Not all guitar amps can amplify a bass. Mine can, for example, but I'd still rather use my bass amp - it gives a better sound.

Maybe you got unlucky and ended up with a guitar amp that can't amplify a bass. But be careful - Guitar amps weren't meant to handle frequencies that low. You can blow a speaker if you're not careful.
