OXTOTL, what are you afraid of? Having someone find out that you aren't what you say you are, that you don't really understand dogs? Identify yourself.
The dog doesn't want to come to her...notice - ears back...dog's body language is intimidation...the bee-ach trainer snaps her fingers, uses ugly tone...I wouldn't "Come" to her either. It is ABOUT a good relationship with the dog....I wouldn't let this woman near my dogs....listen to her condescending voice to owner and dog.
I do not consider a yank on the collar to be positive training. She used the equivalent of "CHOKE" collar to yank. I don't think she is positive at all. Intimidation...corrections.
She did not recognize the dog offer a sit BEFORE the yank- or corrections or ugly TONE of voice....COMMAND- She could have PRAISED the DOG- GOOD BOY for the first sit he offered. Nope- NOT A POSITIVE TRAINER
Susan's method is great. She gets you to understand your dog from the dogs way of thinking. I've seen her help many owners with dogs they would've given up. Clickers and food don't always work. Use Susan's method and get the dog to work as your true partner. Susan helped me get a reliable dog - every time. Susan has been called by humane societies, rescues, and dog daycare centers. Her methods work.
I am sure she is a brilliant trainer. I just choose to train differently. And no, I do not guarantee my work as dogs are living creatures with minds of their own and no one can ever be 100 percent sure of what another living thing is thinking. I choose to train with clickers and treats and the Premack principle. I like to set dogs up for success and reward it. Everyone has the right to train the way they want. I just think positive training is more fun! Just my opinion.
@Riverbendagility ~ yes, REWARDS for doing it right is positive methods....PreMack is NEW SCHOOL- to compare to this OLD school. The dog is clearly conflicted- ears back, not willing to move...I don't train with clickers, but with life rewards, play and FUN! JOY- dogs like to work with me because they get it- if they do as I ask, they get to have fun with what they want...not just food or praise...with games and good things.
eastcoastpups, you are right on. It is ironic that so many trainers actually call Overfield in to their own homes to solve problems with their own dogs. Ask the trainers she helped. It is always a good idea to have facts before you diss.
This dog is responding in a behaviorally appropriate way to anyone who understands dogs. On the video is a dog who respects another. Fear looks completely different. Anyone who understands dogs knows that. Overfield is called in nationwide by trainers, industry leaders, rescues and dog day cares. She has been working WITH dogs for 38 years. You may want to give her a call and learn something.
@ANGUSSANDY Ears back and refusal to approach when asked is behaviorally appropriate for FEAR. The woman's personality is intimidating. She does not use "REWARDS-based" learning- which is why I would say she is not a positive trainer. People think Cesar Milan is "good", too- yet, he is not rewards-based, and he trains with intimidation. Yes, she trains as though she learned how 38 yrs ago with intimidation.
I live in PA and I have personally consulted with her about my rescue Lab who was abused before we got her. Thanks to Overfields methods we have a happier, healthier dog. I would and I have endorsed her and her methods. I would recommend her to anyone!
@eastcoastpups i did watch the video. did you see how much he hesitated? and how even when she called him he didnt come? ears down, avoiding looking at her. did you notice how he didnt come whens he called? if he respected her, instead of fearing her, he would have come right away. she wouldnt have had to call him repeatedly. but i appreciate your opinion. you made me look more carefully at the video. but i still stand by my opinion
I still have to disagree with your opinion. I too have re-watched the video, I do not see "ears down," ironically I see the Airedale raise his ears inquisitively (and without fear) repeatedly throughout the process. I do agree with you that he did hesitate, but what dog doesn't hesitate when introduced to a new person who is telling the dog to do something? I have seen other trainers put a choke on the dog or push the dogs hips, to force their point, neither which I would want for my older lab.
what the fuck did this woman do to this dog? you can obviously see that its fear, not respect, thats making this dog listen. even when she gave him a treat, and called him over, he wouldnt come or eat it. dogs already know whats right and wrong? thats bull. any dog owner knows that dogs dont automatically know whats right and wrong. this dosent seem like a bad dog at all. just hyper. i would never in a million years let this phony near my dogs.
Not only are you completely wrong in your opinion, but you are also wrong stating the videos facts. When you wrote You can obviously see that its fear the first thing I thought was you didnt watch the video. You described the dog as in fear as the dog wags its tail as it approaches Overfield. I dont know any scared animal that will willingly approach the fear with confidence and a wagging tail. It is apparent that you do not know how to read animals. Stop being a player hater.
@eastcoastpups - I agree that Overfield is OVERBEARING. I am professional dog trainer and PHD who is trained to observe and analyze body language. She may get results, she is not a positive trainer. She uses corrections FIRST- not rewards-based.
Also-the dog ate the treat. He did not as you stated "even when she gave him a treat, and called him over, he wouldnt come or eat it." At least watch the video before you trash it.
Riverbend-I was wondering how you came to this decision, because I did not see a shut down dog,nor did I see a dog that was afraid. I saw an inquisitive dog. Since all you brought to the table was unwarranted criticism, it makes me wonder if you are a jealous trainer? I have recommended her to many of my friends and coworkers (spanning over six states) and I have NEVER had my friends dislike her training methods or feel that they have a "shut down" dog. The state of PA absolutely loves her!
@eastcoastpups - Her personality: voice, demeanor, body language- is offensive to me....objectively- she is "condescending". Listen to what she says to owners and dogs....
An inquisitive dog doesn't refuse to come when invited....she is old school methods.
If owners want well behaved dogs, they should contact Overfield. Overfield gets fast, permanent dog obedience because she communicates with dogs the way dogs communicate. Read her book, "Saturday Dogs...and the owners they trained." Owners and trainers across the country have called her in. No dog is too old or too young. No breed is off limits. Overfield guarantees her work. Why don't choke chain and clicker trainers do the same? Overfield trains rescue and shelter staff.
