermal. didnt help at all. Any idea whats wrong?

The same thing is happeneing to me, one day im playing COD2 and the PS3 just turned off on me so l figured it overheated and just let it cool off then when l turned it back on it work smooth and fine and as soon as l logged on to COD2 for about 2 mins it shut off on me again and when l put on GTA4 and play, it works perfectly

@scar1343 EXACTLY THE SAME! not just cod, all games and sometimes just in the xmb. it srops the framerate massibely and it's like the graphics card overheats or the sound card? sometimes it takes an hour or more sometimes a minute. check out my video on my channel. i can play games still but some longer than others.

haha no buddy sorry but that wasnt the case and your lazy because your giving out bad advise. but i did repair the problem and it was a small plastic that was blocking the fan and now it works. you shouldnt be giving advise i would of lost money for something that small and easy to repair.

Make sure u use flux also. That is VERY important or you'll just have to fix it again and again. The flux is burning out of the solder that connects the GP and CPU on the PCB board. Solder without flux is brittle and doesn't make solid connections. This is the reason for YLOD and of course the over heating issue. Mod ur case or buy a small fan to stick by the vents (In back). If ur warrenty has expired fix it urself. Its the same shit Sonys gonna do, or send u another that eventually might YLOD.

@relaxataxy thats tru .... the only reason it does that is because the are 2 many features to ps3 and xbox so it overheats if it just played games and dvd's it would never overheat but they had to make a web browser and like a games blu-ray and music player and a million things to it my ps2 never overheated i had it for 8 years. haha i have a wii no problems with it

ive got a ps3 slim for christmas and i was playing for the first time in like 20 minutes and then it just shutted down and the "thing" or "button" on the ps3 started to light red/black/red/black (dont know how to say) and then i started the ps3 again and started to play and it shutted down after like 5 minutes. WTF!? so tomorrow im gonna ask for a new one from the shop, and i dont want they to repair it, cuz i dont want to spend my whole christmas "holiday" to wait on the ps3.new ps3 must work
